Dilemma on eating out

United States

Whenever I go out with my mom to a restaurant, she would advise me to order something healthier. I love seafood, especially those scallop, deep fried, or make with black pepper. My mom would definitely against it, and giving the excuse of eat healthy, and live healthy. I understood what she meant, but I don't want to sacrifice my favorite, and plus I wasn't eating out that much either. So, just once in while, let me indulge myself and eat those consider unhealthy dishes. What about you, do you always follow those healthy eating guideline?

I think if we eat out from time to time its ok to indulge a bit. Now if you ate out weekly or more and ate badly then yes you are eating unhealthy too much. I just can't see spending the money for healthy food at a restaurant when you can make it even healthier & cheaper by eating it at home. I think it's sad to pay big money for a salad when you can make enough for your family for what they want at a restaurant.

Unless you eat in a restaurant daily I think going out has to be like that. You go out, enjoy, do/eat something special. There are some things I can not eat, which make me sick so I don't eat that. But if I go to a restaurant (once a year or..) I pick out what I love to eat. Otherwise I can better stay at home.

eating out is a treat, so you should eat what you want to eat and enjoy it.

Wait whats your dilemma again? I'm not sure if you just stated a dilemma... but anyways you should eat what you "LIKE" in moderation, and eat "healthy" food in moderation, who wants to eat "green green grass of hope salad" everyday =3.

Well my mom is a vegetarian so every time we go out she tells me to eat something healthier as well. Even at home she will fry the chicken for us but she couldn't taste it after she season it because she is a vegan. I don't like when she ask me to eat healthy because I feel like she is watching me while I eat or thinking bad things about me while I eat. My mom is just like that.

My Mom is almost the same as yours, eat this eat that, don't eat this because it's not healthy, etc. i personally do not follow the healthy eating guidelines, sometimes i am going beyond what should be the limit, i am weak against sweets and i ended up eating a lot of sweets the whole day. i guess there is no wrong in eating a "not so healthy" foods, the wrong thing about it is the thought of losing your control and/or eating beyond the limit. moderation is always a must in everything, really.

Eating out is tempting, control the tempt !.. Its ok to eat out once in a while but one you give in to the tempt of eating out ..its almost not possible to quit leading to obesity and all hazards that results in..WOrds: eat out , be in control !

Hi Kingparker, If it were me, my mom would just have to deal. I eat healthy most of the time. I very rarely can afford to go out to eat so when I do, I am going to indulge myself and eat something that I would not ordinarily fix for myself at home. I also love deep fried seafood and there is no way anyone would talk me out of ordering it. I would just order what I wanted and if mom wanted to lecture me...let her but order it anyway.

Hi King, me and family don't eating out very often. We usually eating out only when we want to celebrate some special occasions. For this month, there will be a few times eating out, since there a few special occasions to celebrate with my family members. But, after eating out, i always make sure that we have enough of fruits and vegetables as well. So that, we will still be able to stay as healthy as possible. So, for me, i think it is not wrong to eating out once in a blue moon. Hope your mom will understand it.

If you are only eating out once in a while then eat what you like best! We eat healthy at home and very rarely eat out - maybe four times a year- so when we do go out we just have whatever we think will be most pleasing - deep fried, covered in cream sauce and a big dessert to follow.

Not always. I don't think there is anything wrong with eating them provided it is once in a while but still you can go for plain sea foods which are more healthier. There are many option of cooking sea food that you can request in a restaurant.

I don't always follow healthy eating guideline because no matter how you eat more healthy foods a day if you eat too much it is still unhealthy. By the way, eating out in a restaurant for eating healthy dishes... Are you sure that they use all organic ingredients to make more delicious and not by adding more flavorings and processed seasonings in a healthy dish? Make sure to find out. I have not tried eating scallops, I only eat home cooked green shells especially when you put herbs and spices while steaming to extracting out of its juice. Mouth watering..

I try to incorporate healthy eating guidelines, but I don't always follow them. Personally I think it's important for your mental health to indulge every once and a while, especially if you normally live by strict eating habits or are on a diet. I think in the long run eating out at a restaurant will make no difference to your long term healthy eating goals, so long as you aren't eating out three meals a day. Actually, even if you chose to go to restaurants frequently, most establishments these days are featuring "light" menus/dishes and more and more places are listing caloric/nutritional info for some of their dishes, so I think it's very possible to enjoy eating out frequently while still living a healthy lifestyle.

When I go out for diner, or when I have friends for diner, I forget about what´s healthy and what isn´t. I concentrate on what I love best as eating goes. That´s why I love to go to good restaurants and never cross the door of a fast food one. If I eat out, I want a treat

Eating out should be a unique experience, there's no reason to not to indulge if seldom done. I also find no excuse to avoid seafoods such as the one you mentioned, in fact I grew up on them without apparent adverse effects.

Good for me that, I eat healthy foods in a daily basis. Vegetable, fish and fruits on a daily basis. And when my family goes out to eat, eating those "considered unhealthy" food we don't hold back because we don't really mind eating "delicious" food once in a while. Here where I live we have a saying "Masarap talaga ang bawal" (

Personally when I eat out I feel like it is a once in awhile thing, and i hold nothing back! Whatever sounds good to me I will get. Just a personal preference.
