Apron Lover?

I was talking to a friend yesterday and she mentioned wearing an apron whilst cooking and doing chores around the house. When I was young all the women wore aprons at home, but nowadays I don't see so many other than on cooking shows. Do you wear an apron. What type is it. Short or bib type that covers you from chin to below the knees? Functional PVC or Oo la la frilly maid's type?

yes I remember my mother always with a little apron on, I never wear one, I tend to cook quick meals so I think it would take longer to put the apron on that it takes me to cook I was actually given one for free at a supermarket a couple of weeks ago it was a promotional thing, I wish it had been a T-shirt instead.

Mom gave me a bib apron some years ago with music notes all over it. It's not frilly, but it is very nice.

They sell those in the Cathedral shop. I like the look of them along with my Chopin List!

Thats funny! Shows signs of the times! I wore them as a kid cause mom did. Now..I never wear one! However I make them for my kids and grand kids in years past and they loved wearing the while we baked. I have just made fancy ones for my grand daughters for christmas gift as they all love baking and cooking! But isn't it funny..all the family shows on tv back then the mothers had an apron on all day long! Now we just toss a towel on the counter to have available should we need it!

Could be, although I think people are just to buzy these days to take the time to apron up! Things are always done on the run, so an apron isn't practical anymore. But I like to wear them so I do!

I think that the removal of the apron is a sociological thing. Perhaps it's symbolic of the emancipation of women. I don't know. But they are entirely practical as well.

Funny question, and one that I have been pondering myself lately. I recently saw a woman on television (in a sit-com I think), who was wearing an apron for cooking. And I was thinking about how I wouldn't dream of wearing an apron, even if I was making something really, extremely messy. It doesn't even cross my mind. Firstly I don't usually get that messy. Even when I bake bread, the dough gets pretty sticky and my hands get really caked in the stuff, but it doesn't generally get on my clothes. The flour does, but that just wipes off. Secondly, if I did get a bit of food on me, I would just wash it off again. I have sufficient stain-removal expertise to get most things off, especially if I deal with it promptly! And thirdly, I think they look a bit silly. (No offence to apron-fans, just my own perhaps mis-guided opinion... ) So, my conclusion was that aprons are over-rated. And they were probably invented by a man, who (in the olden days), knew nothing at all about requirements for cooking. And possibly meant to make women look so silly that they wouldn't ever venture out of the kitchen for fear of embarrassment.

So that's a "no" then! LOL. There is something very comforting about seeing a woman in an apron. Maybe it reminds me if a time when all was well with the world because the world was inside our house!

I'm sure that there is some other nostalgic memory that comforts you. Or perhaps it's just a boy thing.

Yes, I suppose so! I get the comforting thing though, and I understand what you mean. My anti-apron stance might have something to do with me not having any apron history to dwell on. (Sorry, just wanted to try out that smilie..)

Mum nearly gave me a "pinny" as she calls it from work but, because she wasn't potted after all she's ended up keeping it. She has more than one 'cos she's a Gemini and they're like that lol. I'm convinced a long pinny would've stopped my top from being splashed on by..well, I dunno what it is exactly but it looks like something from the kitchen. What type of pinny would I have? You tell me!

I am an Aries and I do wear one occasionally. I think that you need a full skirted one that has a bib. That should have you covered!

dear P1kef1sh, my mother did not succeed in teaching me I have to wear an apron while cooking and doing chores around the house. She even bought me a pretty one but I didnt want to wear it. Up to now, when I am doing household chores and cooking I wear old shirts and jeans where the stains are no problem at all. LOL

I can't say I wear one every time I cook but if I want to stay nice, or at least not make a big mess of myself for whatever reason, I've got a few that I've made that I will wear. FUNCTIONAL, not need for frills for me!

No I do not like aprons. I think they are horrible things to be avoided at all costs but I suppose they keep your clothes clean if you are a messy cook. If men do not wear aprons to cook then I see no reason why women should. I only ever wore an apron for washing up and now I do that rarely as I do not wear my best clothes around the house. Ideally to keep your clothes clean when cooking you would need to wear a full bib style.

I have no problem with other people wearing them. I think it was a 50's thing. Women were supposed to dress up in the home and always look like they were going out so aprons were essential to keep the clothes clean. These days the images have changed.

I quite like them and as I said earlier to someone I suspect that they are a "comfort" to me harking back to my childhood when my mother invaraiably wore one around the house.

I have never worn one but my grandmothers and my mother did when I was little back when dinosaurs roamed the earth. I never thought of it before you brought it up but they used them for a lot of things. They'd wipe my mouth or my tears, wipe their hands on it, use it as a potholder if none was at hand, to dry off a spoon they rinsed and of course it kept their dress from being spattered when they cooked. I guess the frilly half-aprons are just for wiping because they really don't protect much when you are cooking or serving. So I don't wear an apron but I can see where it would be very handy!

Maybe you should try one. I wear a bib style one sometimes and it's jolly useful for protecting me/clothes and putting things in the pocket.

Hi pIkefIsh, here in our country women don't use apron during cooking. But they wear apron when they go to streets. The purpose is to cover their body.

I do home health care but I don't wear an apron. For some reason they make me feel like I am giving up my rights and going back to the old ways. lol I know crazy huh? But, my sister who is also in Home Health Care wears one all the time. She says it makes her look and feel the part to clean someone's house and it keeps her clothes clean. I just wear clothes that I don't care if they get stains. lol *Peace and Love get's you through everything in Life* **Stand Strong in your Beliefs**

I don't see an apron as being in any way demeaning. You'd wear a hard hat doing construction work. An apron is just protection. But horses for courses or something. LOL.
24 Nov 11
hi:) speaking of apron, I haven't noticed anyone anymore wearing those things except of course what you'd said the chef on cooking shows. but I think it's also good to wear that so when you're cooking, nothing will spill on your clothes, more hygienic maybe and also the hairnets.

Hi I have 2 aprons all below chin to knee, a light blue one with lots of cats a pick princess kitten with sequins and a black one with supermum wearing a cape I turn this backwards wen i am being supermum, lol! I wear them when i do baking or if I need my clothes to stay nice because we have guests. I also wear a blue bandanna to keep my hair away from the food. I don't wear it to do housework unless I forget. I am 39 and don't think I'm a granny, I used to think they were for old ladies but they do help stop you ruining good clothes.

Full length bib apron - Full length bib apron.
Most are all white but I have one
that is black.
I have and use lots of aprons. I have one 'Get Fuzzy' apron that I ordered online but like it so well that I've never used it. No sense for me to wear the short ones. All of mine are the full length chef's type bib aprons. Will append a pic.

Aprons are such a big help. Lately, I saw designs online, and they look like they were made for kitchen fashion. If there's such a thing.

Now there's a new term "Kitchen Fashion" - clothes just for the kitchen.
