I think Pele is beginning to become a senile old person, who doesn't want to loose his status quo, which he has currently, as he is officially considered the best player from the history. But Pele doesn't know that the fans will decide these things, not him. And constantly attacking Messi, despite he being modest and not attacking back, is a sign of a dirty character.

I think because he feels that Messi will be considered the best player from the history and he doesn't want this to happen. He is afraid of losing his acknowledgment among the people.

Well, maybe what Pele meant is their overall achievement. As we know, Zidane has brought France and Juve to win everything they could. I think they hard to comparable since their position is also different.

I think there is a lot of merit to what Pele says. Pele comes from an era where international football is held at the highest helm compared to club football. If you see Messi's performance in international football, then you will have to say it is really poor. Compare that with the likes of Maradona, who won one world cup for Argentina on his own and inspired them to another final. Compare with Zidane who also inspired France to a world cup win and the finals for another world cup. So in that sense, that is a big blot on Messi's career and till he corrects that a lot of people will keep raising questions on his greatness. Cheers! Ram

now i had a friend rap...thanks for adding comments about it.. yes, i forget too, how 2 goals from Lilian thuram helps France wins against Croatia 2-1 after Davor Suker create first goal for Croatia and even make all stadium fans helpless because France did not play as good as when in quarterfinal...Croatia is really can make Zizou did not show his magic

@ram: You know that what you said is not completely true. There is needed more than a player to win a trophy, so I refuse to accept that Argentina won the World Cup just because of Maradona or France just because of Zidane. If I remember correctly, without Laurent Blanc's golden goal against Paraguay or without Barthez's performances, France wouldn't have even played the final, where Zizou has scored two goals. A whole team is needed, a good training staff and a lot of luck in order to win a major competition. If the Argentine national team would be a real team, it would be a great one, because there is quality in it, just it is full of egoism. And this is not only Messi's fault. Just a question: what would have done Pele in a national team like San Marino? It would be the same quality player, but with weaker team mates, he would have never won anything.

I can't judge this. As both Zidane and Messi are famous soccer players. And they are one of the best soccer players in the world. And they are not at the same age and therefore we can't judge them since they belong to different era. However, I know that whenever Pele predicts a world cup winner, usually this team will be out so soon:) I love China

I totally agree with Pele. Zidane gave a World Cup title for France while Messi do nothing as a average player on Argentina team. And at the end of the day, what matters is what you do for your national team. Barcelona fans will remember him forever, but the rest of the world? Don't know.. I think Pele don't like Messi like all Brazilians players don't like Argetina's players. And Messi said stupid things a while ago, like he never see Pele play, so, for this reason, Maradona is a better player than Pele. Pele replied saying that he already sent his DVD to Messi! lol

I can see that for you Messi is better than Zidane, but Pele only showed his opinion. For him, Zidane is better, like for many persons. There are nothing of unwise in put his opinions to the midia.

For now, i agree with pele. Since messi doesn't give a cup for his country. He often played bad when play for his country too. But, if sometimes messi give a cup or more for his country, i belive pele will give more respect for messi. Well, we just wait what messi can do.

@sopigs: It is true, but there the best player doesn't have to come from the best national team. If a player like Pele would have played in San Marino's national team, he would have never ever played at a major competition, so no trophies for that. In order to win a major trophy you need much more than one single good player and a right trainer also, which Messi doesn't have at the national team. The Argentine national team is full of "stars" who are not forming real team, they play only for themselves, not for each other. If the team spirit would be right, maybe Argentina would be a much better team.

sometimes i dont understand why many people only blame Messi if Argentina can win world cup...why only blame Messi?? it`s not fair.. why many people forget messi performance and contribution for Barcelona?? why when Barcelona get a winner, many people said that Messi is only ordinary player, not more..it`s not fair again i think

Maybe it is the fact that Messi is an Argentine that is why Pele seems to pick on him. But unless Messi leads his country to international glories, he will never be in the bracket of Zidane, Xavi and the likes.

but we sometimes forgot that messi is not superstar if his friend did not support him.. it`s simple example, he really get a good support when he is in barcelona..but in argentina??you can answer by your self

Its not about winning the world cup for argentina but to play well for them......messi has consistently played bad football for argentina but continues to do well for barcelona......obviously xavi and iniesta makes the difference......but messi cannot be considered great if he cannot prove his worth to his country.....i still maintain that messi is a very good player.

IT's not easy to make the best player praising another player being better than him. It's the problem of his pride, given his old age and legacy he left behind. He hasn't got much time left in this world and if he doesn't speak up now, by the time he's gone, Messi would have legally overtaken him as the best player. By then, all eyes would be on Messi and nobody would remember about Pele anymore. Thus in the meantime, he has to praise someone else, to make him his 'spokesperson' even after he's gone in the future.
