Your post intrigued me, so I did a search and read a few things about him and some of his famous quotes. In his official website, he is called or addressed by the title "His Holiness." I do not think that any man should take or accept such a title. This is a title that only belongs to the Almighty God. For any man to accept to be addressed by such a title is inappropriate as we are all sinners.
It is interesting that when Jesus was addressed as "Good Teacher", Jesus corrected the man and said that only God is good and shuold be addressed as Good Teacher. A great example in humility!
What is your view of what you have read?
Mark 10:17-18 Good News Translation (GNT) 17 As Jesus was starting on his way again, a man ran up, knelt before him, and asked him,
Good Teacher, what must I do to receive eternal life?

Why do you call me good? Jesus asked him.
No one is good except God alone.

For cristian people who believe in God and his word he left for all human beings, no one should be called "His Holiness", as God doesn't except any other in his position: Exodus 20:3,4 = you must not have any other gods against my face. You must not make for yourself a carved image... .
For people who accept the budhism as their religion, Dala Lama is the representation of their god on earth. For them, he is their Holiness.
Personally, I don't agree to call him like that as a cristian as I am, but that's right that he used all his live to study, to read, to meditate and he wrote several books. As a philosopher, he expressed some interesting thoughts many people should think about the meaning of what he said. He wants the peace on earth as everybody and in my opinion, even if we don't accept the buddhism as our religion, it's interesting to read some of his thoughts as a "philosopher".

There is nothing new under the sun. If a man comes up with something wise, then you will find the same thought was already in the Bible thousands of years ago.
