Concept of "finite state machine"

I know that the topic of my discussion on this may not be for everyone. That argument will probably require extensive knowledges of computer engineering. What I wanted to ask, to whom could give me an answer is: the explanation of "what is" a "Finite State Machine.", abbreviated FSM. I've only heard about it many years ago, but I never deepened my knowledges in this field. I write this review with the aim to find an answer to this question, with the aim to better understand the technology that is somehow the way we live of tomorrow. If anyone knows just give me an explanation about the FSM, I will have more clear ideas.
