"When the seagulls follow the trawler, it's because they think sardines will be thrown into the sea." Eric Cantona, the famous Manchester United footballer who once said that in a press conference. It was the only sentence he said in that press conference. My friend, if you were one of the reporters at that conference, in your opinion, how would you interpret that sentence? I guess you can't say in your next day's paper that "Mr.Cantona wants to go fishing now..."

It is hard to interpret that only he can understand. I don't know and maybe I guess what he is trying to say that don't fall to issues that proven true but in fact a false information.

Cantona's well-known for thinking he talks like a poet when - much like Jean-Claude Van Damme - the stuff he comes out with is utter nonsense. In this particular case, the press were expecting some kind of revelation as to why he kicked a spectator in the chest. He'd had his two-year sentence reduced to 120 hours of community service. Basically, he was saying to the press: "You spend your time following celebrities around in the hopes that they drop something tasty for you to make a big deal out of. I'm not going to do that. Get off my back."

i would assume it was a metaphor, in fact i might even assume he was referring to me, that i, a member of the press, was a seagull, waiting for a sardine to be thrown into the sea. but then, because, if i were a member of the press, and therefore a seagull, and hungry for sardines, in my paper the next day i would laugh at him and suggest perhaps he would prefer to go fishing. you did impose on me the role of reporter here, so i am entering into the role play.
