yup! That's what they say. On ketchup, mayo, and so many other packages! Maybe it's because I am getting older but when they say...tear here.....I still can't get the darn packages open! I almost have to get a sissors or someone to help me out! LOL....do you have problems with packages that want you to open them by the little slit that says tear here?

I knew right away what this was about by your title, and yep, I too have problems with the "easy open, tear here" packages.. Like robswife, I get my scissors out and cut away and I don't think it's our age, I do believe they are making packages harder to open, that way the package does not accidentally open during shipment..

Oh I forgot, I got one for you, what about those stupid boxes with the perforation where you just, "push in and pull up" Are you kidding? I don't even attempt those, I grab as knife and cut right in..

Oh I have had heeps of problems with opening packages lately, with the tear ones and also woth tops on drinks, I even emailed a company telling them that a kids drink bought at a well known take away food shop needed a pair of pliers to unscrew the top off to be able to lift a cardboard seal off before putting the cap top back, I had to tell them women don't usually carry a pair of pliers with them in their handbag...

Yes, most of the time I do. I think part of the problem is the fingers must be grease free so the package can be torn open with spotless hands. Makes it easier to grip with the opposite hand also. For years I carried craft scissors with me since I would have free time and do crafts while I was waiting for an appointment. Using these little scissors was a big help.

I hear ya. Little scissors are great to open these little ditties unless it's snipped a little too close to the liquid. Has a tendency to squirt....lol

I bet they never consider the lefties! Opening those would be even harder if you are left handed!

More often than not, I have to grab the scissors or a knife and cut the packages open. Once in a while, I am lucky enough to actually tear them open. I think that the packages just aren't as perforated as they used to be. I remember when you could look at the packets and see the little marks indicating where you should tear, and they opened nearly every time.

YOu are so right! They used to be more perforated! Now the slit is so little it doesn't help when you want to tear it open!

I just think that the machinery is so old that it doesn't do as good of a job as it once did.

Trust me your not alone. I always find it so frustrating when it says "Tare here" and then for the life of me try as I might I can't get the stupid thing to open. Like you I either get my husband to open it for me or I get out a pair of scissors or a knife to get the job done.

Hi jillhill, this happens to me sometimes when eating out. It's really frustrating we need the flavoring immediately but no matter how we have tried, still couldn't be teared accordingly. I will cut it if the nail-scissors is with me if not my husband would try to bite with his head bent... Though it seems rather indecent but he has no choice but to do so for the food won't taste that delicious without the flavoring added to it. The package should be tested nicely whether it's in proper function and requirement before it's introduced to the market I suppose Happy posting

Yes, I do! They might as well have written child proof and adult proof. A lot of times I end up having to get something to cut through it or tear through it because it's just not working.

Lol, that's why my husband and I have scissors in the main kitchen drawer. I think it's because the companies are using recyclable materials now, maybe that's why they're not so easy to open anymore.

I hear Jill, same here. I even had problems when I was younger. I think there stupid machines forgot to put the tear line on the package. When you finally get it open it is just about all over you and anyone else near by. LOL.

So very true. I guess one needs to ask for a steak knife so they can cut the corner of the packets. LOL.

You are definitely not alone on this one. I'm still a young woman if I do say so myself, but I have a hard time getting them open most of the time. That's the reason that I carry a pair of scissors with me almost everywhere that I go. I do have to say, the worst, however is those times when you are able to actually tear into the package and the condiment ends up everywhere because it just keeps on tearing.

Yes! That has happened too...or it squirts out all over!

No it's not just you. I have trouble with packets especially those you are supposed to lift a corner and peel off the plastic. Sometimes the corner comes away completely and I have to resort to scissors. I've found a lot of tear here packages don't tear where they are supposed to so everything falls out. If I suspect that might happen I'll use the scissors anyway.

After reading some of the responses, it seems you are not alone. I knew you weren't anyway, because I have a problem to. I have a problem with the boxes that say "press here". I just get a knife also. Another thing I have a problem with is the bag inside the cereal box. I have to pull and pull to get it to open. Childproof caps are adult proof also and can be hard to open. Sometimes I just break the lid and then put the pills in another container. I don't think it is age, I think everyone has problems.

I'm with you on that observation, Jill. There are really packages that say "tear here" yet the manufacturer/packager/repacker did not even bother to check if they provided at least a slit or perforation to conveniently tear off the package. So simple task yet usually overlooked indeed!

I know exactly what you mean. I don't consider myself to be a physically weak person, but when I try to "tear here" all I get is a lot of stretched plastic that will evenutally break, but if that is all that's holding the product it tends to get scattered all over the floor! It need to be made "tearable" and not so much "rippable! _Derek

HaHaHa! I know what you mean jill, and this discussion made me laugh! I was just telling my daughter the other day about stuff like this. I buy International Delights coffee creamer and they have this tiny aluminum cap on it that you're suppose to pull off so easily, yeh right. You really need to use a knife to rip it open and my daughter uses her teeth to open it, haha! And the soup cans or any other can that has a pull top doesn't work that easily for me anymore either. I never could open those darn ketchup or mustard packages so you're not alone, that's for sure.

Yes quite often they don't tear as they should. I don't think many of the perferations done as they should so you can just pull the safety seal off of it. And you are right the lil packets of condiments have the worst reputation for not tearing correctly.

good day jillhill, with regards to that issue, there are really times, packaging of those sauces are too thick that is why the perforation is not really working on the dotted line provided where the "tear here" was indicated. and i too, find it difficult to open. with that, i ended up asking somebody's assistance in doing it. though most of the time, i am not using it anymore to prevent myself in getting annoy.

Oh i experience that too, with those that says tear here. They are just so strong that i cannot tear them so i would get a scissor to tear them. Or if my husband is beside me, i would let him tear it for me. Sometimes, he can't also, so i guess the packaging is really that strong. Why do they have to put that tear here, if it cannot be torn easily?
