Do you like to eat raw oysters?

Over here, some high end restaurants serve raw oysters. You can even choose as many raw oysters as you can when you are having a buffet meal. The oysters in my country are small. However, in the neighboring country, the oysters are large, some even as large as our face! Do you enjoy eating raw oysters? Will you have stomach problem the next day?

As far as I remember I have always eaten oysters raw. We eat only two varieties in France, and their size depends of how old they are -- the oldest are the more expensive --, but they are never more large than a hand. I have never been sick with oysters, though I don't eat 'milky oysters' : oysters have some 'milk' when they are reproducing and it is not recommended to eat them at this moment, between May and August in Europe. There is an easy way to remember it, we say that "one should not eat oysters during a month without a 'r'".

Hi Topffer, that is a nice tip. In future, I will not visit Europe in the month of May and August, so that I can enjoy raw oysters. I think raw oysters are very nice, but not too good for our stomach if we have eaten a lot. For small oysters, I can eat about eight to ten, but large oysters, two of them are more than enough. Why is it not recommended to eat milky oysters? I think they must be the most nutritious at this moment.

Hi Topffer, now I understand. The worst thing about salmnella bacteria is that they can stay with us for a long time, and we may have to stay in the hospital for days. I certainly do not want that! I have never seen any milky oysters. I think the restaurants already filter out the ones which can cause problems to the customers.

Because some oysters are naturally bringing the salmonella bacteria and you risk to have problem with your stomach if you eat milky oysters. I generally eat 12 large oysters -- not milky -- without being sick.

No, I have never tried raw oysters, and I cannot imagine myself doing so in the future. I do like the cooked oysters, especially when I am at the ocean, but I could not eat a lot of them, either - my stomach is fine but I just don't like the taste after a while.

Hi Purplealabaster, I can understand how you feel if you eat too much oysters. It is very sickening, and you feel like throwing out at the sight of oysters! I have such experience when I was young. I did not know that the oysters were in the scrambled eggs. Since I loved to eat eggs, I just ate the whole plate, and was feeling very sick after that. When it comes to raw oysters, I can only take about two large ones. That is already more than what most people can take. I think we are in a tropical island, that is why nearly all buffets have raw oysters.

Hi Purplealabaster, the raw fish is known as sashimi. I love to eat it too, but not as part of Sushi. Even though I frequent Japanese restauarnts, I never like Sushi. I still prefer to have the rice hot and steamy. But Sashimi is all right, with the different types of raw fish and raw seafood. It is very expensive, and I only have it when we go to eat-all-you-can buffet.

I have never had oysters in scrambled eggs before, but it sounds delicious (as long as the oysters are cooked that is). It does sound like something that could make you sick if you ate too much of it, though. Eating raw oysters may be partly a cultural thing, especially if you are on a tropical island. I do know people here that eat raw oysters (and clams, etc), but it just has never been anythings that even sounded remotely appetizing to me. On the other hand, I love sushi, and some of that has raw fish in it. However, I prefer the "vegetarian" sushi that does not have meat in it.

Hi Scheng, i never dare to eat raw oysters. I hate the smell of it and also for the safety of health, i never eat any raw meat and even seafood. I do like to eat fried oysters or even cooked oysters. So far, i never had any stomach problem after eat oysters. Before when the price of seafood was still cheap, my family eat it every week. Now, the price of seafood had doubled up, so we can only enjoy seafood whenever there's a promotion price of them.

Hi Myfb, obviously you do not have stomach problem after eating cooked oysters! Most people have problems only after eating raw oysters. However, if the oysters are fresh, and from clean water, they are really very tasty and nice. Raw oysters do not have bad smell. if you can smell the oysters, and hate the smell, that is likely to be stale oysters. The price increase is not just for seafood. Even the price of vegetables and chicken are going up. I seldom eat seafood other than fish. I think having too much seafood, especially those with shells, are bad for health. It takes a lot of exercise to lower the cholesterol.

Hi Purplealabaster, thanks for the explanation. Over here, the risk of getting seafood from contaminated sources is extremely low, and the main concern is the cholesterol problem. Most of the seafood here are farmed locally or regionally. It is hard to get anything from deep sea. Only when certain festivals are near, then people will fork out a lot of money to buy deep sea seafood.

It is not cholesterol that is unhealthy for you in seafood. In fact, seafood is recommended when you have heart problems and issues with cholesterol due to the high levels of protein and omega-3 fatty acids. However, seafood can contain lead and PCBs, but the biggest concern with eating large amounts of seafood is mercury poisoning. Eating seafood a couple of times a week is usually not enough to give you a problem, though, unless the seafood comes from a source, such as a lake, that is highly contaminated with chemicals.

Hi Cwong, same here, I love raw oysters. I also love raw fish served in Japanese restaurants. It is all right to eat more raw fish but not oysters. I limit the eating of raw oysters to just a few times a year, or else I will get health problems too. Do you take the small oysters or large oysters? I think you must be marvelous if you can a dozen of large oysters!

I don't like oysters in general so i don't like raw oysters even more. i like seafood though but I'm content with eating shrimps and crabs. I can never a plate of oyster like some people do, with just a squeeze of lemon. Do you like oysters? A friend of mine likes it but eh it is not for me.

Hi Tessa, I like to eat raw oysters, with or without lemon, but I cannot take a lot of these. I take just one or two large ones, and if the oysters are small, I can take more than five, but not more than ten. I have no problem with raw food so far. Japanese cruisine also has a lot of raw food, and these are very nice but very expensive.

Hi Wakeupkitty, that means you are not staying near the sea! If you are living near the seaside, eating raw fish or raw oyster is part of the culture. Over here, many people can accept it, but they do not really eat it all the time. Oysters with eggs taste nice too. At least, they are well cooked before serving.

Scheng1, not everyone that lives or stays near the ocean or sea eats raw seafood.

No and I can't say that I have ever been tempted to do so. Although I do know some people that will eat just about anything which includes raw oysters. One of those people was my Dad. One time when he ate a raw oyster right in front of me I thought I was going to throw up right then and there.

Hi Robswife, haha, I think your imagination is running with all the scary images, that is why you feel like vomiting! I guess you are not suitable to work in the restaurants serving raw food. I have eaten raw beef, and raw fish. All these are nice, as long as you do not think too much about it. However, I still prefer cooked food.
