Having a hard time teaching my 2-yr old kiddo to write....

Hello mylotters! My son knows abc's and can count from 1-10. Though he can't pronounce some letters well but he can identify any letter you show to him. My problem is I'm having a hard time teaching him to write. Which one should I teach first, is it writing or reading? or both simultaneously? Everytime I give him a pencil together with the paper, he gave it back to me and just wants me to draw "vroom-vroom" cars or truck. I want him to learn not only cars but everything like nature, animals, universe...etc. Any idea guys on what I'm gonna do to teach him in reading and writing.

Do not force your kid to do what you want for him to do,do not even dictate what he needs to learn. Just guide him where his interests are, let him drive and you do the lesson of his driving.Observe his talent and skills and focus on that, give him the tools and let him wander and discover. Let him hold the pencil firmly first and then show him one stroke at a time until his fingers get steady. Do not get in a hurry, let him learn while playing. You can not insist something that he might resist, let your approach be like entering a playground, play with him as you teach him. Hold his hand and draw the vroom-vroom, let him be familiarized with vehicles if that is what he wants and who knows he may become an expert auto mechanic of his own shop.

Do not worry,he will learn. I know how you feel being a first time mom, you are just too excited because for every achievement your kid does,it is you being lifted up with so much joy.

Absolutely. He was a bit shy for now. Do you know how to let him develop confidence? like when someone ask his name I want him to answer with full of confidence.

Nice comment Macaya! I learned a lot. As a first time mom I find so hard teaching my kiddo to be good in everything.

In my experience as a Preschool Teacher for a few years 2 year old's are not ready to start really writing yet. They learn that as they get more patient and more willing to sit and be still. Right now at that age teaching them their ABC's and Shapes, Colors and Letter Sounds is great but writing will come with time. You should be letting him be a young child as he is. It's great to want him to get ahead but pushing too much will make him want nothing to do with learning at all and I don't think that is what your looking for. Good luck with everything and I hope you let your little one have more fun! =) There is PLENTY of time for schooling and learning. The just playing stage goes WAY too fast in a child's life!

Trust me being smart is something that will come naturally. You pushing it is just going to do the opposite! He will want NOTHING to do with learning or school at all if you push too hard... It is up to you since it is your child but teaching and working in childcare for over 12 years and being a preschool teacher, I am talking from experience. =) Plus I have 3 of my own children who are 6, 4 & 2.

Hello Jenith and welcome to myLot. It is surprising that your two year old has learned recognize the letter and numbers. He probably isn't ready to learn to write because his little finger are not nimble enough to hold a pencil right. I would get a coloring book and big colors that will fit his little hands and color with him beside you until he is ready to color with you.

Yes just having him sit with while you color and identifying the colors is good. Just don't expect him to stay in the lines.

You are right he loves colors but he's still having a hard time. Good thing he's starting to identify the different colors. When I said: "Show me the green color" then he tried his best to find green color.

He also helps me to color on a certain object but he put the color on the whole page but it's okay as long as he's enjoying.

Your child is doing great for being able to identify letters at the very early stage. Regarding writing, I think it's too early yet to teach him to write. Wait a little more time but if he can handle a pencil, I think its just okay to let him write lines and whatever he can do without it. Just make sure he wouldn't get hurt because it is a pointed object and actually dangerous for him at that age. Don't rush on making him right because his muscles are not yet coordinated. He may need a little more time to develop. I guess making him identify colors is better for a start. Then make him listen to nursery rhymes. It is a very stimulating activity for a child of that age.

Thanks AJ. He can handle pencil well. I just don't know what's wrong with him 'coz when his cousin visit our house at his age and took his pencil and notebook and write on them, he got mad. He wants me to give him another pencil and notebook for him to write too.

Hello Jenith, I think you should work on both the things together. Along with letter identification you can also show him pictures of various things around us and show him objects with their names. Though he will not be able to speak them at this age, but he will develop a strong sense of understanding. As far as writing practice is concerned as you said he wants you to draw "vroom-vroom" cars or truck, you can try to teach him draw the alphabets with this effect. Like for D you can say "A car is going on a straight path and then it takes a U-turn and comes back to its original position... this makes D". Likewise you can try for different letters. He may find this interesting. Happy teaching!

Hello there Jenith,at two your baby is sure smart. I agree with you that it is really hard to teach kids at that age. I remember when my daughter start schooling,it was really hard teaching her how to write,at three they were not ask to read, they were thought how to write first.and we all have a hard time teaching her how to write,What my father did was,he wrote an alphabet using "dots method"..My father wrote alphabet via "Dot Method" and my daughter will trace it.After seeing that she wants tracing the dots,we buy lots of books with the dot method. She learn how to write in 3 weeks and we spent more or less 60 working books. :-) Maybe you can try that to your baby.

I think that reading and writing is a lot to be teaching a two-year. It really sounds like he's doing fine for his age. He'll learn when he's ready. You should let him learn at his own rate. At some point, he'll learn I'm sure. I wouldn't push him too much, too quickly.

He's doing really good. It's just that he got bored when I keep teaching stuff even if he already know it. He doesn't want me to repeat things over and over again specially if he don't like it.

Two years is alittle young to teach them to read and write. Maybe you can make flash cards with big letters, numbers, colors and shapes. They can learn like one at a time. Once they learn one you can add another.

I guess thats why they dont start children in school that young age. As i said he is a bit young. Not all can be taught at that age. Few can. Just have patience and keep trying. I wish i coud refer you to my daughter. She is a school teacher. She has three children. She taught her oldest one at that age. He knew how to read and write before he was in preschool. It was easy for him. Her second son didnt take it till later and her daughter wasnt that fast either but was faster than the second son. So all learn at different degrees. My son didnt really even talk to much till he was 2yrs.

It amaze me seeing those kids out there who knows how to read and write at the age of 2 but they said that baby girls matured faster than baby boys. Girls can talk earlier than boys. Lot of patience is necessary at this young age 'coz they easily got bored and always crave for something new.

He is only 2 and he is doing well...very well I might say but he won't be able to write not just yet he is too young for that! give him time and do not force him...in the mean time read to him and show him the words as you read so that way he will learn to be familiar with letters and words.

It was funny when I taught him how to read coz he took a deep breathe after a few minutes. I can imagine his dad doing the same thing if he's having a hard time solving his problem and found no solution. For now we just keep playing together.

It sounds to me like your little guy is very advanced for a child that is two years old. Both of my children are advanced, but I could not start to teach them to write when they were two-years-old either. Instead, I think that what is very important at two years old is that children have the opportunity to work on their small muscle coordination, such as learning to hold a pencil or crayons properly. This is something that is necessary in order to learn to write. Continue to let him draw as he wants and reading to him and he will start writing on his own once his muscle coordination develops a little bit more.

My son went to school at that age as well. In school they weren't taught how to write letters but they were taught how to draw lines. That's the very basic of a writing class. YOu won't get your son's attention by making him write letters. So in my son's case, they were made to write lines and shapes and then they got to color them. Try it with your son.

I think a two-year-old is a bit too young to be taught to write. My son has just turned 3 and he is being taught to identify alphabets and numbers from 1-10. Your son's fine motor skills are still developing so he will still need a lot of practice in gripping a pencil properly. Yes, this is stage where he will only want to draw and color, give him crayons and paper and let him draw whatever he wants to. There is still time enough for him to learn to write. Read to him daily, give him lots and lots of picture books and show him to identify things, birds, animals etc.. All the best!

Thanks Kalya. I always encourage him to talk coz at his age he can't still speak well and I saw kids like him who can speak well. I know each kid is unique but I can't help myself. I'm so excited for him.

see to be honest with you, from what i remember, i learnt both at one. i was shown the word and was taught how to read it.. and then told to "copy" the word.. so therefore was shown how to write.

you have a good time with yur kids. many parents dont have enough time for do that, you are good mom i think you should train your kid both and simultaneously like you said. it will be better and your kid will learn fast. maybe you can combine with giving an image. you can show the image to him and tell about its name, and start to train your kid write it. and at least try to reread agin. maybe you can try it. cheers. have a good day.

2 year old kids love drawings, my son did. Whenever my son gets his hand on a pen or pencil, he would draw cars and balls. I draw with him and that gives him the time of his life. I imitated his drawings and he imitated mine. I started writing letters and he started to imitate me too. Parents are the role models of children, so I suggest that you show him how to write. Write with him, and mean it when you show him how you enjoy writing and he will do the same.

So bad he did not imitate mine, he just want me to draw cars all the time. When I draw something different like trees, birds, ocean..etc he wants me to turn back to cars again.

The age of two is VERY young to expect writing. My 3 year old grandchildren like pencil and paper, but it is usually nothing more than scribbling. My 4 year old granddaughter draws with a pencil, but will try her letters, since she is in pre-school and writes her letters there. She can write her name. My opinion is that reading and writing just seems to be learned together, but again, the age of 2 is very young.

He's turning 3 few weeks from now but still as what most mylotters suggested that he's too young for this kind of stuff maybe then I just need to wait a year or two for him to be good in writing and reading. I really appreciate your piece of advice.

I think it is too early for you to teach your 2 years old child to learn how to write the character. I know it seems a piece of cake for you to write ABC, however, it is really difficult for little children. Sometimes they can not even hold the pen well. You have to be patient. Give your child more freedom to sense the world. Currently he needs to do some exercises such as playing the toys or "reading" the big pictures. I love China

We do have lot of activities for the whole day together like playing, running, walking and more. His doing well so far. And Oh yeah he holds his pencil differently. I taught him how but seems like his having the hard time holding it in a proper way so I just let him hold it as he likes. From time to time I let him practice to hold it in a right way.

He's only two. I think it's amazing that he already knows his ABCs and can count from 1-10. That is in my country, kindergarten level 1, knowledge. My children managed to read by the time they go to primary school. What I do is I read to them everyday and they will follow. I teach them word recognition. I think it's not as important to teach your child to write as he's only two. Plenty of time for him to learn to write. Teach him to hear the sounds of words first. That is more important and then he will read by himself and will start to write. I think my daughter was four when she started to write her own name. So two is still young to be able to write. Let him just color and enjoy his childhood.

It's great to incorporate both activities for him to learn but remember that toddlers have short span of attention and they easily get bored with things. Just don't force the kid to learn as he could do this when he's soon going to school and when the time comes that he is, then he could adjust and adapt the learning ordeals and it won't be that hard for you to teach him supplemental education after his schooling. Happy MyLotting!

You are right they do have a very short span of attention. One time, I forced him to write even if he doesn't like it. Though my hand is guiding on his hand but what he did is he took a deep breathe like a man and later on he cried and run to his daddy. Bad mommy. huh3
