Yes, that's my assessment based on certain parameters I considered for the hypothesis [in the absence of data ]. Let me hear from both groups what do they think. Note: I have considered age less than 17 as young and those above that as grown ups. Just my own guideline.

Well, I think that there are far more adults on mylot than there are young people on mylot. The reason that I think that this is the case is because of the fact that there are a lot of discussions that have to do with children on a regular basis. In addition to that, I've also found that a lot of the people that I'm friends with on here are a lot older than I am and I'm 31 years old. So, I think that there are a lot of high school and college students that are members here, but I don't think they are the majority.

I am getting to see more people reasoning against my hypothesis. . Must make sense I think especially many people who comment have been here at myLot for far longer than I have been and its quite possible that my observation didn't cover a big enough or a wide enough sample. I agree with your observations about the discussion topics, friends' profile etc.

I wouldn't conclude the same thing. I think most of the people here are above 17 years not less than 17 years. I might be wrong too.

Now, with me around, I am sure your analysis goes wrong... I am (okay, I am not a lady so I can reveal my real age) - 38+ but I am still better off as a KID. Where would you put me? Or I am the Exception that many talk about On a serious note(unlike me)- yes, there are more of the youth around

I don't think so. Young ones usually do not have the patience to discuss things here. I think majority of Mylot population is composed of adults based on the quality of discussions and based on the nature of the site. Young minds usually are more into Facebook, games, chatting.

Hello Cutie: There is no bar on using myLot system more or less as chatting, which I have noticed many doing. . So that may not be an indicator that they will not hang around here. I think there are quite a lot of youngsters who find that it is possible to make some of their pocket money by engaging in discussions which appeal to them. They may not get into serious stuff but still enjoy something that is relevant for their generation. So I am still keeping my hypothesis.

Interesting idea you made there. How did you come to this conclusion, based on responses you've read? I wonder if you can tell a user's age by just reading their responses and comments. For me personally though, I think adults use this site more than young people. I reckon the youth today are too busy on Facebook, chatting and gossiping about their friends then hanging on mylot. Mylot is a more of a mature website where people come to join in discussions and talk about serious or friendly issues, I don't think a 14 year old would be interested in hanging around here. There are some kids possibly but I don't think there's a lot though. Based on discussions I have read, they dwell upon very adult issues, something young teenagers won't be interested I'm sure. There are lot of college students here I reckon as they always asking fr ways to study and ways to make money to pay off their college stuff. Lots of adults too with families and careers. But who knows. Mylot should post some sort of statistics of the population.

I am in the category of youngsters.:) I am sixteen years old. I am sure there are more grown ups here than youngsters because the minimum age requirement here is sixteen, and there is no maximum age limit. You said that you classify sixteen and seventeen as young and beyond that as grown ups.The age group of grown ups is wider when there are only two ages considered as youngsters. There are still more grown ups.

I take note of your point. Youngsters are can be more active than grown ups in whatever they do. So, mere width of group age may not mean that there can be so many grown ups participating. In fact even if the age band for youngsters is narrow, the population can be high! That is something like density of young members in the given age band!

Going by the content of many of the discussions in certain categories, I can understand why you would think that. That is why I have sign up to so few interest.

All I know is that a lot of older people have thrown their age around like weight in debates with me. Instead of rebutting with anything even remotely on topic, I've been met with a lot of "what do you know?" stuff. It reminds me of a great Ron White joke, where he states in a debate, he said to the other guy, "Yeah, well, F$* YOU!" According to Mr. White, he thought he had won. So it's kinda the same thing there. As far as how the demographics break down, I think more older people use myLot regularly. Younger folks are more flashes in the pan that I find.

materfish: what I have learnt in public social forums is that one has to develop resilience to take soft or hard bullying in stride. With composure. I practice it. You could be right too, especially with an observation about the young or youth phenomenon.

Well, as you said, in the absence of any concrete data, we can only surmise. I haven't had the opportunity of having a discussion with someone below 17, though. But I probably hadn't notice since I don't actually look at the ages.

There, beamer! Its possible not to have been aware of the ages of people participating especially during interaction. I have now added my parameters for stating my hypothesis in response to 3honor.

What about the fifty year olds that sometimes behave like twelve? Where do you put these in you hypothesis Push? Count me as a big kid, ok! Now if we were able to see font size that might be a reasonable indicator. Perhaps matersfish is correct to say that the younger crowd might fall into the flash in the pan category. This leaves your data divided into two columns I would think. One side being the ‘in’ crowd and the other side being in for a while crowd. As far as discussions go without sounding like a broken record, oh shoot, I just qualified myself, I think it doesn’t really matter too much regarding maturity in discussions – or does it?

I consider myself a youngster but I would agree to this fact too. I feel as though I'm a smart youngster though because I'm going to use my myLot earnings towards college and therefore I may be able to pay for some minor fees. I still provide relatively precise responses and I always try to support my opinions so that I come off intelligible and appropriate. I also try to respond adequately and as matruely as possible so that my input is constructive to the topic and question asked. But being young means I have more years to earn online!

I consider your comment a mature response and this probably make any one disregard whether or not the person behind the response is young or old. As long as there is a reassurance that it is mature!
