Disclaimer : This is not my view So says my cousin .Now on first glance this might seem to be a crime second only to murder, blasphemy or ethnic cleansing .However on a deeper analysis of the issue ,it is possible my cousin may actually have a deeper sentiment to convey . When he first uttered those words I was shocked that anyone in the right mind could have formulated such an opinion as if the poor didn't have enough to deal with in their minimalist existence .He however redeemed himself somewhat when he said in the most "matter of fact" expression he could find "At least they will have three square meals" Now do you agree that three square meal is sufficient reason for one to loose one's right to freedom over ? .Now I am going to play devils advocate and say that I think he must have considering a situation in which the person was having extreme difficulty finding food to eat . So there you have it ! is my cousin a humanitarian or a villain , communist or any such tag you find appropriate ?

I'm sure your brother thought that this was a good solution to a problem that he thought would work. However, I think that maybe the ones he wants to help should be asked if they thought this was an equitable trade, regular food for their freedom. I am pretty sure that most would turn down his offer but there would be some desperate enough to take him up on it.

The poor should be locked up, I don't agree with! The poor are people too, they have at least the dignity of the person. Besides, what is the poor and the poor? This will clear up. In this world, many poor people, not because they don't work, not diligence and lead to poverty. But because the social system, or social fair, not just and lead to the poverty. Happy every day!

I agree with you on one count ,many people are poor by no particular fault of theirs but because of the inequality of the system .Thank you for your response

I have seen homeless people go do stupid crimes just to get arrested and be sent to jail just so they could be warm and dry and have meals.

No not really. Having been poor myself before i would not want to lose my freedom and do what they did.

There are other options such as shelters and feeding sites.

I can't speak for the poor in other countries, but in the USA, any poor who has allowed the government to control his live through the welfare system, has already lost his freedom.

When I was in college, I was a minor in psychology and one of the things that we learned about were people that had a very difficult time adjusting back to life on the outside world after the had been institutionalized. With that said, I think that this is something that we are seeing more in the world now because of the fact that there are a lot of people that have been institutionalized that are being released because of the crowding in jails.

I don’t agree with your cousin not because I am talking of human rights here but because I feel that the poor are already taking quite a substantial amount of welfare spending without more money being spent on them at jails. Of course I’ll not blame the poor only…sometime I sincerely feel that politicians purposefully keep people poor so that they have a proper target to spend money on (and pilfer properly) and show to the society how caring they are (while they are actually humbugs)…also the poor benefit too! Without having to work too hard or going to school or looking for a proper job, they just declare themselves poor and depend on the welfare system to see them through. They either beg, or go to jails or simply wait for the local politicians (whom they have voted to power) to bail them through! I’m not saying this for every poor person, but sometimes I have this feeling that a lot of poor people would rather stay that way and get freebies rather than work their butt off!

Every person, rich or poor, has feelings and should be able to live happily. The poor should not be locked up because that would be nasty and wrong. The feel sorry for people that have unclean water and little food to eat. I like it when charity and help is given to those people in the world. I traveled to Cape Town and whilst there went on a walking tour of a poor township tour. I met poor people and saw there homes. I liked seeing and hearing about the charity effort there. I would like to see more poor people helped. Your cousin has some strange ideas.

ronnyb no not really but some cannot make it outside jail so they do things to be thrown in jail just for a bed and three meals. most peop;e wou ld prefer to get given a job so they could feed and house themselves. It depends on the cirucumstances as lots of poor may once have been middleclass so givne a job and some opportunity they cou ld thrive again. so it just depends. your cousin is not a bad guy just niot taking into accounts the p oor are individu als not all alike.

it sounds like the concept of the workhouse, in the uk in victorian times, but we tried and it didn't work. there is something that could be a bit paternalistic about the concept of locking people up who can't manage in the real world and giving them three square meals a day, and there are some circumstances where, providing it was completely voluntary and done with benign intentions, it might not be a completely bad idea. interestingly when we had monasteries in the uk, and the same is probably true in other countries, one of the things the monks, or nuns, did, was provide food and shelter to the destitute. i think, on balance, though, that freedom is a very important thing, and the better solution is to offer people support to deal with underlying problems that make it hard from them to cope with the real world.

can say a good inhumane thoughts, but for me freedom is everything, if any one want to change some thing then he must change enviroment. here you are changing enviroment for the good but i will say resultant will be bad because inside the lock they face other ill making peoples as well, and as you know that the enviroment takes it all.

Thats very thoughtful. I also agree that these kind of things are very common. Many experienced criminals like to do crimes again and again and want to be get locked up. In my country, criminals are taught various professions in the jail to make them good citizens and therefore in some jails, they start earning more than a normal. Ya this is a truth. Some jails here are said to be lucky for criminals. What to say, These jails make you self-employed, educated, disciplined and give you safety. Can you get this for free anywhere?? lol
