I am curious...I am learning a lot about history and the world in school right now. I know many different cultures of people come here to mylot. I am curious to hear about fashion in other cultures. I know American culture seems to have the most outlandish outfits, that surely cover the least, while in some other countries women are forced to cover everything. I am curious about what you grew up wearing, what kind of clothes you wear now. Are there any rules for dressing in your culture, or things you grew up believing about how people should dress. Places you dress up to go to? Please do tell all.

I'm an American woman who wore dresses until her teens and they had to be long and cover up to my collar bones at the neckline. Then the 1960s happened and you couldn't buy anything but a miniskirt for a young person. My parents were totally against jeans. But I did get to wear dress slacks and nice blouses, esp. ones with embroidery. Church and school we dressed up for. Middle dress up for school and higher for church. At home, old clothes mostly. Now I still dress to cover as most people I know who have not dressed to cover and even some who have are getting skin cancer. The non-covered everywhere, the ones who covered up, mostly face cancer. Take care.

Wow! Those must be tight pants! We had tight pants for a style for a short time, now it's the other way around. Too baggy. One extreme or the other. After mini-skirts, we had midi which were ankle length. Then up to just above the knee. Such extremes.

your answer has a good message dear. uncovered areas are exposed to the sun and at risk of skin cancer. People just ape others without giving much thought to their comfort or body needs. In India, we really do not need tight jeans because it is hot but the young wear it anyway and tight clothes are being pointed out by doctors as a reason for infertility in young couples who live life like there is no tomorrow.

Well, I did grow up in the United States and I definitely know what you are talking about when you refer to the women that are trying to get by wearing as little as they can get by wearing. However, that is not something that I believe in at all. I believe in modesty and I'm most comfortable wearing jeans and a t-shirt during the summer and during the winter I am most commonly found wearing jeans and a sweater simply because it is comfortable.

sometimes I wonder about dress code in the states and am glad that you think different. comfort and body needs are important rather than fashion fads.

I am an Indian housewife. I wear sarees when I go outside. I used to wear chudidars and skirts when I was younger. Girls in India wear frocks, jeans-tops, midis, chudidars and special dresses for occasions. South Indian girls wear pattu pavadai which is a silk skirt with top for marriages. Boys wear shorts or jeans or cargos with t- shirts that have cartoons like Ben 10 or Disney characters sketched on them. Bigger men wear dhotis and shirt or pant and shirt.

That's a lot of variety. I don't even know what some of those clothes are.

I am Asian and now living here in the U.S and learning american culture. People here are different from the people I grow up with in my homeland. I can say, American's are very friendly and some just doesnt care. I mean, not like home where people will stare at what what you're wearing, what you are doing, and not minding their own business. Speaking of fashion, I found most American women wear running shoes all the time here and also depends on what season it is. Back home, we are used to wearing sandals or flipflops paired with blue jeans and a tank top all year round, might be because we are in a tropical country and its really hot.

There are no rules in the Philippines as a whole. However, there are rules in places like school, offices and churches. We have a variety of fashion ranging from European, American and of course Asian. People here blindly follow American fashion, specially during Fall and Winter. I say blindly because there's no such seasons in our country, but people keep on wearing trench coats and boots. Another striking fashion sense would be that of Muslim Filipinos. Long ago, they were completely veiled. But now, they caught up with modern fashion, and retained only the veil on their heads. I particularly follow Asian fashion, because they suit my body type. However, my line of work needs me to be in jeans, tees and closed flats.
