Customized Medications

Friends.. Do you have customized medications in your country? I am referring to well-computed dosages of a drug based on the weight and age of the person. We dont have that here. More often that not, we would have to take whatever is in the market drugstore and take the risks of having an overdosage with it. I wish they revive this practice, that way our medications wont be a win-some-lose-some.

It is the same here. We take what ever is being recommended by the doctor or buy them over the counter. It is high time that medications be appropriately apportioned to suite individual needs before patients become victims to overdosed medications.

Yes, we do have that segregation of medications meant for the adults and children. But what I think the writer meant was the unit dosage contained in the tablets that that is appropriate for individual cases. I have been taking 50mg of a certain tablet for my BP but when I went for my review the other day the doctor increased the unit dosage to 100mg as my BP went up so high. He is only basing on the reading of my BP but did not take into consideration my age and weight before dispensing the medication.

When I was growing up, that was precisely the difference between a "chemist" and a "pharmacy" (though the latter only appeared part-way through my period of growing up). One of my schoolfriends' dad was a chemist: he could make the prescription medicines from scratch in the precise dosages required by the individual. Personally, I think that's far more impressive and useful than knowing which box to hand someone because it has the same words on it as the prescription... so I agree: it'd be nice to see the vocation revived. The down-side is the regulation and checking, since they can make mistakes which could potentially be fatal.

Biochemists are the ones who invent the medicines in the first place, at a guess.

Happy New Year Spike! I wish they could do something about this! Many patients have to take additional medication just to counter the effects of their initial medication. So i get you... and i really thought pharmacists are the ones who prepare these customized medication... which made me want to think... what do biochemists do then?

hi Iam in the US and here they have adult medications and children's medications and infants medications and thats the only customized thing in medications I can think of and the directions are very clearly stated on the label and insert in the medicine package. some are for babies or infants, some for toddlers, others 12 to adult. I think this is what you are asking. I am appalled that they would not have the same type of medications where you leave.

Here we have allopathic, homoeopathis and herbal medicices, one can see the dose printed over the package, it is usually mentioned as dose for adults and children.. chances of over dose is less; but some take in over dose, with the hope of getting cured soon. HAPPY NEW YEAR Happy posting, cheers. Kalyani
