Man slaps union [federal] cabinet minister in Delhi

Senior minister slapped by youth - This was an incident earlier in the day on Nov 24 2011 at New Delhi, India in full public view. News channels reported it was due to anger at the minister not controlling price rise

Just saw the news on TV of visuals showing a man slapping a senior union cabinet minister in full public view in New Delhi. He was seen brandishing a knife later when people were trying to whisk him away. News channels were telecasting statements from political leaders condemning but making their own interpretations as to causes and action. This comes close on the heels of occupy movements at many places in the West. News channels reported that the man was angry that the minister has failed to control price rise. Inflation & price rise has hit the poor & middle class very hard. The minister would normally be expected to have security men surrounding him making it difficult for common man approaching anywhere near. It is not clear how this man could get so close & manage to slap him. Is this, like many other demonstrations worldwide, manifestation of public anger? Is it real or more publicity gimmick? Do you think this particular action is justified?

I do not want to appear to take sides in an issue and need to say that also that I understand so very little about India. I think the problems are real but who is to say how much gimmick the players come up with to demonstrate a point on all sides. Some of the demonstrations in the world are basing the protest on 99%, as I understand it, the protest is for the 99% of the population against the one percent handling wealth, sometimes improperly, even with corruption, so if this is true, there is reason for protest. I think there are two sides to this slapping. If the minister does not care and would much rather play cricket than honour his responsibility or is actually not handling fairness properly then he should step down. On the other side if the man is sincerely trying to do his job then he deserves respect and consideration from protesters as a minister elected and it is shameful that he be exposed to physically aggressive actions. The problems governments are having however are complex, I would imagine. governments whom control pricing and do not allow the markets themselves to manage have severe responsibilities. A simple example of higher prices for agricultural products for consumers does mean hardship but lowering these prices could mean a decline in farming which is more fatal. Of course solutions such as supplements for farming to help production might balance out the supply and demand issues. In general, these are very complex economic problems that require appropriate solutions and cooperation from both the private sector and the governments?

That is a very balanced analysis of the complexity. Thank you Bluedoll for taking the time to post a detailed & analytical response.

I would say slapping a minister is justified. But then, that's just me. Considering the way they corrupt and not do a thing for the country, all the politicians deserve a bit of slapping. Kudos to the youth who did that. Not many people have the guts to do that. We all say it, but not really do a thing about it. May be it is a publicity gimmick or the youth really cares about the country or the youth just hates the minister, whatever his cause is, I applaud him for being brave enough to slap the minister.

I would also say kudos to the man for displaying guts & courage whatever may be the instigation for doing it. At least that served as a symbolic message about people's frustration.

Anger gets ventilated in different form. this is one such way. I do not think it will be gimmick. of course news channels exaggerate what is happening in and around us. It is also true mainly negative news is liked by masses and hence TV and newspapers report only negative news more.

It may not have been conceived a gimmick by the man but probably he got carried away in the glare of the media and it appeared so probably. You are quite right, many ordinary people must be seething with anger over price rise. The man at least gave vent to the frustration.
