Now doesn't this sound like a great Christmas story? Well it's about a Christmas gift. As many of you know we have chickens who run loose during the day, this attracts the foxes, raccoons and hawks. We have been running them off with a shot gun and it just doesn't work to well, some one always has to be on guard. So when I read this article about sun powered ligts that made the preditors think something bigger then them was just waiting to eat them I researched this and found out many had some success with this method, so I brought lights for Christmas presents for the chickens and llamas. They were twenty dollars per light, that's pretty expensive but they have been on for two weeks now and so far so good, no more missing or dead chickens. Besides I get a kick out of thinking of giving lights for Christmas.

I have never heard of light being a deterrent for critters. But it sounds like a good idea. I must say that we have found a raccoon here in our back yard. Now, I live in Brooklyn New York, and it is nothing like the country. And to see a raccoon here is a rare, very rare thing. As a matter of fact, I have never seen one here all my life. But he is floating around somewhere between a few of the yards. I don't hunk putting lights up here would help any. My mother is worried because she has a small dog and does not want him to be harmed. I understand, but he does act like Al Capone. But that raccoon is like twice his size.

this is very interesting invention and great it does help. Does the light not infect the animals? I can imagine continues light (lamps or daylight) can be harmful for animals or?

Hi savypat, Well, we are told that a light came into the world on the first Christmas, so giving lights even to animals sounds great to me. I have never heard of this before and am pleased that it is working for you. I have always believed that light was better than darkness. Blessings.

What a great idea! While the animals are in their coops and barn cozy and warm the predators will finally leave them in peace. I think those lights were worth every penny, especially when it gives you peace of mind.
I'd move them around if possible--when they find out eventually that the lights won't hurt them they might make their way around them. A smart person isn't referred to as "foxy" for nothing...

That really is a great idea of a way to protect your chickens and llamas. I would have never personally thought about giving lights as a gift. However, I do tend to think that it is a good idea to give some kind of a gift to the animals that we love during the Christmas season. We just have the dogs and cats, but I'm getting some toys for all of them for Christmas because all of our pets really like to play with toys.
