Why do young people like to wear black?

Do you notice that young people like to wear black, and old people like to wear bright colors? Do you think it is a reflection of their attitude towards life, the country and society as a whole? It seems that many young people do not view the future positively, while old people have seen too much, and they are treating every day as a gift from God. What do you think?

Who told you that when you wear black means that you don't see the future positively. Common, there are many successful people who wear black with bright future. I enjoy wearing black and I don't think it has to do with the future. It more on what attract me. I could also not go for those bright yellow or shouting pink to have that bright future.

Hi Mashnn, it depends on the culture. Over here, some young adults even wear all black to attend wedding dinner. Most of us do not go to such an extent when our friends are getting married. It seems a bit weird to see the parents in bright colors, followed by the young adults in black. Once in the newspaper, a professional trainer from other country remarks that the people in my country have not much color taste. The office wear are mostly black!

It true culture influence the way we choose what to wear. To me is not weird in anyway. It just that they like the black color. Wearing black doesn't mean you don't have a color taste. It only because it the most manageable color you can always have and where I come from, people really enjoy wearing black.

Lots of teenager/young people enjoy wearing black since they are just only following the new fashion trends to feel they are not left out from others. And for those Old people they love bright colors since that was the fashion trend when they were teenagers so they get used to wearing those bright colors. Person wearing black or any dark color doesn't mean that he/she view the future negatively it is the only way how they express their selves and feel comfortable when using it and also person who wears bright colors doesn't mean that they have a positive view towards future. No matter what we wear we must always help each other to improve our future for the next generation. =)

That true. It has to do with what we find more attractive. Those wearing black find it more attractive as well as for those who prefer bright colors. I have seen so many young people with bright colors.

Hi Ceasar, I guess it depends on how the young people dressed up. Those who dressed up in Goth fashion, with black lipstick and everything in black, are definitely sending a message to the world. I think young ladies dressing in black, with jewelries, are very nice and classy when they attend a function.

I also like wearing black it is so classy and elegant. I am not sure why young genre loves to wear black these days. They say it's for emo or emotional ones. But,I really like black dress with special occasions.

Hi Jaiho, yes, if you have a nice silver necklace, it will show up very well. Once in a company where I used to work, about three quarters of us dressed in black. That was a very big department, and we are talkinag about 70 office staff dressing in black. It does seem a bit gloomy to see nearly everyone in the same colors. The bosses are much older, and they have different color choice. However, when we put on jacket, the jackets will definitely be black color.

It is a beautiful color indeed, the only color even though you spill your drink on it, won't show up. It classy and surely elegant. I cannot imagine without my little black dress.

i guess you really meant "adolescents", and not necessarily the young people. this idea of wearing black is part of their "rebellion' towards authority. in the earlier days, black is a nuisance. and being adolescents, they tend to go againts this authority. thus, black became their color of choice, adding to media and trend influence.

Hi Murkie, actually I have noticed many young adults wearing all black to attend wedding function. I do not know whether that is acceptable in some countries, but it seems to gain acceptance here. Even my own cousin wore black when her brother got married. Some older relatives frowned at her, but most of us accepted it. Youngsters who used the goth fashion style literally sent a message to the society. I think that is part of growing up. If an older woman were to do that, that will be very funny.

if you are superstitious, you would really frown upon at wearing black during weddings. black is believed to bring bad luck to the newlyweds. however, there is somewhat a change in culture as younger couples tend to challenge this belief and use black as their motif.

I don't think it is right to blame wearing black to the things that's happening with our life or our society. A lot of people wear black normally because they feel their slimmer compared to wearing light colors. Some wear black because it is a color that goes along easy with a lot of other colors, mixing and matching won't be a problem with this. Young people wearing black use it for fashion and I don't think it won't reflect or make our life dark if we wear or loves the color black. If people think black then that is different.

Hi Enelym, haha, your last sentence is really true. Actually once a while when we wear black is all right. It is really depressing to see more than three quarters of the people in office wearing all black. Especially that is on a wet Monday morning, and the sky is still dark, and raining non-stop.

If most of the people are wearing black in the office, it can reall be noticeable. And when that happen we usually ask these people if there's any burial they're gonna attend

Hi Wengroel, actually every color is easy to wash, as long as the material does not require ironing. The only thing I hate about black is that it attracts heat. Over here, it is very hot and humid, and attracting heat is really not a good idea. I like black because it goes with many colors of shoes and bags. As long as it is not those shiny black, then nobody can see that the T-shirt is actually quite dirty.

I wore alot of black as a teenager. I do not think that it was in any way a reflection of my attitude. Now I only wear black pants because you can put any color with it...lol. But there are more and more kids that I see that are unhappy and so they wear black. So I think it all depends on who the person is and what they like or are like. My mother in law and mother love bright colors. I am just a different kind of person than them.

Hi Lisa, I think when we reach the age of our mother, we would prefer to wear bright colors too. Age really determines what we eat, and how we dress. I doubt we can see the old people wearing black every day. It must be very awful to see that happens! However, for the young people, it is a different story. Even if they adopt the fashion of wearing all black, and using black lipstick, it still is ok.

Hi Graceekwenx, unless that happens to be shiny black dress. I think that dresses that sparkle under the light is really the worst. since every single hair on the dress is noticeable. Actually I prefer those dark blue dresses than pure black dresses. However, black dress does go very well with silver jewelries or those expensive pearl necklace.

I like the color black. I don't always wear it, but when I do, it's not because I have a negative view on life. Some people just like the color black...Just like some people like the colors purple, pink, blue, etc. It doesn't reflect on how they they view the world, in my opinion.

I wish I can say I am young, but I also like black. Easy maintenance and most of all, hides some of the bulge. I am not too sure that many young people like to wear black, unless there is a part of town that I did not go where you see them in black. Or maybe they think it looks cool, like men in black. Have you collected statistics to make the statement? Maybe you might be surprised?

Hi Tiffnkeat, I think I am more observant than you! Maybe you can visit the casino one day, and see the color selection of the aunts, uncles, and the young adults. That is one of the places to see masses of people in their natural behavior. Most people do not have choices when it comes to work place, since many companies still give uniforms.

As a young girl, I love black color...I always like to choose black color for my dress....In my view, black's brightness shows our character...I feel very freshness in black color dress...It's very difficult to wear black in hot season....I think that Black gives me pretty and cute look...Black gives me satisfaction, courage and comfort...I love to see the people that I love in black dress... :-)

Hi Dassodils, yes, I think you have expressed the views of many young people very well. I think it will be very awful if your mother and grandmother start to wear everything black! It seems very natural for us to see young people in black, and older ones in brighter colors. I think when we grow to the age of our mother or grandmother, our color taste will change too.

I think its probably bec so many youngsters are over weight and have heard black makes you look small...no just kidding...but I have not noticed that about them but I truly have noticed the older adults wearing many more bright clothing..I would never say that older adults have seen too much to reflect their choice of clothing..but I think that as we age our choices expand and we are willing to try a lot more colors.

Hi Bjc, haha, that is a very funny sentence. Event though black does make a person looks slimmer, there is no way to hide the big belly or the extra fats. There are some people who look nice in black, but there also people who look ugly in black. I think we have to consider the skin tone, and the accessories. Even young people do not wear all black, since most of them have some captions or pictures on the T-shirts.

Yes, i noticed it, and when I was a teen I used to wear black too. I don't know that I felt depressed because I wore black, or I wore black because i felt depressed, but yes there is something related to the attitude. I also wore black because I wanted to look slimmer, now I prefer more brightful colors as they can cheer me up a little bit.

Hi Almond, perhaps some young people just want to send a statement to the society about independence or rebellion. In this case, black is the natural color. I think our attitude changes as we grow older. We no longer think we can change the world, and we no longer think about overturning the government or create an ideal society. Maybe the change in attitude affects our colors selection! Most of us choose brighter color for blouse, or shirt, but still use black for skirts, pants or jeans.

Hi Noscarf, I do not think temperature have an effect on what they wear. Over here, we are just one degree north of the equator. It is always hot and humid. It rains half the time, and the sun shines after the rain. Even in this kind of climate, the young people still love to wear black. You would think they choose a brighter color, but no, they love black. Fortunately many people in other age groups wear multiple colors. The children are always wearing bright colors and wear bright shoes with bright color school bags. They look cute!

In some study, dark colors especially the black gives less attention compared to the lighter ones. This might be one of the reason why there are people who likes to wear black clothes. They don't want to get much attention from others. I also like black and I am fun of wearing it simply because it makes me look slim... I guess... hehe.. :D

Hi JHE, I think young people dress in black to gain attention instead of the other way round. i have seem some young adults attending wedding dinner dressing all in black. They want to highlight their jewelries, since the gold and silver shines very brightly against the black dress or blouse. In some countries, youngsters dress in black, and use black lipstick, in Goth fashion style. Hard to ignore them when they walk on the street.

The reason for this is simple, black goes with anything. Teenagers have been wearing black ever since as long as I can remember. It has less than nothing to do with the state of the country. It has nothing to do with their outlook on life. Well most of them everywhere. I am sure that some of them have a negative outlook on life. Of course, I'm certain that some people who wear bright colors also have a negative outlook in life. So yeah, the fact of the matter is that black just really does look good with most of everything. Those who wear black are not making any kind of statement. They are just wearing black just for the fact that it is going to be something that they are going to be able to wear to look good with them. So yeah, sometimes people wear black just to wear black because black tends to go with all body types for instance.

Hi Megamatt, you are really observant. I do not observe the colors until quite recently, when I worked in an office where nearly everyone wore black. Frankly speaking, I hate to see most colleagues in black, especially on a Monday morning. It seemed quite depressing. The company had a very weird dress code that forbid many things. I think many people did not know what to wear anymore, and they started to wear black for all working days. That was the first time in my life that I had so many black blouses, dresses and skirts! Later on, I started to notice that many young people love black, while older ones love bright colors.

I had never thought of it that way and in my case I don't think that to be true too. I wear black and majority of my wardrobe clothes are black or dark colors, that's not coz I don't appreciate my life or don't have a positive feeling towards life, it's more like I like the color black and one of the reasons is that it makes me look slimmer than I actually am

Hi Thatgirl, I think black goes well with jewelries too. It is impossible for a silver necklace or accessories to shine when the colors are bright. Sometimes, it seems a bit gloomy when nearly everyone in the office wears black, especially on a rainy and gloomy Monday morning. That has happened to the workplace in my ex company. Some colleauges wear black throughout the month. I think that company has very weird dress code, until nobody really knows what to wear anymore. Black is the safest color.

Really? Well, I know I wear black because it makes me look a bit more slimmer and I'm into the emo and punk stuff so I tend to wear black. I guess it's the new trend though, some teens prefer black to look better but it may reflect attitudes as well, it depends on the wearer. I simply wear it because I like the look of it but it's not the best to wear on a hot day because you're basically sweating buckets in it. I know some teens wear it for a fashion such as the scene style in which teens dress up like little goths. But generally, it's popular due to it's slimming effect, I know my friends like black tights so that their legs look slimmer and more attractive. It could be a form of rebellion but I don't think so.
@scheng1 (24650)

Hi Triple0, probably those who choose the goths style have a stronger message to send to the society. In the business world, most jackets are in black color. But the business people usually have some other colors to match the black jacket. Sometimes they wear gold watch so that the gold will shine against a black background. I think wearing black dress is good when we have jewelries with it. Even then, wearing all black to attend a wedding dinner is really too ridiculous. Just too bad that many young people do not differentiate the occassion.

I don't know what you call young people or old people but here young people are surely not wearing more black colours as elderly people do. Elderly people are still the ones who wear less colorfull clothes (black, dark blue, grey, brown). Personally I like black, it always looks great and it fits with any colour. I am also not the kind of person that would wear all these colourfull clothes and I never did. Already as a kid I did not. I don't feel comfortable in it plus I don't feel the need to get attention by shouting colours (which give me headaches as well). It is also proved that a lot of colours (same with animé/cartoons on tv)can really drive people crazy, they get stressed, over active. I think we have enough shouting colours all around us, plus shouting tvs an overcrowed world full of cars and people. Perhaps just one colour is a good way to ease/calm your mind. What you say about god and colours... sorry but I really don't know what god has to do with it. Nature is mostly green - blue - brown and grey and it's harmony! Harmony eases the mind all the shouting colours people made are surely not.

Hi WakeupKitty, once I worked in an office where nearly everyone wore black to work. It is not just one or two days, but practically every working day. They are not wearing black with some other colors patterns, but they are dressing in all black. That was quite depressing for me! I really am not used to seeing black everywhere I turn, and that was quite a huge department, with more than 80 people in close proximity. I think wearing all black to wedding dinner is really weird. However, it seems that many young adults are doing that. Funny that the color selection in a tropical island should be black for nearly all occasions! I think people in your country have moderation when it comes to color.
