In the middle 1990's I had an infection that drained into the glands at the back of my head from somewhere on the top of my head. I went to the doctor and was given a medication that I ended up having to go to my allergist and have changed because it affected another physical condition I have. In the process I was not happy with the diagnosis of the first doctor because he was totally unconcerned about what caused it. It could have been almost anything from an infected tick bite, an infected hair, any numerous insect bites, etc. It was more like here is a pill get over it and as long as it doesn't come back we'll assume it is cured. After the infection cleared, I carefully examined my head as best I could and found some lumps that bothered me. I was referred to a dermatologist who biopsied some suspicious growths and seemed to be unconcerned about it until the results came back as basal cell cancer. From the start of the exam, he said it didn't look right for cancer and didn't act like for cancer, but it ended up being cancer. He was concerned and did do the biopsy because I had the infection and that was his concern at the time. He removed all the growth and in between times gave me a pamphlet to read about basal cell cancer which said in 97% of the cases basal cell cancer is benign. Mine was benign at that time. However when he told me that and not to be concerned, I laughed and said, "Don't you think you should not say that since this one didn't fit any of the parameters set down in this pamphlet? Wouldn't it be wiser to check regularly and be sure? Especially since it didn't look right, didn't act right, and yet was cancer?" With that he decided I was right and I've returned to see him every year for him to check it out. I've had other growths removed from my body that were the right type to become melanoma, but so far, I've escaped all but this one incident. Have you ever had skin cancer or any type in your hair? How have you dealt with it?
