I will be in New Orleans for The AARP Convention next September. It will be held at The Convention Center. (of course) I have never been to New Orleans and looking for any tips or suggestions from those who have or currently live there now. Most importantly, I am looking for a budget or economy hotel within walking distance to The Convention Center. I have started searching New Orleans. I believe that I am looking for a hotel in CBD or Warehouse / Arts District. I have been searching for hours and I am getting tired.

You will probably have a problem finding a cheap hotel near the convention center since the convention center is right by the Riverwalk and Harrah's. There is a a Double Tree within 3 blocks, not too much further there is a Holiday Inn, a Days Inn - there is one connected to the Riverwalk, but the name is escaping me right now - and a few other hotels. How far are you willing to walk & what times of the day/night will you be walking around?

I am willing and able to walk several blocks but I will be out at night. I am looking for places in CBD and Warehouse / Arts District. I have found a site called alternative hotels which seems to be a combination of hotels / hostels. I am just beginning research on these places. I am also finding a few hotels that are a little less than $100 a night. I am hoping to be able to find a place that will not cost me more than $75 a night. One budget place that I already looked into is St. Vincent's Guest House. It has mixed reviews but most budget places do. You get what you pay for and a budget place is a budget place.

Based on the area, personally I would not want to be walking in that area at night. During the day should be okay when businesses are open, but at night the streets will be empty making you a target.

Wouldn't the Warehouse and Arts District be hopping all night? Same with downtown. What areas are relatively safe at night? I do not now New Orleans at all.

When I went back in 1997 , I stayed at the Hampton Inn In the CBD. It was near St Charles. What I don't remember is where the Convention Center is. But there are the streetcars. At the Hampton Inn , You walk out and you can catch either A streetcar Or a bus. And you are walking distance to the Quarter! ps. Please do this for me, go have a beignet for me at the cafe Du Monde! new Orleans isn't a huge town. The CBD is close to the Quarter. Have Fun!

Ok. I'll remind you. Back in 1997, I could afford The Hampton Inn. I guess the best thing to do is check Fodor's New Orleans book. I believe that is how we picked The Hampton Inn. They will have maps , that are up to date And a current list of hotels.

I did check the guide books and no luck. Everything was close to $100 and over per night. I even checked Rough Guide and Frommer's. I have been searching on line and there is a site called alternative hotels which is a combination of hostel / hotels. I have begun to do research on these places.

The CBD is within walking distance to the convention center. I am trying to find a hotel either in the CBD or in The Arts / Warehouse district which is closer to the convention center. I believe that the Hampton Inn is currently out of my price range. I am planning on staying a week and will go to the French Quarter. I will be very glad to have a beignet for you at Cafe Du Monde but you will have to remind me. Remember, my trip is not until next September. I will have my IPad with me and even message you while I drink coffee and eat a beignet.

I have been to New Orleans once, just for a short visit. But, I very much enjoyed the stay. The famous French Quarter is a must to see and stroll along. I am sorry, I do not have any other suggestions because my stay there that time was too short too get to know the beautiful city more. I look forward to visiting there again. Have a nice trip !

Welcome to the city of big and easy, nothing need to be prepared, it is not much of a difference compare to other city across our land, except that it is a lesser modern metropolitian feels for a new visitor/ tourist, unlike Houston, Austin or Washington D.C.

I am getting familiar with New orleans by my searching on line and doing some extra reading. I think that I am going to try to find a hotel in the Warehouse / Arts District. I have found a site named alternative hotels that have budget hotels at budget prices. One that interests me is St. Vincent's Guest House. Are you familiar with it?
