wow really? did you use a pattern or just measure them yourself? i have been trying to estimate the size of my baby's clothes since it hasn't been born yet

Best thing to do with patterns birdie816...they come in multiple sizes per envelope. Buy the =smallest and work your way up. That small, you can often cut the larger size and then make bigger seams and just cut the extra seam allowance away when you are done, that way you have a "newborn" size outfit, but the pattern for "S M or L' that the pattern comes in so you have it for when the baby grows. ANd as babies, they tend to grow fast! Or...what I did...I bought some stuff for newborn and then while she was newborn, I was making next size up so they'd be done when she got little bigger. I never liked working with knits so those I'd buy but soon as she was into cotton/poly size outfits..they were all homemade!

Forgot to mention...incase you dont' know....."newborn" is a size. But since no one knows the size of their newborn baby until it gets here....I"d suggest starting with the 0-3 months size. IT is easy if the outfit is a little big..they have growing room, but to small...you've wasted your time and money. Check the back of the pattern..they give weight and length sizes...average baby is about 6-8 lbs and 18-20 inches long...start from there. My motto...better to be a little to big, than a little to small!

Forgot to mention... now with 4 grand daughters - 1yr to 11 yrs....I am sewing dresses for the little ones and just finished a t-shirt quilt for the two older ones and aprons for them for christmas and quilted notebook cover and a cover for their hermit crabs tank...lots of sewing.. and more to come. You will never regret your sewing talent and it will only get better!

Good for you. Depending on your sewing experience....start with simple things...night gown/crawlers (where the bottom of the gown has a pull string through it so you can close it up for warmth but still let their legs wiggle!) I used to love my little girl in those...she was so cute! But if yo don't know boy or girl yet, try blankets and and quilts that either can use. We never had that option of knowing back when I my years so it was hard to start before the baby was born, but now a days...you can know and have everything decorated and done by the time the baby is born! Boys clothes are harder to make than girls..I never got into that much as I hated to make pants and do button holes and seldom does an outfit for a boy have neither! I did overalls alot for my son until he got off diapers and then stopped altogether! But the girls...sky is the limit! I used to also make bibs. Animal faces with the "ears" of the animal long enough to tie around the neck! Also, I made bibs to match every dress for my daughter..she was totally coordinated! Matching dress, socks/tights, bonnet, bib and even a matching ribbon attached to her pacifier and the ribbon attached to a pin that i decorated and then would pin it to her sleeve...away from her neck but the pacifier never hit the floor...and being color matching...wasn't that obvious!

Go for it!!! I made all my baby clothes and had a wonderful time doing it. I had the best dressed baby in town. I would buy up all the remnants at the fabric store and go on a sewing spree and for about $5 would have a complete wardrobe for my daughter. One Christmas I was broke and had scrap fabric and made her about thirty outfits. She was thrilled!
At the price of baby clothes it makes total sense to make your own! You'll save more than just a few dollars I assure you. Then you could use the left over bits and pieces from the clothes to make a baby quilt which would be a wonderful heirloom for your baby to keep for his or her children.

Oh my gosh....go for it girl!!! That is so great! I made all my daughters clothes until she was in the 5th grade nad she asked for a 'store bought" dress!
I would go to a fancy toddler clothes store, peruse the collection, make a few nots, and then go to the dime store (back then it was a dime store that had fabric, not to many fabric stores) and buy the fabric, and notions...(notions I also got at open air markets really cheap) and then go home, pull out my patterns and mix and match 3 or 4 patterns to acheive the design in the store and make a $200 dress for about $10!
Newborns...scrap material if perfect use! And forget your "skill" level...anyathing you do alot of means "practice" and practice makes perfect..so in no time..you'll be a great seamstress! I even made quilts for my babies...out ofscrap fabric as well as appliqued designs. Oh....this makes me miss the good 'ol days! You get to sewing!! You'll love it!

I congratulate you! That takes me back to when my daughters were small and I made them most of their clothes (the rest was made by my mom who sewed a lot better than I did). I even recycled then my husband´s old shirts. They would get old at the cuffs and colars, but the body was as good as new.
