Sweet memories of Shammi Kapoor.

A few days ago, I was watching a Shammi Kapoor starred Hindi movie called ‘Junglee’ which was the debut film of Saira Banu and several memories of this Bollywood’s dashing and swashbuckling legend jostled for space in my memory. I have never met him personally but I always had a great regard for him and I was a great fan of him. Hailing from the famous Kapoor family of Indian Film Industry, Shammi created his own niche in the industry with his distinctive style of acting and dancing. His dances will forever be associated with Mohammed Rafi, a musical genius of the highest order. Kapoor innovated constantly to give the best to his audience till his very end. Actresses like Sharmila Tagore, Saira Banu, Asha Parekh got recognition in the industry after acting with him. He was hailed as the Elvis Presley in India. Rafi and Kapoor seemed to have been made for each other. Shammi Kapoor was the first computer-savvy actor in the Hindi Film Industry who took to computers and understood them thoroughly when most others would not have even known the new meaning of ‘windows’ or ‘virus’. He was extremely well-spoken and the only time one saw tears in his eyes was when he would talk about Geeta Bali, his first wife and the mother of his two kids. She died tragically young, of small pox in January, 1967. He often confessed that he tried his sorrows in alcohol and affairs but he was pulled out of his misery by his second wife Neela Devi. His quest for spiritualism led him to a sober innings and towards the end of life, the only thing that excited him was technology. It is true that Shammi Kapoor is no more among us but his inimitable dance moves and his ‘yahooisms’ throughout his life will remain fresh in our minds for ever.

As far as I know he has a son named Aditya. I am not sure whether he is associated with the Film Industry in any way, but definitely he is not an actor. As for Rajiv, he is the youngest son of great RajKapoor. He acted as a hero in some films but could not shine as an actor.

Shammi Kapoor was one of my most favourite actors and now another of my most favourite actors, Dev Anand, passed away day before yesterday in London. I saw Shammi ji when i went to his house in 1956.I was studying in the 6th standard in school. One of my classmates was the adopted son of Prithviraj Kapoor, father of Shammiji. We had a lesson on film studios in the English text book.So one morning on a holiday, my classmate took me and another friend to R. K. Studios in Bombay`s Chembur area. We reached early in the morning but it was closed. We then went to Raj Kapoor`s house where we played with his two sons, Randhir and Rishi Kapoor as they too were schoolboys. After some time we went to Shammi Kapoor`s house which was nearby. we stood outside the gate and in a few minutes Shammiji emerged from the bungalow. He looked at us and then asked my classmate who we were. When he told him who we were and why we had come, shammiji asked my friend to take us inside the house and give us breakfast and then lunch later. we spent a lot of time in the house playing with his kid. His wife, Geeta Bali was not at home as she had gone to London for shooting. After eating heartily we came back to the studio where shammiji arranged for us to see the entire studio. we spent about 3 to 4 hours there and then left for home.He was not only a great actor but also a great and humble person. For both Shammi Kapoor and Dev Anand R.I.P.

Indeed Rafi develop special style of singing for Shammi. I watched almost all films of Shammi Kapoor. Really he was a fantastic hero of bollywood.

Yes, he was really a fantastic hero of bollywood who will be remembered for years for his dancing style and spontaneous acting and the combination of Rafi and Shammi Kapoor was unique indeed. Without Rafi, Shammi has no existence and it is also true for Rafi Sab that Shammi has immortalized his songs.
