Are you bothered by people that drink a lot?

My brother-in-law likes his alcohol. Everyone that knows him, knows this. I don't mean to imply he's an alcoholic ~ he is not a daily drinker or anything like that. However, whenever I attend a dinner at my sister's for a holiday, a celebration or at any invitation, my BIL drinks a lot. He's one of those people that can't just have one or two drinks. He'll drink before the meal and then have several glasses or more of wine with dinner. By the end of the meal, he's at the point of slurring his words a bit and his eyes get heavy. Tonight, after Christmas dinner, we exchanged some gifts and then he fell asleep sitting on the floor against the wall in the livingroom. He did the same thing last Christmas. In fact, my sister told me that, last year, he woke up all excited about the gifts he got because he didn't remember opening them the first time. My girls, being older, kind of laugh at him and have nicknamed him "Drunkle" at these special occasions. I try to keep in mind that he is in his own home, not driving, and he isn't rude or abusive to anyone. He tells funny stories and jokes and is very entertaining until he crashes. I do think my sister gets embarrassed sometimes but she is as used to it as everyone else because they've been married for 18 years. How do you think you would you feel in his company?

I'd only be bothered if they acted like a jerk or an idiot while intoxicated. If they just drink on occasions to have a good time, there's nothing wrong with that.

Well sometimes my sister tells him he's an idiot but that's because he gets so goofy. He teases her a lot more when he's had a few drinks and I think sometimes the novelty of that wears off, you know? But it's never hurtful or anything...just silly. I always have fun with him when he's like that. He tells some of the best jokes.

It does bother me when people drink a lot, especially when they get ugly, and do nasty things to themselves and others. There's also the fact that drinking too much isn't good for you. Drinking in moderation is fine, but not over-drinking.

Fortunately, my brother-in-law isn't like that. He doesn't get mean or nasty... in fact, he becomes quite the comedian. Not to the point of embarrassing himself or getting vulgar... he just really makes people laugh :) I'm happy that he does his drinking in a safe environment (his own home) and that, when he reaches his limit, he sleeps it off. We all know it's going to be like that so no one takes offense to it when he disappears and goes off to sleep.

I guess it would greatly depend on if I were drinking too. J/k...If he maintained himself appropriately, I wouldn't be bothered but if he didn't, I would be very uncomfortable. I don't like to be around anyone that loses control. Sounds like he is one to overindulge a bit.

I don't really like to be around people that drink at all. The fact is that it is rather embarrassing to be around a drunk person, for the fact is that they same some things that might even be considered offensive on the Internet. Ponder that one for the moment. There are times where people can drink as much as they want. It is their own life, their own liver, so really do what you want after all. However, please be kind and not do it around me. I really can't stand being around chronic heavy drinkers. I often fall into the role as a babysitter and let's just say that a three year old on a sugar high is easier to manage than someone who has had a few drinks too many. Some people just inhale it like they are drinking water, which is a sign of a huge problem.
