Up to a certain point it is a virtue. But too much is a trap! I thought "gratitude" as Filipino values would highly, positively appreciated. But now, having all those in news, politically speaking, It's obviously been abused by some. Are you shocked, like me, and asked what kind of values it has been?! Instead of being strength, it's now a weakness! Do you find it hard to follow the right way? Hmmmm... I'm thinking too, yes it's quite hard. But for the sake of dynamic openness, our values should be realized!

It's hard being a politician, having these kinds of "values" which you credit those who help you gain position. Instead of them being a public servant, they become the puppets of some person or mafia and they gain power without the common people noticing them. Wish the government in the Philippines would straighten up.

No wonder that our country is still impoverished because of that values. I think, or I doubt If that values will be halted in the coming generations, it could be a cycle values that passes from one generation to another, that's why i felt thwarted with those government officials. And how I wish and look forward also that Philippine government would straighten up..........

Hi kurtjames! I think, it'll just passed through generations as you feel it too. I'm glad, though, that there's some in power too, that's been vigilant to those rotten?! Still not enough, yes!... but thanks goodness they're in help to make a balance. Everyone's help is really in high importance. Our law must compliment too. As I see it, they can manipulate things their way. Focussed on grey areas to escape! They're really a smart-rotten-puppet that should be evicted :) *sigh... I'm also thirsty for our systems make-over!

Here's my take on this one. I personally think that gratitude is just one piece of the puzzle. The main reason why corruption exists in our country is because of the type of government that we have. By being under a democratic society, those who rule can't really help but be corrupted by system. You really can't blame these guys actually (except gma ofcourse) lol.

Hahaha clever! But what else can we do to our general assembly... to the kind of government we have? Our constitution was there at the very first and It's a bloody argument for a major changes. Are we not glad that we have freedom? I know we are ('just for writing *LOL)... Oh yes! The corruption! I hate it too! Can we invite a mojo for an oathtakings in politics and make them curse the oather if they do corruption?... of course we cant! ...'just a laugh! *sigh .. I just can't find answers as direct as it is like corruption due to the complexity of the issue itself. All is really matters! All has shares to make! The question is... HOW,.. WHEN.. and WHERE to start! Wishing a make-over system to us! Cheers mah'friend!

@ slapcaster. I agree that in our system of government, it is easier to be corrupt. Besides, there is also the element of law in our government. It’s is enforced so weakly and not to the letter. Due to the gratitude thingy, people who wanted punishment (usually in form of the government against another powerful politico) have to compromise because they don’t want to be labelled as a vengeful government who wanted nothing but punishment (they wanted accountability but not to be seen as hell bent and unmerciful). However, in my belief, it doesn't matter how many or how vast the corruption of a person. It is either you are corrupt or not. If it is proven that you gained something which isn’t rightfully yours from your position, which for me is already a form of corruption. That applies to any public servant whose been accused of corruption with tantamount evidence.

I see that we are reading between the same lines. I guess any other trait can be used for good or bad purposes. Gratitude is just one of them. Surprisingly, I am not shocked. I don't put people into pedestals, and politicians are not excepted. Every person has a a good side and a bad side. It's just a matter on how much focus other people are willing to put to it. For example, people might not care about a politician's indiscretions of he is doing a competent job. Others will not see anything but a lecherous man. There is no perfect person and people just have to compromise to get the best out of everything. In politics, it is easier to do since that world is full of compromises from many parties at many moments. It is hard to follow and do a virtue, simply becuase it raises expectations. If a politician does all good, people are going to smell a rat and think that the person is too good to be true.

Lhenni: If you sound disillusioned with the menace called corruption [as do some who have responded before me] in your country, the don't despair: it is now a world wide phenomenon. In different degrees & ways. Which is why Transparency International publishes World Corruption Index every year. Hoping it may shame nations or more importantly the people who govern the nations. But evidence is rare to show it actually helps to change. If you looked just beyond the borders of your country and at my country you will hear stories of scams, scandals and frauds in abundant measure. There is only just a small silver lining on the clouds of late [don't know how illusory it may end up as] that high & mighty are being brought to justice. How well sustained it is and how deterring for future is something hard to guess.

you know filipino values are there we have all the filipino traits like being truthful, initiative, we help who's in need, hospitable, we all have it, but nowadays money revolves the world particularly in politics so they obey rules and laws to make many money, that's a fact Philippines is the most corrupt country that has no shyness in their skin mostly politics who run in the senate, congressman/woman, mayor, vice mayor, baranggay officials, up to the tanod, many of them are corrupt and they use their power to make "kagaguhan", they want only money not the values of filipino, so other countries will misunderstand us because of our political leaders who was not doing right in terms of corrupting money to us, filipino was lost their traits because of the evil politics that's a fact.
