What are your opinions on extreme couponing?

I have seen the show a few times. I have also heard about people talk about extreme couponing. I have used coupons from time to time. Nowhere near the people on the show use them though.
One lady said that she was a shelf clearer and that you should get to the store before her.
Another lady said that she called to get her stock pile insured.
A young boy had to put items back on the shelves because of a coupon policy that he didn't know about.
Any thoughts, opinions, stories to share?

I will say one thing. I'd love to be able to buy a lot of stuff like those people seem to be able to do and not have to pay much for them. Who wouldn't want to save money? lol. But I'd have to also wonder though about the extremes some people go to do all that. Sure, you'd save a lot of money but would it really be worth it? Like with all the effort and whatnot involved.
Like someone said, even then, I don't know how I could. A lot of places have coupon limits in place now to prevent you from "going overboard". I've seen some places say they've done so for that very reason (shows like Extreme Couponing).

Yes I have wondered myself if it is worth it or not. I heard some of the women on the show say they spend 20 + hours and I am thinking to myself that is like having a job. People that have jobs or go to school might not have the time to do this. It is great if people can, and want to put the time and effort into it.
My sister is doing it a little but she just sees what is on sale. Then looks for a coupon for the sale items. That is basically all she has done so far. She is going to school and work, so I don't think she would have the time like the people on the show.
Overall I think it is great when people can use them. They save money, and even small amounts help sometimes. A dollar off here and there can add up.

I have seen the show and I don't think that a lot of it is as possible as they show it to be. I have seen them shopping at Kroger and using thousands of coupons and I know that the Kroger store that I worked in had a policy that you could only use two coupons per each thing ( not per item but lets say 2 Crest toothpaste coupons no matter how many you bought) and they would only allow you 10 coupons total. They will not give money back, but a gift card for anything over $5. Plus, they won't take printed internet coupons for free items or for large amounts off.

Yes I have thought the same thing myself. I have seen on the show that some people do separate transactions because of coupon policies, or how many coupons they can use. I saw on the show one man had to put a bunch of items back on the shelf because he did not know about the coupon policy the store had.
I think some of it is realistic, although I agree with you some of it doesn't seem realistic. I could see some people getting a lot of stuff for free, or really cheap if they know what they are doing. I have seen coupons for free items, and up to $2.00 off.
I do know that it is good to go on double coupon day because I think you can get up to $4.00 off one item, maybe it is only $2.00 not sure.
Anyway the show really is extreme and I am not sure if it is really real. I think they may exaggerate a little. or maybe exaggerate a lot.

I've been this show a few times before and I think it is pretty insane to say the least. They are able to buy a rediculous amount of groceries they might not ever use but only spend pennies on thier whole purchase. In all I think it is pretty cool that you can do that if you put the efforts in but its still pretty insane.

I am not sure if we have exactly the same way as you describe.
I do think it can be of a great help but it will also need a lot of extra time.
Shops inform us about what is cheaper when, sometimes I go over at that day to buy it, it's never for free.
Sometimes I decide I don't really need it.
I try to buy what is cheaper or the cheapest at the moment, that is what we eat.
So I don't follow only the list I make with things I need. That saves me a lot of money just like cooking myself instead of fast food and not throwing away left overs. If I cook more I put it in the fridge for later (bad times if I am not able to cook for longer).

I understand. Yes leftovers do save money (and time). I sometimes will eat a leftover for lunch the next day, if I cook the night before. My sister has started to coupon a little, but not extreme as shown on the show. We only use coupons for things we need. Some people go overboard, one lady bought like 200 tic tacs. I do not think she needed that many. That is going overboard to me. Plus you do not NEED tic tacs. It is not an essential such as toothpaste, soap, or food.

Extreme couponing is excessive and to some extent, unneccesary! The use of coupons is valuable and helpful to any frequent shopper but too many coupons are tacky! Taking advantage of multiple deals is acceptable but taking advantage of every single deal and holding up the line is uncool! If I ever got behind an extreme couponer in line, and the register was the only one open, I would more than likely kill myself lol.

I have thought about how many people these extreme couponers make mad. My cousin had a coupon for hair color, and when she went to go buy it it was all gone.
There was one episode of the show that the cashier was getting off of her shift, and another cashier had to finish her transactions.
It would probably make me mad if I got behind one of these people, and if they cleared the shelves. I myself would be mad....
I probably didn't even have a coupon to save on it and then wouldn't be able to buy the product because of an extreme coupon er.

I would love to go and be taught and I mean hardcore taught how to do this. I wouldn't want to be one of the shelf clearer by any means because I would feel guilty. BUT having a stockpile of groceries and stuff would be great. I mean you never know exactly what the future holds. We just went from 2 incomes to one and a stockpile would be great right now but we don't have one. Speaking of which...I really need to get a printer so I can print at least SOME coupons out LOL

I know what you mean, I need ink. I have a printer but i am out of ink. I need ink for school anyway so I can print my notes out. It would help us with printing coupons also. Ink can be expensive though so I have to wait until I get some money or find it on sale or something. I am going to shop around and see where I can get a good deal on the ink. Or maybe I could use a giftcard to buy ink with. I need to get it somehow. Maybe I should find a coupon for ink, and you should find a coupon for a printer!

It might save people money, but it doesn't always save them time because of the amount of coupons that a person has to cut.
I use a lot of coupons as well, but I don't take it to the extremes that some of these people do. I don't have time to do all of that. I will see people buy so much with the coupons they have, but at the same time, they are spending hours trying to get all of those coupons out. Hours that they could be spending on something else.

I would love to be able to save that much money like you I have saw people do it for many different reasons like moving to hawaii I always look forward to watching it every week I remember the one show where the lady took what she bought and donated the stuff to the mcdonald house I think thats a nice thing to do I have started getting the sunday paper to start using the coupons I had some I did not use and I gave them to a friend and she said that the coupon came in handy.

I think some extreme couponers are nuts! They spend more time looking for coupons and deals then with their families! I have seen the show and I could not believe how much stuff these people kept when you know they might not be able to use all especially when they are getting it all the time! I wish more extreme couponers would donate more items! Some buy stuff they don't use or need! I remember one woman did it and only bought stuff she uses. She had started couponing when she became a mom.. Extreme couponing is good but I think in some ways it can be a form of hoarding! It is insane! If they only kept what they needed and donated the rest,I wouldn't be calling these people crazy!

I do like to use some coupons to save some money myself. But there are a lot of times where some people are rather excessive about it to say the very least. It is equal parts admirable and also scary. Actually more scary to say the least, as this does seem like an ability that does take a lot of time to get ingrained right into the fabric of the minds of a lot of people. It actually kind of makes me shudder to say the very least.
Yet whatever does work for them. That is really all that I got to say about something like that. There are just going to be a lot of times where people are going to go several miles extra with their coupon use. If couponing was an olympic sport, they would be in line for the gold every single time. I have to tip my hat to them a little bit but also quiver at the fact that someone could really be that obsessed. Obsession can be a powerful thing.

I seen the extreme couponing show and it amazed me how much these people where able to get for very little or for free. I decided i was going to take a swing at it myself but all the grocery store in my area have seemed to have policies in place to prevent do this to the extreme. Only 1 still offers double coupon days, but only match a coupon to .50, and you can only have one coupon from an given product per transaction. It was really neat, but it seems that i found out about it a little too late.
