Will you celebrate 'National Unfriend Day'?

Nov 17 - National Unfriend Day - Trimming list of friends on FB

I was watching Jimmy Kimmel Live last night and he was trying to promote November 17 as National Unfriend Day. It's when we should all go through our facebook account and sort all our 'friends'. An example he gave was, anyone who can't drive us to the airport should be taken off. Anywon who wouldn't let you borrow money should be taken off, etc. There could be a lot of different reasons, or criteria we could set, on why we should 'unfriend' some people in FB, but I think this celebration is worth noting. And worth celebrating! So, will you celebrate Nov 17? Or do you do this regularly already? I don't think there is a need for growing friends lists on FB, as I don't really see the benefits for it.

An other day to celebrate. This time I think it's a good celebration. It's cleaning up day. A time to think over who your real friends are. I do that a few times a year and yes I do delete the so called friends. Not only the online ones but also the ones who are in my real life. And I can tell you it's such a relief!

I think that like real friendship, it has to be tested through time. The longer you know someone, or the longer you've helped each other out, the bigger your friendship becomes. And like this celebration suggests, at least once a year you have to evaluate your so called 'friends list'. To keep the ones that grow, and delete the ones that don't. Thanks.

bounce58 I don't belong to FB so I am not sure about all this..but I do have a list on myLot and I can't imagine why I would want to delete any of them. I say the more friends the merrier ..unless someone is being really rude, crude, obnoxious, I welcome everyone..

I don't disagree with you with your friends list here in myLot. At least we know that friends here help contribute in discussions, which helps in our abilities to earn online. And I agree that the more friends we have here, the better! Thanks.

Interesting thoughts, and in reality that could be like choosing to unfriend someone in here just because they are too busy to respond back in your discussions, or just because you might not always agree. Personally just like in here I tend to give people a chance who are wanting to be my friend. I have actually made some good friends of people I did not know both there and here, so for me I accept many types of people and hoping for the Best from there.

Just like the response I have above, I really treat FB and myLot friends differently. I think that people here in myLot are more open and honest because we all hide behind our user names. Even if we don't agree on a few things, at least we could accept them for their honesty. Thanks KH!

Oh no! Don't say bye! Unlike facebook friends, myLot friends are a different animal. While we encounter annoying people and annoying habits when we increase FB friends, we actually improve our activity and participation here when we increase myLot friends. And to be honest, I've learned so much more from people here even though we all hide in anonymity, than all named friends I have on FB. So, I'm not unfriending you Ms. Sarahruthbeth22! Even if you want to. -peace!

Why the 17th, why not Friday or Saturday when people generally have the time for such things? Just odd. Well, my friends list could use a lot of cleaning up actually. I do not regularly clean it, but I will occasionally see a status from someone and say "You know, I really never talk to them, so why bother keeping them around" But I do believe it is high time for me to go through and purge all of those that I do not speak to! So perhaps I will celebrate.

What a great idea! I think I will. It's funny because since you started this discussion I've really been itching to delete people from my list.. and today I will!

I also have no idea why Jimmy Kimmel chose the 17th (which is today). I agree with you that the weekend would be more appropriate days to do cleanups, as we can get busy with other things during the week. It's great that you're celebrating. You can even hum/sing a song while doing so. If you're familiar with the sont 'Why can't we be friends?' by War, then you can hum/sing it, but change the words to 'Why can't we UnFriend?'. They did this at JKL the other night, and it was quite funny. Thanks.

This is really funny but I don't think I have to celebrate such thing. Maybe he was just making fun about it!

Yes he was just making fun of it. Last night, he even showed a few cordoned off areas along hollywood blvd (I think), where he put some booths that looked like polling stations. People could come in there, logged on to their facebook account, and unfriend somebody. And there was a reporter outside who would interview the people coming out of the booth, and they would say who they've 'unfriend-ed' and why.

Even though I do not have a stack of facebook friends to sort through, there are plenty of other sites that also generate a lot of friends - even MyLot. There is a benefit in being able to 'clean house' and remove some of those friends, especially those we barely know. This happens regularly on a small scale, but if we had a designated day, for a group cleaning, it would seem a whole lot less personal. If we remove a friend here and there, we must remember how easy it is to offend or hurt others. I have seen people get hurt by an unexpected dropping. How many people do you think would take Kimmel seriously about this?

I think that if some people just logged on to facebook and keep updating their status with silly nonesense, or things that need not be public, then they just deserved to be 'unfriend-ed'. Even if they get hurt when they're dropped off. It's a funny gag on JKL though. Thanks.

Thats funny that they are trying to turn this into a little holiday. I personally will not be going through and purging people from my facebook friends list. I just decide when they send me friend requests if I want them on my friends list or not. If they drive me nuts or make me mad then they are removed and usually blocked. Rarely do I allow them back on my friends list after the first problem arises.

I think you're doing it smart. That you evaluate it when they send you the friend request. In essence you're already celebrating 'unfriend day' all the time, and need not one day to do it all at once. Thanks.

Hey bro! I'm not a FB member, but I don't need a special day to "Unfriend" someone! If someone pisses me off, like one of my now ex-gf's they are "unfriended"! This particular ex-gf has lied to me, stolen, and you wouldn't even believe what else and she finally pushed me too far and then tried to turn things around to make me the "bad one". Wrong person to "mess with". She'd done things like this before, we didn't talk for awhile, I forgave her and here we are again. I hate having to "unfriend" someone, but sometimes it just has to be done! I won't ever unfriend you my dearest bro cause I loves you!

Awww shucks! Thanks shister! I think she did make the wrong friend to piss off. I think whatever she did goes beyond facebook friendships, seeing(reading) how pissed off at her, you are. But I do feel a little nervous about her (now that I think about it). I hope she doesn't do anything crazy or hurtful to you. Just watch your back sis!

It is a bit annoying that everything has its 'day'. But I think that this November 17th is one necessary thing to celebrate. It doesn't have to be on that day, but we definitely have to de-clutter ourselves with more annoying 'people'. Specaially of facebook. Thanks.

Maybe you should just celebrate the National UnFriend Day, and then when you've rid of these annoying people, then you don't have to celebrate: 'girl friends day, boy friends day, husband's day, wife day, mother day, father day, friendship day, valentine day', like you say! Thanks anyway!

Hello iuliu23456. I think you missed the point, it was for the so called 'friends' that keep annoying everybody else on facebook. And it was all done in the spirit of fun. Thanks anyway.
