Late at work

Our company allows us to have at most 2 lates per month and when you get the 3rd late, a disciplinary action will be given from HR. Today is Dec. 2 and for the past 2 days of this month, I also have 2 lates. Meaning, I was late last Dec. 1 and today. The next late will be critical for me and I'm planning to leave early starting tomorrow. Is your company have the same policy?

Oh we have the same policy too in our company. But then, because of the cash incentive they give to those who don't have tardiness for the month nor an absent, i always get to work early. Now, i am used to it and at the end of the month i am one of those who gets the cash incentive. It's just minimal but it can buy me something i want. Though this November, i wasn't able to make it to the list because i filed a leave wherein everyday for one week, i will report one hour later than my usual, charge to my VL.

We also have incentives in our company. The minimum is 100 days (approximately 3.5 months), if no tardy and if no instant leave, a cash will be given to the employee. Since from the start that I joined this company, I still haven't get the 100 days straight without late. The best record I have is only for 2 months. :)

Here in our company, we are also given PhP1,000.00 in addition to the PhP500.00 for the month incentive, if you get a straight perfect attendance and no tardy for the whole quarter. But i think, i like the company incentive of joannaleed, PhP10,000.00 for the year. Joannaleed, is getting sick an exception? Because in our company, if you get sick it is excused and you can still get the Perfect Attendance incentive. I think, what they discourage is the Vacation leave.

Hello, sinnedsejatmon! I worked in a call center for more than four years. We have the same policy. Call center companies are stricter than other companies when it comes to attendance. I never had any problems with regard to this because I was always punctual. I always made sure that I have four hours for preparation before going to work. Yes. I'm very punctual. You can learn that. Discipline yourself.

Indeed, its only a matter of discipline my friend. You really prepare well before going to work, 4 hours is so long. Maybe your company is far from your home. Anyways, its good to hear that you are always punctual.

Not really. It will only take 15 minutes but I always want to wake up early so that everything is prepared.

Well, it would be nice sometimes if they were a little more serious with Late's. Back when I had a doctor's note I was always being questioned, but now that I am on time, and see all the people who are constantly late and nothing is ever said, it makes me wonder what is important. I think your job having that policy is a Good thing as it counts for Real accountability.

You are right Krause. It teaches us to be responsible and be time conscious. Thanks for the response.

I think every company complying to Labor Code rules has the same policy which is just diffrently executed. I remeber when I'm still working, I got a disciplinary action from being tardy too (shame on me *lol)... and also for getting trouble report that near to miss :( Disciplinary action includes written explanation or show cause, verbal reprimand, suspension up to termination. I've been in the company for almost 12 years... 'glad to say that overall, i've been an abider to most of my time serving that company. I'm not terminated :) Happy reading!

I received disciplinary action once also. :) Labor code defines that those with habitual or gross tardiness can lead to termination but its not quantified. The only solution here is to wake up early and report to work on time and we must not be lazy.

Company's definition on "habitual" and "gross" and "when it should be reset" is their privilege to determine. That's why company to company were following the standard Labor rules for sure but they may be executed it differently by their own guiding influence. You're right! Laziness is not welcome in our society! Good thing, we're not lazy! Right sinnedsejatnom?!

hi, here in my work late is not that scary one because our boss allow us to be late but the one he does not want is when we are absent,so for him its okay to be late than to be absent.and aside from that we can adjust our time when we are late approved by our boss here in my work.

That's very good Ash because you don't have to worry if you get to wake up late. Because there are times when our alarm clock gets down or our cell phone alarms won't work, and this will lead to be late. Happy mylotting.

Time flexibility for an employee could be either: a) your type of job allows such manner of reporting to work; b) you have a supervisory, managerial or executive job position; and c) your employer's business and culture allows such. So, Vinzer, to what situation among these do you belong?

That is a very good management system. My company has a similar system. But, for me, since I have to work late into the evening often, they do not impose that rule on me. I have a bit more flexibility about that.

Our company operates 24/7 so night shift usually starts at 10pm. But the company still imposes its tardiness system. It's good that you have flexible schedule when in night shift.

I work in a small metal-working shop. We have about fifteen people working for the company. We have two shifts working, one in the morning, and one at night. I work the night shift. Our boss is not really strict. We can pretty much come and go as we please as long as we get our work done. We do not even have a supervisor on our shift. We work hard, and we get our work done, but we don’t have anyone looking over our shoulders all the time. It is really nice actually.

It's good to hear that your boss is not that strict. I think what's more important is that the job is done well and your boss is satisfied with your work.

Most companies have a similar policy. Being on time is critical in life. If you are always late, you tick everyone off. If you are late to a date, your date will be unhappy. If you are late to a plane flight, the plane leaves without you. And oddly, if you have to wait for someone, and they are late, that ticks you off. Being on time is a good lesson for life. Just plan to be where ever you need to be, 15 minute before you need to be there.

Thanks andy. It's really important not to be late. Like you said, if it was a plane, then I would probably be left behind.

They have these policies because punctuality shows discipline. If you're always on time, they'll know you're reliable. Being late (no matter how great of a worker you are) shows that you don't really care about the job. I'd start waking up earlier, being late twice in a row doesn't leave a great impression.

Thanks for the advise chucks, it really is a bad impression having two consecutive lates.

Your company has a very strict implementation of late, maybe your work is customer service oriented. I am working in a government agency and the Civil Service Commission have a very convenient policy regarding late. You will be regarded as habitual tardy if you acquire 3 consecutive months of having 10 lates for each month. But the late was counted one in the am if incurred during 8am and another one count if incurred again in the afternoon. Sometimes my vacation leave acquired for the month is only used for lates and undertime. Though it seems numerous in numbers, I still need a lot of it. Sometimes I used it to attend convocation of my daughters at school or other school meetings.
• Philippines
2 Dec 11
I'm not from customer service oriented company. I also worked on a very strict company before, which only limits 3 lates for 3 months, its like 1 late a month. Every company has its own system in implementing tardiness. Leaves are good alternatives to negate tardy. We can never get rid of it especially if we have children and they need our time right at the moment of work.

Our company has also some payment cutting rule if we are late more than 10 minutes. If we are repeating regularly they give us a warning letter. I think it is a good practice otherwise all will utilize the practicing of late coming.

We also practice deduction in the salary if a person gets late. Being early is the only solution.

Companies have different policies on attendance and tardiness. This is included in the company handbook and that is recognized by the Department of Labor. Your company's policy is quite reasonable though for the first offense you should only be given written warning. Usually a suspension is given for the second offense and gradually increasing as you continue to report late for work. When I was in The HR Dept. several employees would avoid the disciplinary action by reporting half day on the third tardiness. We usually ignore this except during the peak seasons because tardiness is detrimental to the operations especially if you happen to be in production. Many do not understand the policy on tardiness. When the employee reports late for work, it demoralizes the other employees who arrive early or on time. While we cannot avoid being late due to the traffic, it is best to leave the house early than face the risk of a disciplinary action which becomes a bad record in your 201 file.December is a busy month and be ready to face a lot more traffic in the coming days. Avoid the disciplinary action because it is not a good record for you and I hope you got my point.
• Philippines
2 Dec 11
I get your point yahnee and I had to admit that its my fault. Disciplinary actions are recorded in our file so it is best not to commit the same mistake to maintain a good working record.

Unfortunately no. In Serbia you have problems on first late, on second they take 10% of your salary and on 3rd late you can get fired for irresponsible behavior. I think you are lucky with your boss and office policy regarding "irresponsible behavior". I understand that sometimes can happen something in your way to work but if you are late two times in a row then you must go to your work earlier.

Your company, I think doesn't tolerate tardiness. Is their a process for that before they terminate a person? I really need to wake up early.

I think that's usually the policy of companies. They vary, though, on the number of tardiness you're allowed and the gravity of the penalty. Personally, regardless if there's a policy or not, we should always try not to be late for work, or any appointment for that matter. We should value the time of other people, too :)

a pleasant day sinnedsejatnom, the company where i have worked previously does not too strict in terms to attendance. except when there is a project being assigned for you to do. hence, the boss will really get mad if you will make an absent during the project period except if that is really an emergency situation. however, in terms of late and tardiness, he can accept your excuse as long as you can do the work and submit it within the specified period. hence, he is getting angry if you are already late then not doing your work quickly.

When work is project based, that's the most likely system to happen. You only have to think of project completion.

I don't work in a company but in a school. so the rule is not as strict as company. It doesn't mean that we allow to come late everyday, no. but if we often come late, the manager will only give us warning not to be late again. but no punishment follows. though there's no punishment, teachers in my school don't like to come late cos we are teachers, its important to be discipline so our students can follow our good habit.

Teachers should be a good example to their students that's its a big responsibility to show them that we should always be punctual.

I happen to work at a company that is not so concerned with time. I honestly that I myself rarely late and never too late to work, so I almost did not have a problem with the delay or tardiness. My boss is never angry and we're lucky to have a very understanding boss.

Yes I can but due to my laziness, the consequence is I get late. Travel time only takes 7 minutes that's why I always steal sleeping time even though its time to wake up.
