Power down

I've been without any electricity for the last four days. It's been miserable weather, and our tiny solar panels just haven't been able to produce enough power. After having the whole thing turned off for four days, my partner turned it on last night and there's a little trickle in the batteries at last :-) So the first thing I did this morning was get the modem switched on so I can see what's going on in the world. I'm not sure what's been worse, trying to cook in the dark with a torch held between my teeth, or having absolutely no way to contact the outside world. Our landline phone needs power to operate, and my mobile phone battery ran out on day one. As we're off grid, we should be prepared for no power situations, but since we installed these panels we've got rather lax. What's the longest you've been without power? What did you miss the most?

Fortunately you have solar panels .Even if it generates less electricity but it can meet an emergency. Power failure is quite a bother to everybody, much more you have so many stuffs that need processing.I wonder how often the power failure is there.Over here the power failure seldom happens,if ever,no more than several hours.

We are not attached to mains electricity at all, and are completely reliant on the solar panels. They do not supply our emergency needs, they supply everything! The bad weather recently is what has meant that they've been unable to cope with our demand, and unfortunately we drained the batteries. The good news is that we normally still have power when the local village has power cuts on the mains service.

It is a real bonus that you have power when the local village has power cut.Solar power is really good, but it all depends on sun.Why can't you apply for mains electricity?

THe longest Ive been without power is a week. We lost power when Hurricane Ike came through. I can't complain to awfully bad though because we had just bought a generator for this type of situation. We only hooked it up to the Freezer and Fridge though. The thing I missed the most was peace and quiet LOL. My children were driving me NUTS during this time.

About 5 days if I can remem, ber correctly. We got hit with Hurrican Irene about 7 years back? I can't remember the exact date! Anyway It was in the fall. Thankfully it wasn't too cold and we could drive top a sports bar to see football. The bad thing is all the food in the fridge spoiled. My mom was livid. but All of us were not hurt and that is what matters. I'm glad you have your power back! Take Care.

I feel bad for you right now. Thats got to be hard to deal with. The longest I remember being without power was like 2 days. It was years ago and in the summer time. The hottest part of the summer may I add. It was not pleasant at all. But we did not have computers back then so I was always outside anyway. But sleeping was hard in the heat. I hope you get your power back soon.

This is just an idea but you could use some of your excess electricity to pump water up to higher level and then when you run out of battery power then you can release the water to turn a turbine and generate more electricity. if you can link this so it allows water to flow into it also then you can get free electricity from water too. Either that or get a generator. ;)

Twenty years ago we had an ice storm and we were without power for four days. I missed the phone. Back then I didn't have a cell phone and so our landlines wouldn't work. I had bought groceries and had a gas stove so I could still cook....also had oil lamps and plenty of candles. I would cook a meal and that would warm up the kitchen which we blocked off. We also slept in there! LOL

Two weeks during an ice storm.Heat! That was the worst. I found a generator and we got it going before it hit sub-zero, but just barely.

Well we are on the grid and we have solar power. We feed the excess solar back tot the grid and get paid for it so it keeps our power bill down. We are not often without power but I really hate it when it crashes on us with no explanation. I think the longest has been a few hours. That usually happens when there is a sudden crash somewhere and we have to wait for the power to come back. It is harder at night with only candle light but we use gas for our cooking so we do not go hungry. I get more concerned with the computers. I keep thinking we should install an uninteruptible power supply so we have a chance to turn them off before they crash. My computer crashed so badly once that I had to take it in for repairs. It rebooted during a reboot. I could not get to it to turn it off fast enough. The fun of thunder storms. Now when there is thunder I turn it off just in case.

I was without power for 4 days a few years ago. Thank God the weather was mild and I wasn't too hot or too cold! The thing I missed the most was food variety--nearly everything I had in the cupboards needed to be put together and cooked so I ate a lot of cold canned beans. Since then I've added more foods to my emergency stores, a lot more variety. I got a little platform to cook on and some fuel to put under it. I really need to get a grill, too, or a propane camp stove. I also bought fans that have rechargeable batteries in them in case I lose power when it's hot and I've used them a couple of times. I don't envy you with no power and children to entertain and take care of and cook for. I've done it before and it's no picnic. But we learn from our mistakes and if I lose power again for more than a few hours I'll be more than ready.

hi greenmoo here at Gold crest a num ber of months back we went off power at 4 pm as we were having dinner and did not get back on main power til 9am the next morning. I missed not beng able to move ma and my walker to my room and my bed as the power was off and the elevator not working and I had just got out of the hospital so walking up the two flight of stairs in the dark without my walker and with a sore right knee was no option as I was too afraid of falling again,I was injured badly in the last fall.so at 2;30 in the morning they got the handyman to start the generator but it did not power the elevator enough to safely take all of us that belonged upstairs u p there.so at nine I got to my room laid down after resetting the modem and router to my computer. slept all mo rning.oh yeah four days ago the lights were off for two hours as it took forty five minutes for that elderly generator to gather power enough to get the lights and elevators back going on..,I never heard anything work so hard trying to restore electricity

I don't know your geographical position, so pardon me if I say something that doesn't fit for your situation. We live in a semi-tropical climate, with lots of sun, but despite having a 1.5 kw solar system we remain connected to the grid. Actually, we still draw from the grid, but our system has reduced our usage by more than half, and will get better as summer climbs. If you are in position to do so, and of a mind to do so, can you boost your solar with mains, or if necessary with generator power? The only time we are ever without power is during fierce storms if a line goes down, and that never lasts longer than a few hours. Lash

We've always been on the 'grid' and have always been dependent on electricity. The longest I was without was several years ago when after a windstorm knocked down some electrical posts, our section of the city didn't have power overnight. As it was the fall, and our heaters were electric, we suffered overnight without heat. Me and the kids slept together on the floor in the living room as we found that area as the warmest of the whole house.

woow green I am so sorry that your life has been interupted in such a way.. There are still 48,000 households..you can probably double that number per household.that still do not have power in a state on the east coast here in the USA...its really really terible and I thank God everyday that I am not nor have been in that situtation. Back 7/8/9 years ago when the blackout was on the entire east coast was in a blackout..it was hot summer so it was bearable to me..for sure not in the cold cold winter...buuurrrr!! hope you get power soon.
