nail biting usually comes with being nervous about something. if you can try to look back and see what happened in your past that made you very afraid or insecure and try to face your fear or insecurities or just to tell yourself that everything is okay then your nail biting may be diminished if not totally eliminated. if your not able to look back and see your insecurities and fears then you can just think of the millions of germs you get by biting and chewing on your nails.

I think its mental stress. I am in some big project for years. And I'm worried because one wrong move can spoil the whole porject. Happily in will end in 2012.

My niece used to do it when she was five. I gave the three options to stop it. One, I would pull out all her nails, two, I would pull out all her teeth and three, I would pull out both her nails and teeth. Stopped her in her tracks. Make your choice.

But no one is here to tell me like that. And also that is really rude for a 5 year old girl. But funny, yes. I could not stop laughing when I saw it. Funny!

I don't know what it's called as I've never had to use it (never having bitten my nails), but could you try some of that stuff that you paint on your nails which makes them taste so nasty that you can't bear to put them near your mouth? It's worked for a few ex-nail biters I know.

I remember that people put some bitter tasteing thing on nails when people bit them. But I found a much better solution just by luck and it worked for a couple of friends. A friend had to attend to a party in an Embasy and she was very much ashamed of her nails. I suggested we bought some artificial nails to hide them and I put them on. While she had the artificial nail she did not bait them as they were different from real nails. And then, when the artificial nails came off, the real ones had grown a lot. She went to a beauty shop to have her nails manicured and now they are very nice.

My granny (plus many other people over here) always said: people who bite nails are people who are pestering others. (in dutch it sounds better and is surely not a compliment). I wonder how extreme your nailbiting is. Till the bones/bleeding? You can buy stuff to put on your nails not to bite with me as a kid it never worked. I think it's a nervous tic and also kind of habit. So find something else to do, to bite or chew on (chewing gum or a stick or whatever). Or sit on your hands as much as possible and take better care of your hands/nails.

People usually bite nails when they are puzzled. Also when they are scared and mostly because of mental stress. No, never till they bleed, I just bite them normally, till they are short.

I chew on the skin just under my thumb nails. That's pretty close to biting nails. Actually, I do that too sometimes. I find what helps is to get a manicure. I'm male. I don't use nail coloring, but I do use the clear nail hardener. Once my hands are looking good I find it's easier not to bite them. I'm not sure why that works, but it does.

You can try a simple idea. Glue a small bandage round the nails you usually bite and apply some neem oil or paste of neem leaves on that. Your habit of nails biting would stop within a few days.

I dont think there is anything you can do about it. I think its one bad habit that most people indulge in including me. I have also tried to stop it but i wasnt able to. I have only be able to reduce it. I have learned to be satisfied with that. Maybe you should also try it.
