To my fellow filipinos, do you agree with me that our filipino-chinese countrymen are rich yet cheap? They dont go branded for as long as the item serves its purpose. You try going to binondo and the chinese there are wealthy yet does business in the cheapest place as divisoria. I think that is also their secret of success. we can learn a lot of financial sense to our fil-chinese countrymen. Apart from that, they dont usually get swerved with the western ways. Do you observe this as well?

You do realise that this entire discussion could be considered racist, don't you?

"In fact, if you read further on, i am setting them as good examples for financial management" Doesn't matter. Any racial branding - "fil-chinese people are like this" - is racist, since it refuses to recognise the individual and perpetuates a stereotypical attitude. "It is actually very interesting to have to fil-chinese friends" Also doesn't matter. That's what everyone who's a racist says. Incidentally, I'm not saying you're racist. Not at all. I'm just pointing out that stereotyped racial images are what (negative) racism is based on and, therefore, this entire discussion is, in fact, racist.

Aw Spike... No, i dont... In fact, if you read further on, i am setting them as good examples for financial management. There was this magazine in our country called MoneySense and the writer gave this title as well. It is actually very interesting to have to fil-chinese friends. I would love to learn more from them.

I think most chineses who were able to do this have somehow kept in their hearts that it is important to save the money earned and they will not burn the money in luxurious things...

so true. saving money is the best thing today. Necessity is always prioritized over luxury

that is exactly right. Many people who have earned money think that money will not run out and so they tend to spend them thinking it is going to be easy to earn the money as they did, only to realize that they already have lost everything... Money is very easy to spend, earning it is quite hard!

I think what you mean is that they are frugal. They don't necessarily buy expensive branded clothing, but those that are comfortable. This way of spending and thinking comes from the appreciation of their wealth and they know how hard their families have worked in order to make their lives as financially comfortable as it is. As for the stores in Divisoria, this is our old Business District and a lot their families still live there. Don't be fooled into thinking that the property in Divisoria is cheap, so as the prices of rent. The prices there are the same as that in commercial establishments in Manila or Ortigas. Filipinos should learn how the Chinese value their culture. I will be off topic if I would go ranting about how many dialects and cultures we have in the provinces that are now extinct because kids want to rap and say jejemon.

Yes I somehow agree with you. They would go for the cheaper ones than the branded ones and more pricey. I guess they are just practical people when it comes to financial matters. And I guess you are right again in sighting that is the secret of their success. I think living simply by their means then soon the money saved is the one that makes them rich. I think the western kind of thinking is a bit different like the grander the better is somehow deceiving as well. Since yes it creates a lot of noise and sale but in Chinese they start small then gradually make it bigger. Just take a look at the humble beginnings of the Henry Sy, Lucio Tan and the likes.

Yes, I agree that can be their secret to success since they don't spend their money on very expensive stuff and use it wisely. I think we are kind of like them, but then we don't really have that much money to spend anyway.. ANd we usually prefer foreign stuff (music, movies, clothes..etc)

Most of the chinese are very poor when they moved from China to other places in the world and hence forced to live poorly to survive. They work very hard and save all their money and do not change this very good behavior when chinese getting rich. The richest man in Malaysia (of cause is chinese) also live poorly, or richest man in the world (this one is american - Warren Buffet) also live poorly and donate most of his money for charity. I really would not use the word "Cheap" but rather live on what they need.

With all due respect, the word "cheap" may come off as insulting. I believe it would be more respectful to use the word "practical". But you are right, they become successful because they live the way they do. I have a lot of Filipino-Chinese friends who are well-off and really know how to spend and save money wisely. We, pure Filipinos, would do well to follow that example.

Hi there Graceekwenx! Well, ya, I agree with that and it's one of their traits that we pure Filipinos should have. I think they're like that because they know how hard it is to earn money and to be on the position they are in right now. At least they do know how to humble themselves. I got a classmate in high school before. He was chubby and he doesn't groom that much, he's just like an ordinary person. They tease him sometime as a 'pig' and others. But at the time we went to their home, I was so surprised, it's a mansion. And everybody were like gaining his trust already. And in there I saw, how beautiful it is to be with rich people that don't act like one. Because there are people who are not even rich but they're so picky like they don't eat veggies, they don't wear unbranded clothes. And that's really irritating. So anyways, I hope this trait won't go extinct. Have a nice day!

I have a fil-chinese friend that sells anything that she gets only a little interest... That's what I admired in her, she valued each cents she earned and not giving up. She strives more and more each passing day to well kept her means. A very industrious, hard-working people!

Yes, i noticed that too. Those Fil-Chinese , though are rich could really be so stingy. They may not have those flashiest gadgets, but they compensate it by eating delicious foods. They even dress so simply.

I think not all Fil-Chinese are rich but cheap because i have a classmate, she is Fil-Chinese and she buy all she wants but i think the cheap chinese is just wise spender. They only buy the important things that they need.

Indeed! Chinese men are cheap but in a nice way. They only but expensive things which are truly needed by them. I think, there is no problem about that. We must also learn how to save our money and use it only if truly needed. Above all, men have their own preferences in life. If you are happy about what you are doing, then go for it.

Agreed, filipino chinese were rich in a sense that they are smart on handling their hard-earned money. They were not cheap in a sense that they used to live in a practical way of living and a very simple living. I like their financial practice that they value coins even in a smaller cent.
