Everyone has a childhood memory. And he or she may become so much emotions. Far from the town, in the villages, in the midst of the forests, celebrating Christmas has its uniqueness. We would not see the splendor of the glittering decorations. We used to break the branches of bamboo tree and make the Christmas stars. We used to cover it with colorful tissue paper. We used to make two stars. One we would take it to the Parish to win the prize and the other one we used to hang it over the tree. . We used to make the crib. But we did not have the statues, nor the toys, so we designed the figures of the shepherds, sheep camel cow etc. Then some ten days before we would sow the paddy or the green serials for in our hot region we could not find green grass. Then we would decorate a tree too. The elder brother or the elder sister had the leadership and we used to obey. All the neighboring children would come to see. We had a healthy competition and genuine fun.
Parents would buy some sweets and some we would make at home. It was strenuous because till 24th of December we had semestral exams. But on the eve of Christmas Mummy would prepare a basket of Christmas sweets and fruits. Then we go to the neighboring homes, and to our relatives to distribute them This was the Christmas gift to the friends, relatives and neighbors. Parents used to stitch elegant new dress. That time there weren’t any readymade dresses. While the Parents used to prepare for Christmas supper and the next day’s lunch too, we would prepare the Christmas songs and carols. Then followed the famous supper. After the supper we loved to wear our new dress, new sandals. Then we would gather in groups and march to the Church. Today I smile. We did not have battery torches nor automatic torches. Some used to take gas light and most of us did not have gas light. We used to gather the sheaves of dry coconut leaves and tie a clothe soaked with chimney oil. Oh it was such a fun to march to the Church. The Parents would accompany with their similar age and we children together. We had to walk always ahead of our parents.
It was such an amazing scene to reach the Church. To see the Church fully enlightened, the lines of lit stars, the huge Christmas Tree, and then the Christmas Crib, we used to thrill with joy. We really loved the Christmas Mass and singing, even though sometimes we dozed with sleep.
The Priest used to bring Baby Jesus and lay in the crib. We used to enjoy to see the babe, while our parents devotedly prayed and helped us repeat their prayers. We enjoyed to see the crackers flying then we returned home in groups doing a lot of recreation. It was really entertaining.

When I read your childhood memories of christmas, memories of my childhood christmas started to flood my mind of those simple yet joyous moments of the only celebration that our family celebrated in grandeur. Coming from a pious catholic family, mom made sure that we dressed in our sunday best for mass during christmas. She would start buying yards of cloths months ahead of December and started sewing our dresses with the same style from the same cloths. I can still remember the style that she made with pleats from the waist down attached to a simple top. Every christmas the style was the same style except for different colors. She would dress us up for church with knee high socks and like identical twins we would proudly matched to church on christmas day. The boys wore their white shirts and black pants. After the mass service we would head straight home to kick start the endless drinking and eating with many people coming in to join in the festivity. The only presents we received were given from my father's employers. And they were mostly soft dolls or plastic toys which we were so delighted to receive. No motorized toys like now. The foods were cooked by my grandma who happened to be a great cook but cookies and fruitcakes were unheard of then.

One of my favorite childhood memories of Christmas would have to be that of my brother and I waking up in the morning seeing our Christmas Tree all lit up, and we would head for the tree and we would see all of our toys under the tree. My mother really knew how to pick out what we wanted. She got us some of the cutest toys, and one of my favorite was Baby Lite Brite. She was so cute, and I still have her actually because she was one of the more well made toys of the late 1980s.
We usually went to church on Christmas Eve and not Christmas because my mother would have so much to do for Christmas Day.
I think that one of the best Christmases my brother and I ever had was when we had the cats and they kept knocking down the Christmas Tree and they pretty much destroyed the tree and the presents. If any of you have cats, then know that they can and will destroy your Christmas Tree.

What i remebered during my childhood years during christmas was my Mom always cooked lots of foods to be prepared and be eaten in the "noche buena". Our table was full of different kinds of foods that time. Then i always hang my stockings/ sock in the christmas tree because my Mom always made me believe that Santa Claus do really exist. And same as yours, we went into church to thank God for the blessings.

Christmas childhood memories are some of my most memorable ones. I can think back fondly on those times often with a smile and a warm feeling. Family moments were captured so often in the christmas holidays. i wish i could keep some of those memories locked away for the times when i need them the most.
