cell phone as hot spots?

As usual I'm trying to get rid of some sort of bill if possible. But hubby was telling me he can use his smart phone because it's got unlimited data as a hot spot. Have you done this? Is there any wear and tear on your cell phone? or incidental charges? I was wondering if this would be a good option for me so I can upgrade my cell phone but not loose access to the internet. And could your desktop computer use your phone as a hot spot beside netbooks or laptops?

As for charges it depends on your plan. We have unlimited data, so we are not charged. I've used my phone to get on the internet using a laptop while at the playground with the kids. I did loads of school work on that laptop away from home so the kids could still play. Sunday morning before the cable guys came to hook me up, I used hubby's phone through my PC for internet access. So yes you can use it with any device. It was a little slower than my usual cable modem, but not nearly as slow as dial up and it was better than having no internet at all. You'd just have to decide if the upgrade to an unlimited data cell phone is worth it versus the cost of your internet.

I was due for a free upgrade last spring but didn't do it because I don't know whether I can handle a smart phone. I'm at home on the computer I hardly need to be able to access all that stuff on my phone. HOWEVER, my current phone is wearing out. There is a whole in the middle of my spacebar due to constant use. Now I tend to hit the back arrow next to it because I'm trying to use the spacebar on the lefthand side as opposed to the middle where the hole is. If I don't notice the mistake my texting becomes a mess. So yes, there is wear and tear and on these phones. I believe my husband is "cashing in" on my upgrade as a Christmas gift. A free gift for him to give me. How frugal! But if I do upgrade to a smart phone there will be an added $7 charge on my bill. I have a family plan with 3 phones (mine and my two daughters). This bill is not cheap and wish there was a cheaper way. Perhaps if I went with a different carrier but it's too late for that. We've gotten discounts because we use the same provider for internet, home phone, cell phone and television. I think the discount should be higher than it is but my husband did a lot of bargaining and the $5 or $10 per service is all he could get out of them.
