Do the short days get you depressed?

Do you you find this to be a depressing time of year? I think that it may be the short days and less sunlight, but I don't seem to have my usual energy, and I know I'm not alone. Several of my friends have made similar comments and I've also discovered that this is a busy time of year for doctors. It seems that weather and the changing seasons affect us more than most of us are willing to admit. Do you also think that age plays a part?

I think I am weird because this time of the year my mood lifts right up! The changing seasons do affect me badly and it has been noted by the men in white coats, my moods plummet in the hotter months and lift up in the colder months. I am sensitive to the heat and do not feel the cold. I have more energy in the Winter than the Summer. In fact I will go as far to say I hate the Summer months. I get more irritable, moody and more depressed. I put it down to SAD, because it's a seasonal affective disorder which can in theory mean any season not just the Winter. I love this time of year. From the end of September right through to February. June, July and August are the months I truly dread.

It's not actually depressing for me, but I do agree that my energy level sort of waned a little. I guess it's due to the lack of sun. It's a bit similar to how I feel during rainy days. And I live in country with a tropical climate and is used to having warm weather and lots of sunlight. As such, shorter days do really affect how I feel. And yes, I believe that age plays a factor also. Not that significant but still it's a factor :)

Hi beamer, Thank you for responding and I'm sure that the part of the world where we live is a big factor. Blessings.

I really don't mind the shorter days. Since I get up very early for work....now I can sleep at night as it gets dark earlier. In the summer I find it hard to fall asleep with the sunlight still coming in the windows. So I don't get depressed. I also love staying home and working in my craft room in the winter....or scrapbooking so it doesn't bother me at all..but I know it does alot of my friends.

I have to say that it does sometimes get to me, and does make me feel a little sad. It doesn't always, but at some point or another it still kind of does make me feel sad. It's just the way that it goes.

I don't know if I think it is depressing but it is definitely stressful. With the holidays I feel like everything is being rushed. I also get very tired earlier since the days are shorter and it gets darker earlier. I do think that I get a little depressed more into the winter months like January and February. I can't stand the cold weather and seeing bare trees and no flowers outside.

Hi Pose: Actually, I must admit that short days can make me feel depressed because you don't feel very 'energized' to do the things you want. Short days are better to sleep for example. And because you don't feel so active you do the things slower. ALVARO

Yes, I do find the short days and early dusk very depressing. On weekdays, I just love it if I can leave office while there is still daylight. It seems like the day still has some hours left which I can utilize properly. However, during winter months, its already dark here by 4pm so by the time I leave office, its night outside and I feel as if the entire day has just gone by while there is so much to be done. On weekends, I am in the habit if taking a few hours of siesta…by the time I wake up, its dark outside and again I feel like an entire day has gone wasted. Add to it the chill in the air and it looks so desolate and despairing all around

Hi sudiptacallingu, Thank you for your response and it seems that a great many people are affected by the shorter days at this time of year. Glad I'm not alone but I think it's one of the reasons that I don't enjoy the Fall as much as I should. I can see that the days are getting shorter. Blessings.

I have some issues with seasonal affective disorder, but I try to stave it off as best I can, by going out every day. There is a nice coffee shop just up the street from here, with a nice big window I can sit by, and get some sunlight. It's not a lot, but it's more than I'd get where I live, since my apartment is in the basement. LOL

Yes, This is the reason why I'm moving back to Florida because I need sunshine in my life. I'm not a winter person and I need to see the sun.

I think many thing contribute to this condition. I know you can buy special lights and that this helps many people. For some reason this year seems worse to me then others, or maybe my memory is just fading. I'm going to shop for one of those lights.

I think that the winter can be an incredibly depressing time of the year, and I know that I personally have a fair number of problems chemically in the winter because I know that my serotonin levels drop dramatically during the winter months. To try to make this effect a little bit better, you should try to make the room as warm and as light as you possibly can in order to mimic the levels of light that you might expect during the summer months. I do this, and I do actually find that it is very helpful indeed for me to do this.

I go through this every winter. I call it the hibernate state. Animals go through it and we are animals too. So, I just think it is the time we slow down and take things at a steady pace. We get ready for winter just like all the other creatures and we horde things in our houses. We just call them holidays. lol Really though, I think it is the weather and us just getting ready for the winter season. *Peace and Love get's you through everything in Life* So, does a little humor!
