I am trying to be a freelancer but I don't know what skill should and can I offer. Some of my friends said that programming is a pretty good skill to possess. Is it really so? And if it is, is it hard to learn this skill?
I found a site that gives a step by step instructions but I am just learning the basics in html so it's fairly easy still. I think I will go ahead and master this skill, it may be useful in the future.
Does anyone here also tried programming as a sideline? Was it good?

Programming isn't hard to learn BUT you'll need a lot of experience before people will pay you to work for them as a freelancer. Going freelance as a beginner is never easy, whatever you do: clients expect professional services, not someone who's still referring to the manual.
Incidentally, HTML isn't programming. It's part of web design. It's also something that, unless you're really good at it, you won't need because there are interfaces for site-building these days.
You should probably look at the bidding sites to get ideas of what's useful (even if you never use them, they're a good indication of demand). Off the top of my head, the top-ranked in-demand services are php, web design, graphic design and writing. Though you can also make money with simple stuff like setting up WordPress blogs and so on for people who have no clue.

Clarification: I said you "won't need" HTML. I mean you wouldn't need to build a site from scratch with it - if you're going into web design it's an essential thing to understand so you can figure out what's wrong with sites and do funky things with layouts. I learned it years and years ago and it's VERY useful to be able to read a site's HTML, even though I'm not a designer!
