They say that children are not into readings anymore. They don't like to read books and other reading materials in order to learn. They only read if it is required. How pity. Right? The reason behind this is because of the technology we have now. Most people depend to internet. Thus they forget about books.

not so today's youth do not read many books because there are many technologies. but everything depends on the parents for how we educate them. because everything depends on us. but many young people do not want to read because everything on your computer and sit there to read. books really languish in obscurity. nice day!

That was one point I was going to make. I started reading to my kids when they were just babies, and they always see me with a book or magazine instead of a cell phone.

i so agree with you nezavisima! if a kid grows up knowing that its ok to just play computer games all day, then they'd develop the habit for it instead of reading. on the other hand, technology has helped my reading, as now i can purchase ebooks that takes months to get to my country, and i can take as much books when i travel without the inconvenience of weighty luggage.

Hello nezavisima, carmelaniral and aimhrea! Kids need to be facilitated and supported by their parents so that they will be into reading. Parents play a big role. Thank you for sharing your thoughts my friends! I am glad to have you.

My teenage daughters love books. They are always asking me to buy them certain books. I think they each got 5 for Christmas last year. However, they don't like the required readings from school. In fact my 15 year old rarely reads the books. The required reading is not interesting. I know they have to read LITERATURE in school, but can't they give them something interesting to read? Shakespeare doesn't cut it. In that case, THANK GOD for the internet. You can get all those writings translated into language we understand on the internet. My oldest daughter was a closet reader when she was younger. She liked to read but it wasn't cool so reading a book at lunch at school or on the bus was definitely out of the question. Her books never left the house. I carry a book with me everywhere I go. Never know when you're going to have time to kill, like in a doctor's waiting room. I also think kids learn by example. I have always been a big reader. I love books. I have shelves and shelves of them. I think they see me read and they want to read. It is important for our generation to keep the reading wheel turning. Start them young and let them see how much you enjoy reading for yourself.

As what I have said in my previous responses, Parents should set as a good example. When we read, they will likely read also because that is what they see. It will become a habit when done as often and it helps a lot to kill time. I also read using my phone since I download PDF files stories and facts. It helps a lot. Thanks patgalca and carmelanirel!

I am an avid reader, can't stand to go too long without a book and if I am, I either pick up a book I already read many times, or I'll pick up the encyclopedia..(Yeah I know strange, my oldest daughter does this too) I remember both my mom and older sister reading, though not as much as I do, so I believe that is one of the keys, the other key is to find a book a child is interested in. Some children enjoy books on horses, but my son wouldn't like it, he rather read fantasy with unreal villains and good guys. Give my son a book on sports, it will sit, untouched, but give him one of the "Magic Treehouse" books, and he will pick it up and read it cover to cover, while I am also reading my book..:)

Yes, I can see that, because of all the reading I am doing this quarter, it takes me two days to read one class assignment and that leaves 3 other classes I have to read for.. I guess because of my love of reading, and the fact that I read what I call "light" reading, books that can be read in a day or two, under 60,000 words, it is an escape from my schoolwork and the terms and technical things I have to learn.. What about a magazine? Sometimes they have good articles from love, to health and beauty, to suspense, and they are short. Have you considered reading something like that?

Wow! I am so proud of you carmelanirel! I hope I am like you. I only read when it is required to. With my major subjects in college, our teacher gives articles for us to read. We are forced because we need to make a critical analysis. I like it though it is kind of tiring to the mind and eyes.

Not all kids dislike reading. I have a 9 year old sister who adores reading. Her nose is always in a book, which is totally awesome. I agree though, that technology seems to distract kids from learning as well as reading. Which is a shame, but that's the age we're in right now unfortunately.

Good to hear that from you maezee! I love children who are into reading. Parents should support them always. Though the technology we have today is kind of distracting because of computer games which really can ruin a child's reading habit, parents should not be hard unto them. Give them time to play and read.

There's probably some truth to that. My son however loves to read as well as play computer games. He reads not only books, but he also loves to read about things in Wikipedia ever since he saw that it had also pictures. He's 8 now and in in second grade of primary school. I guess what I'm trying to say is that it really depends on the parents. We've instilled in our son the value and fun of reading. My wife and I read books and we make sure that when we read, my son sees it. A child usually would do what their parents also do.

Hello beamer88! I can say that you are such a great parent. You set as a good example to your son. Parents have a big influence to the kids. We must play a role model to them because whatever we do, they will think it is the right thing to do. as for Jezebella, thanks for agreeing to beamer88. I do agree with her too. Thanks for sharing your experiences. I appreciate it.

Hello too my friend! I am thankful you thinking that reading is a very good thing for our knowledge. Good thing about it is that it enhances our knowledge. If we read everyday, we gain information. What we have learned can be used in the future.

I think children like everything that is new but it does not have to be technologically based. I think that if children are read to and then on learning to read are encouraged to continue to do so they will read books, event though there are hundreds of things that they can do, they will read if they enjoy it. The problem is when they associate reading to being a chore like when doing homework and not something that is fun like being online, that applies to everyone people young and old dislike doing things because they have to. The fact that online we also read a lot, how many articles, news items and notes to we read online every day. I have mentioned on another discussion how I once wanted to print out an article that I was reading only to realize it was close on a hundred pages long, but since I only saw it onscreen it never seemed that long.

Wow. Actually when we like the article that we read, we seem not to notice the pages that we have read. It is like nothing and we even want more about the article.

hmm...well Iagree with you but not entirely. let's put it this way, the internet can also be consider as a book, through it you can look, read and also write. it's like a modern book or a box of both old and new book that you can look at and read easily without any restrictions and limitations. also it's much more easier to do research with the use of internet but you shouldn't always depend on the net to do your homework for you...reading books can also be useful since what you see in the net originated from those thick juicy pages. and maybe you can even discover more information about what ever you were reading on in the book, since it's fully informed?..haha,....

I still read books, my child reads books, and I push for my students to ready. They have the extrinsic motivation of earning coupons for free pizzas at the local pizza place. Yes, they spend more time on the computer than they do reading, but books are still out there, they may just change format a bit.

Well you have good technique in order for them to read. Keep it up mam. You are setting a good example to your students. Reading is very important that is why we have to continue reading as much as possible.

Thank you jricky1. We have to be thankful that only a few of children are into games. Some also are into reading which is a very good thing to do. Computer games are okay but it should not be taken as always that it is done often times.

When you write reading, did you mean reading books? because i think even if the kid use the internet, they still read, only it's not book they're reading, it's an internet content. i'm one of those who don't like read a lot of words, such as novel... but i enjoy movies, and many movies are adapted from novel, so i think i a way i still learning something, it's just not from books, it's from movies. Same way with other reading material such as science... i enjoy learning them from youtube rather than from a book with full of words, but just because i'm not interested in reading a lot of words, it doesn't mean i don't want to learn something, it's just the method i enjoy more is through a more visual than just words.

What I mean here are reading materials like books. It is becoming obsolete already. But thanks to the new technology we have now that we can have a fun way of learning still with using our reading skills.

It need not to be a book we hold in order to call it reading. It can be done in many ways and there are many available which are free. What we just have to do is to choose where we are convenient to.

hi cearn, There are children who loves to read even today. I agree the computer and internet has made their playing outdoor games limited as well as reading too. But we even find e-library too. My children loves to do only the games and they do read the stories of the weekly magazines.

Thanks Jonahh08! We have to tell to our kids that reading is very important for their future and also it can be their habit. We should instill to their minds the value of reading. We should not cut our loose to it.
25 Nov 11
Hi cearn25, Yes, instead of reading books, the internet and computer games are now taking over the kid's time. To bring back the love for reading, maybe parents should help kids manage their time. Allot some time for reading books, and some time for computer games. Focus more time in reading activities to enhance reading and language skills. Computer games is alright, but time spent doing this should be done in moderation.

That is now we have observed to some of the kids now. I guess we should act already so that they will not be ruined. It is not yet too late. Let us always remind them the importance of reading.
