Searching for a wig. I went for the professionals assistance.

I've never bought a wig, well a Halloween thing that cost a couple of bucks, that didn't fit. So I learned from that to go see a professional. So there is a professional wig fitter at our mall. She measured my head. I looked through a book and the wigs that look the best on the most people (like someone like me), cost $300. Way too high a bracket for someone like me. To their credit, those were in the back of the book. The beginning of the book had middle one hundreds and two hundred dollar ones. I'm getting a $109.50 one that is the cheapest that I think will still look good on me. I wasn't going to get a wig because "Ideally, 6 months of" everything the doctors wanted me to do and I would be cured, this would all just be a bad memory, and I would be on my way. I didn't get the ideal. I got it back again. Told I'm incurable. But more chemo can shrink it and keep it at bay. Hopefully. For how long they can do that, they don't know. Unless I have a miracle, the chemo or the cancer will eventually kill me. I'm 53 years old. Chemo is not meant to be used for years. If I were in my 70s or 80s and my parents died in their 70s or 80s (actually, my Mom's side 70s and my Dad's side, 80s), they could keep me going to a possible natural death. The Doctor said he has seen a few miracles, but very few. This is a single chemo once every 3 weeks. I have two 2 cm spots. One near the site of the last operation and one in the middle of my right lung. But I don't really want to talk about it. I want to talk about selecting wigs.Praying for miracles. The positive stuff. I knew before X-mas, but didn't tell very many people, esp. my family because I wanted them to have a Merry Christmas, which we did. Besides a few weeks wouldn't change anything. Better than having one brother drunk for Christmas and one depressed. Instead, everyone was happy. So back to wigs. People went nuts over my curly locks so I will be getting a really curly hairdo. The person fitting me said that since my coloring is sooo white, I should go for lighter than my hair came back (I showed her in the book the really dark brown and silver). But the wig I chose only had a really bad shade of dirty blond for lighter. I was hoping for medium brown. This has dark brown at the roots and medium brown toward the middle to ends so the lighter stuff should be near my face. It also has a little bit of red in the light. The color I would have liked was not available in that wig style. Honey brown highlights with chestnut brown colored-hair. That would be awesome with my white skin and blue eyes. So my stats are 21, 12 10. 21 inches around my head, 12 inches from front to back, and 10 inches from ear to ear. I have an average head which most of the wigs come in. Small or large, there are fewer wigs for. The wigs are now a little bit adjustable in the back. Did you know you can get a prescription for a wig from your Dr? It is called a cranial prostesis and the diagnosis is chemically induced alopecia because of _____________________ cancer. The Doctor has to write all that. Most, but not all insurances, will reinburse for a percentage of the $ for one wig for your entire lifetime in the USA. So I filled out the paperwork, put my receipt with it and off it will go in the mail today. I made copies of everything. Have you ever bought a wig? Were you happy with it? Was it the correct size and color for you? I was wishing they had one of those virtual style fitters where they take a picture of your head and they let you see what you'll look like in the different colors and styles. Have you ever tried a virtual site or software at home or at a salon? I did when I was younger, like my 30s. Blond auburn combo with yellow highlights in a pageboy or bob were my best. That would have cost me a lot of $ in a wig and with my sagging jowels, jaw, and neck would only attract attention to the wrong areas now. So what fun styles and/or colors would you like to buy?

do you have naturally curly hair, writersedge? as i have known a few people in my life with curly hair, and they are all lovely, well not all of them, but he had ginger hair, and would have been a whole lot nicer if he hadn't had such a bad relationship with his mother. i have never bought a wig, as i am very boring, and just don't pay that much attention to my hair, and if i were going to i would probably get one just like how my hair is, i'm so boring. looks like you are going to have to take a lot of care of yourself, and avoid stress, and decide that if the chemo or the cancer are going to get you in the end you aren't going to do anything to help them out.

My hair came back in wildly curly after it came back after the first rounds of chemo. Wildly curly was the cheapest wig. I thought it would be difficult to maintain, but the hair stylist said you just wash, run your fingers through, put on a wig rack and let it dry. Doesn't matter what style you choose. I hope that's true. I'm only getting a wig for substitute teaching. Schools here, they tell kids to take their hats off their head and it's only a matter of time before I get told by the Principal that I must maintain that rule or a kid says, "You wear a bandana on your head and we can't." I don't think it's boring to not pay much attention to your hair. Just shows you're not vein and you are into other things besides hair. I wanted the same color that it came back in,but the hairdressor said my skin is very light, so go lighter. I tried, but the lighter color in that wig was awful.

i think this curly wig will look very attractive, my youngest daughter has very curly hair, and she used to straighten it, because all her friends did, but it was strange because she always looked so much cleverer when it was all curly, though that was just because it suited her and was natural, as there are many people with straight hair who look intelligent too, of course, it was just funny how it changed her.

I had horribly thin, straight hair. But I ran into a hair dresser by accident who talked to me and taught me that shoulder length was where my hair was thickest. A slight angle cut at the end made the ends turn in a direction, whatever direction I wanted she would cut the angle for. I was terrified because my hair at the shortest was shoulderblades and longest, mid back. Longer and it just ate itself up. I went with shoulderlength and the angle cut. It was marvelous. I had that for years. Then I worked in corrections and they either wanted my hair up or shorter. I tried up and it was all over the place by the end of the night or I had to keep putting it up again every hour in the bathroom and it was so severe for a person with a square jawline that I looked tough enough to kill you by just looking at you. My hairdresser had quit due to emotional reasons. I got another one who was what I call a hair sculpter. She said a razor cut at the jawline so it would be soft there and turn in plus feathered back near my cheekbones with a different angular cut. The bottom would turn in on its own. The feather back, you just run your hands through your hair as it dries. Because I told her short according to regs, but softer so I don't look like a killer, and easy care for my hairstyle. Since I'm always fluffing my hair with my fingers so it looks fuller, this hairstyle was a natural for me. I walked into corrections and people kept telling me how beautiful my hair looked(that were not inmates). That took even more faith and as tons of hair hit the floor I thought, "What have I done?" The razor cut took 45 minutes. I thought the haircut would be a bear to maintain. I had had a feather back cut before that was awful. The hair stuck to my head like it was my eyebrows. She assured me that the hairdressor that did that didn't know how to cut hair. Also after she cut it, she washed it, she taught me how to fluff it back. We were an hour and a half. But every day, I washed my hair, the ends turned under on their own. I ran my fingers through my hair above my ears, once before getting dressed, once after getting dressed, and once before I walked into corrections. The slight curl at the bottom and the rest light, airy, and feathered slightly poofed. Unbelievable to have such easy wash and wear hair on the go. It's all about getting the best hairdresser that you can. A person who really knows hair and listens to you about your hairstyle and your head shape. She said that all hair should be cut in a way that is minimal styling. People shouldn't be spending hours doing their hair. It should be a natural cut for them. Same thing the previous one believed. So the wig lady said the wigs now are made to wash, shake out, run your fingers through, dry on a wig rack and go. If I have any trouble, she'll go through it step-by-step with me. Sorry to be so long-winded.

I opened the discussion thread to find out what is it under the wig. Realizing what you are talking in the context of, I will skip talking about wigs, of which I have no direct experience [though I must get one even without any serious medical issue, but not just thinking about] but rather talk about the miracles & prayers. I will only pray for a miracle and wish that you get your natural hair back, if possible.

If I get the miracle, they stop chemo for the rest of my life and my hair will come back. They stopped it once and my hair came back, unfortunately so did the other thing. Even if my hair never comes back, many people, friends and strangers, have given me scarves and I know how to make hats. Just for substitute teaching do I need the wigs. The no hair and people I know and don't know giving me scarves, etc. has let me know how truly loved I am. Please just pray for a miracle. I'm not vane and don't want to answser for vanity if I cross over. I wouldn't even bother with a wig, but some people seem to be prejudiced against head scarves. It's sad that some people raise their kids to be so prejudieced. We are at war with terrorists, not a religion, a style of dress, a language group, a certain complexion, etc. If we go after inocent people, especially pacifists and others who don't believe in violence, we become no better than the terrorists or terrorists ourselves. Also they yell at students for wearing anything on their head besides hair in schoool and I feel like a hypocrite telling children to take their hats off in school. They've been kind so far, but I'm just waiting for the one who says, "Then take the bandana/head scarf off your head." So it's time for a wig. If a child wears a wig, they can't yell at her or him for that. Thank you so very much for offering to pray for the miracle for me. I know every prayer helps and is heard. it always amazes me that friends and complete strangers want to pray for a miralce for me. May you also be blessed and see all the miracles in your life. May all that is wonderful come back to you ten fold.

I think that I would like to have auburn and blond. If I go too dark I don't like it because I am so fair. I have never tried red but I love strawberry blond. My daughter has cat green eyes and fair skin and she can wear any color red and it look good on her. I didn't know that doctors could write a prescription for wigs. I can see why though...there is purpose to hair. I see why you were asking about the bad news and Christmas thing..I would have handled it the same way. Thinking and praying for you friend

Red, a person has to be careful with. If a person has too much red in their skin and hair, it can be a problem. It can draw out the red more and make them look sunburned or like they have rosacea. Chemo seems to take care of my rosacea except for the night swets. So I can take some mild highlights, secondary highlights mostly away from my face that are auburn right now. Did you know that people with rosacea, if they can wear makeup at all, benefit from green make-up as a base layer? It's weird, but if you get a skilled make-up artist who really knows how to layer, the change is dramatic and awesome. I could see you as a strawberry blond. That would be cute on you. According to your picture, you're cute anyway. I love green or even hazel eyse on a person. It makes them so unique looking and so magical looking. It must be really neat to have a daughter who looks like that. My Mom said I was born with red hair and violet colored eyes. But my hair fell out and my eyes turned gray blue. I have pictures where I can see the red hair, but not close enough to see the violet colored eyes. The flashes were blinding in those days and the bank of lights they had for 6 milimeter cameras with the huge light bulbs would have been unbearable. When my hair came back in, it was blond. Then as I grew older, it became darker and darker until it became brown with gray running through but would still bleach to lighter in the sun in the summer.

Oh yes, I forgot. Hair Physically keeps you warm. Protects your head. Psychologically does way more for you. Appearance is 75% what your hair does for you (read that one time) so it affects how people see you. You might want to check out what I wrote about hairdressers and the two phenonminal ones I had at just the right times I had them in my life. One for a professional teacher haircut and one for a corrections officer cut under the first response. It's long-winded, but as a hairdresser, you might really appreciate it. Yes, that discussion was directly related to this one. You're smarter than the average bear and you should do well in collage.

I didn't know about that you can a prescription just to get a wig. That's way too cool! I'm planning to shave my head by January, next year. And, I'm kinda looking for a wig. So yea, this would be a great help for me! I hope I can find something, which way cheaper than $300.

The prescription for a wig is only if you have a medical reason and they will only buy one. So if a person has cancer for 10 or 20 years, that wig will look like a mess after a year or two. There are nice wigs way cheaper than $300. By next year, the way the prices are going up, who knows. Hope something I wrote helps you.
