Asteroid coming close

Next week a large Asteroid ( well the size of an aircraft carrier ) will pass the Earth within 200,000 miles. Will this have any effect on life on our planet.

I'm not sure if it will have a direct effect, as 200,000 miles is very far. Perhaps if the asteroid carried some sort of radiation or magnetic field with it, it can affect the satellites an therefore affect internet, phones, anything that uses satellites for signals. But if calculated correctly, I think we'll be fine, hopefully it doesnt shatter into pieces as it flies by, that would be a scary thought. Crosses' fingers..Be safe!

Don't hold your breath, we could all get covered in soot.

Apparently it's made of carbon so if it did shatter we could all be covered in diamonds.

Ok, I'll give you a real answer. No, it won't have any effect on us. It won't be coming anywhere near us. It is passing by over 200,000 miles away. That's almost as far away as the moon, which is much more massive and has far more effect on us gravitationally. Your car has more gravitational effect on the earth than this asteroid does. It's just going to be an interesting astronomical event. There will probably be a lot of amateur astronomers taking photos of this thing, can't wait to see them.

The views so far are quite fuzzy but it does not look very spectacular. You never know closer views might show something previously unknown.

The size of an aircraft carrier may not be able to pose substantial threat to the earth yet, the re-entry into earth atmosphere after travelling far distance from Kuiper Belt is going to burn it down to a size that can kill several cows or crash a house only. Nothing to worry at all even if it suddenly decide to change its course and headed toward the earth due to gravity pull, the probability that it is going to crush down hard on us is next to zero with our sun at the peak of its cycle this year.

The prediction was that it was going to pass just inside the orbit of the moon at high speed. I wondered if the passing might have some weather or tidal effect. I feel that you are quite right that we have nothing to worry about.

It confirms that the end of the world is for the 11/11/11. Many asteroids and comets have an elliptical orbit crossing the orbit of the Earth. A major collision disaster is possible but they are rare, the last one happened 65.5 millions years ago at the end of the Mesozoic Era, and without it we would probably still be dominated by dinosaurs, so it has not been a disaster for everybody.

Not another prediction for the end of the world to follow the end of capitalism. Oh dear is there nothing left to live for.

I do like hearing about these kinds of events, though. No need of getting scared, though. Only thing that'll accomplish is you make everyone else's life around you miserable - or a good dose of laughther

Yes I like to exercise my face too as you have probably guessed. Just wondered if anyone had a thought on the possibilities of something happening.

I had no idea an asteroid was coming but i am sure it will cause some kind of effect on earth if so. This will be very interesting to see though. Cant imagine the after effects of this...maybe we should be taking cover!!?!!

Pretend I haven't told you. I feel sure if there are any effects they won't be horrendous, they better not be my Grandsons football team have just had their first big win.

A person will go crazy worrying about every cosmic event that may or may not impact life on our planet. I prefer not to even think about it, I keep a survival kit for me and my family in case of any natural disaster or other crisis and the truth is that is all we can do, outside of being prepared we are all at the mercy of the universe or God depending on what your spiritual beliefs may be.

I wouldn't worry about it. I would also ask the question is it worth being prepared for any misfortune apart from really minor ones.
