Hey Guys.. Long time, no post *Ha Ha*.. However, I have come across a little problem in the past few weeks.. I've just begun a new job (which I have found out now is only a temporary year thing)..Anyway, because I feel like I have a time bomb hanging over my head.. LoL.. I've been thinking of what I REALLY WANT to do as a career.. So.. with my criminology degree, I have been researching much into prison careers.. now I'm thinking (partially due to taking up this new job) that I'm interested in becoming a Mental Health Nurse- and yes I do know of the various courses that I can undertake at University to qualify.. BUT what I would like to ask you guys, is whether you think I could somehow qualify for this role without actually having to return to university to do a degree?.. Id really appreciate your thoughts.. Thanks Fellow Mylotters..(",)

I agree with sid, though you could always check into it and see what you can find. Of course if you have a Criminology degree, you sound like someone I'd be interested in talking to when my writing is concerned.

Hi Vivamir, I'm not sure that you could find a shortcut for something like that. I think they are pretty strict on having the right degrees and education. If you have a natural talent for that sort of thing, you could possibly get into a place and work while earning your degree. Some places will even pay for the education. I do think that you can care for the mentally handicapped withut a lot of degrees. I know people that have only a highschool education who work with them. It's a foot in the door.

with a criminology degree are there not a lot of differemt kpbs you could take that wo uld use your training other than a mental health nurse. I think you will find you will have to take several years of nurses training with mental health tacked on and since you already have a criminology degree why not work on that angle? does not a criminology degree give you inroads in other angles besides prisons? how about forensic medicine or police work or anything other than prison. I do not know how far you can go on your crinminology degree but seems a shame to waste it. you might be able to get a job as an oderly in a mental health facility with the training you have b ut as a nurse you will ha ve to take some more courses.

You majored in criminology, but you would like to become a mental health nurse now,That is to say you want to change your profession.Even though you are at home in criminal psychology which has something to do with what you want to be engage in ,but you must think twice and do what you are most suitable for .

Glad to see you taking some time for Mylots again. I hate to burst your bubble but I think you would need to at least take the required clinical courses. Also, if you like what you are doing now, you may consider staying with it. I realize it's only for a year but sometimes those temp job become permenant. That's what happen with my temp job. I got hired on with the company fulltime in August. Good luck in whatever decision you make. Best Wishes!

You are actually going to specialize... so if you don't want to go back to Uni. physically the only option I can think of is cret the work experience and do courses online or presencial seminars that you company sends you to, however the risk is that to get that experience; let's say you get hired in the dept, where you want to work, you might have to start in a Jr. role
