There are two ways to look at it. One way is the way you are seeing it. The other way is that your boss is so confident of your abilities that he has made you the OIC. So it really defends on how you see it. I think it all depends on how you want to grow. At some point in time if you want to move into your bosses' shoes then you will enjoy this. If not, then probably it is time for you to see if there is a lateral growth option available in your organization that is in line with your choices. Cheers! Ram

Well, I think little bit different ..I think if you selected as Officer in charge among many other employees then your boss must be trust with you. Meaning this will be good opportunity for you to show your ability to upper management that you deserve to be in his position. The succession plan of your boss will be much clearer, so if he would move on top of the ladder than you will be in charge there and your career will be improved as well. Talking about reporting, many job we won't like it because we hate or hard to do it, with little bit practice and familiarization, it will be piece of cake or you can delegate to someone else you trust in your team.

I would think it would be an honor to be chosen for this position. I guess your boss thinks highly of you and feels that you can do the job. Its also a resume moment, you can ask for a raise after this (if things go well) because you can be trusted to lead your fellow employees. It also helps if you are trying to get another job, you can tell your future employer(s) that you have leadership experience.

You should be thankful to him. He knows you can do the job that is why he assigned you to take charge while he is away. That would also give you the opportunity to show your best and to explore your leadership skill. Sometimes this really happens in our life. And it is a blessing indeed. Keep it up.
