Hi my fellow mylotters! Happy New Year! I have been planning a trip to Labuan, Malaysia this February. And I saw from a website that they are offering a homestay program there. Has anyone has experienced traveling abroad and had the chance to rent a room from a local's house as their lodging? Is it safe? Is it fun? Will you learn many things from it? Share your experience...

I went to UK but all were prepared. Of course you can find a place to rent. It is easy to find flats in big cities. Regarding whether it is safe or not depends on where your destination is. Traveling is certainly a lot of fun. you can meet new people and learn new cultures. If you visit Indonesia, you will find 27 different cultures. What do you think?

Renting flats and homestays are 2 different things. In homestays, you kinda immerse yourself with the culture of the family you are living with. But whatever kind of accommodation you choose, I must agree traveling is really fun. With more than 13,00 islands in Indonesia, I must assume there are really many different cultures there... Where are you in Indonesia?

I think that a home stay is a wonderful way to experience living in a different country and learn about the local culture. I have stayed with a family working as a children's nanny. They treated me like part of their family. I have stayed where I have seen a sign saying private room. The best of these was a room above a hair dressers in a village in Bulgaria. I also liked the private room in Montenegro. I got it for just ten Euros a night. I visited Malaysia when I was 21 years old and I hope that you will really enjoy your home stay program there. Sometimes a home stay person gets to learn a new foreign language. It is a safe and fun experience.

Well as of now i am in malaysia so i can guide you a little. Firstly let me assure you that its perfectly safe. Its a pretty peaceful country. if you are coming down with your family then you will have a lot of fun. language may be a problem. i will advice you to contact those who are providing you the homestay, and ask them if they can send you some pictures of the rooms and bathroom facilities. these are normally good. Also you can rent cars here which will be hell lot cheaper than renting cabs.
