the mentality that even allows this to be a reality in this sposed "civilized" society boggles the dammed mind. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/11/27/black-friday-target_n_1115372.html?ref=mostpopular theyre sales people.. nothing more. the fevered pitch this year reached left me watching the news in stunned exasperation. pepper spraying others? stepping over a dead old man without any thought whatsoever just to get to that bargain before someone else? so much for tidings of joy and goodwill towards yer fellow man. this is the christian holiday thats been fabricated to celebrate the birth of yer gods child..? but us pagans are gonna burn in he||.. yeah, ok. didja shop black friday? didja shove past another to get at reduced priced articles in a frenzy of peace and love of the season? are you, too, a hypocrit like most of the christians ive ever known in my lifetime?

I did not shop black friday at all. I have found in a couple weeks there will be the deals or better deals. You can also stay at home and purchase the same items online. Just go to the stores before this horrible day and look at sales inserts. You will find these deals online also. Some of these places even have layaway online and will ship for free to the store location of your choice.

People who act that way, shoving people in wheelchairs, trampling over people just to get a material item, are not practicing the tenets of Christian faith. That is simply despicable conduct on the part of the people that do it. The practice of giving gifts at Christmas is a tradition that symbolizes the giving of gifts to the Christ child at his birth. However the commercialization of the holiday and the expectation of gifts is not based on religion. No one trampled over or stood in line just so they could say they were the first to bestow a gift upon the Christ child. To assume that just because a person is celebrating a Christian Holiday they are Christian is also inaccurate. I have celebrated many occasions with my friends who practice Judaism, but that does not make me Jewish. Just as the fact that I would not ask a practicing Muslim to lunch during Ramadan out of respect for their religion does not make me Muslim.

I think it is horrible and no ...I'd never ever do that. Actually even though it is a Christian holiday, many who are NOT Christian do celebrate the holiday so seriously it would be wrong to lable the Christians. People who have no religion at all nor the atheists also celebrate the holiday. Many people of other religions do NOT celebrate it but they are forced to take the day off from work when offices close etc. No government office gives just Christians the day off so obviously our government considers it a national holiday regardless of religious belief. Everyone celebrates the day differently and some don't celebrate at all but it definitly isn't only the Christians that celebrate it whether or not it was originally a Christian holiday. It is no longer politically correct to say Merry Christmas because the day is no longer considered just a religious holiday. Santa claus has nothing to do with religion and neither do the gifts. Heck it isn't even really Christ's birthday! So I agree that the shopping craziness is shameful but can't agree that it can be blamed on the Christians.

I think we've carried the "political correct" thing way too far to be honest. I would not be offended to see a beautiful Nativity scene or any religious display. I say "Merry Christmas" and so do many others who could care less about political correctness.

I totally agree with you. Christmas is a holiday of love, it´s not about buying. Presents should only be a symbol of that love. That is why I think that homemade presents, in which you put more love than money, is something to be cherished. I often wonder how many of those presents will last until New Year. The jams and chutneys I give to my loved ones last until they are eaten. And the jars are recycled and so are the careful saved wrappings and ribbons. It´s not being stingy: I work a lot on them. And I give them with love.

People can be very stupid - especially in large numbers. I don't think it is an outcome of Christianity or any other faith, just the expected outcome of a consumerist, greedy, self-absorbed society. To be fair, some churches campaign against consumerism and Giftmess but they are fighting a culture and a lot of corporations who will happily exploit people in many ways - and not just on Black Friday. I generally avoid shopping for anything other than food at the tail end of November and during December because of the idiotic and frenzied shoppers. Most of them don't have any kind of spirituality at all, they're just well-trained to spend money at that time of year.
