Two American men were going around South America and one of them went down with altitude sickness in Bolivia. He had be admitted into a hospital and stay in it for days. I wish to visit Peru in the future and know that is also at a high altitude. I think a slow trip might be a way to get used to a high altitude. Which places in the world do people get altitude sickness? Is there a way to not get this?

I reckon a lot of people visiting places like that just forget that they need to take it slowly to get used to the altitude - I hope he recovers soon and that you can take your trip - just remember to be careful! : )

Some planes have pull down things where you can get a mask with oxygen and that can help. Food grade hydrogen peroxide in drinks like a couple of drops to a canteen has been said to help. Practicing walking in higher elevations or thin are so that your body is used to it. Lots of ways that I've heard about.

The best way is to get used to go places that have higher altitudes, such as mountainous countries and not to live since birth at the coast. And you can only get used to the heights you travel. That man who got altitude sickness never got to travel to places that were as high in altitude as Bolivia. It could be he lived on th coast for most of his life or lived in a flat area. I have had friends whose ears started popping when they went from British Columbia to the Prairies and the car or bus had to climb u the mountans into Alberta. The Rocky Mountains in Canada are higher then the ones in the States, so that is one way to get used to it.

That is what keeping me from climbing high places... It would really be my downfall... The only way to resolve this is to get used to high places or go on a week long trip to the top and back so that your body will be accustomed to the height. I wanted to go to Nepal and Tibet way way back but I am wondering if I can withstand the altitude...
