Last year I became involved in a group that helps victims of the online romance scams recover. I found this to be a very rewarding way to live my life. One of the reasons I became involved was because I had tried online dating and found myself getting interested in someone that just did not seem to be quite the honest man he claimed to be. As I was doing some background research, I found out about these horrible romance scammers that are preying on people online. It doesn't even matter if you are using an online dating site or just some public social networking site. There are scammers everywhere and any of us can become the victims so easily. When I began volunteering in this way to help other victims heal and recover, it became a very important way for me to do something to help others and to be able to do it from home. I have learned so much about people this way, and made some wonderful friends over the past year. I've also learned a lot about how to protect myself online, and love being able to help others learn how to protect themselves as well. Helping others gives me a purpose in my life and that is something that helps me keep going from one day to the next. There is nothing more rewarding than to be able to reach out and help someone else who needs it. However there are so many of us who love to help others, that this is one of the ways the romance scammers and friendship scammers operate. So learning how to be helpful without getting caught up in scams and getting hurt ourselves is very important. There are always little things that try to warn us something is not quite right. Listening to those warnings is very important when trying to help others. Nowhere are we required to help others in such ways that we end up hurting ourselves in the process.
