What's the best winter shoe to keep my poor, cold feet warm and happy?

First, I live in a climate with an average January daily temp of 27 degrees (about the same as north Alabama or Eastern Virginia). I hear about layering for winter and it sounds like you put one layer after another on until you are warm-but-not-sweaty. My question is how do you "layer" for legs, feet, arms, hands and face. Is the same idea? I start out with a fleece pant then move on to regular pants? I start out with light wool gloves then add leather gloves? I start out with a wool cap then move on to a ear-covering hat then a hood? I start out with one pair socks then go to two? ETC. But what about my shoes? For just casual wear) I normally wear expensive black New Balance walking shoes. My question is... ...do you somehow layer your footwear for winter AND what is the best winter shoe to keep my poor, cold feet warm and happy?

Aww...I had this same problem the other day, I wore the WRONG boots to work and wound up with freezing feet all day long. You need some really thick boots (like Uggs) OR waterproof boots ("snow boots"). They have to have a lot of 'traction' on the bottom of them, too, otherwise you'll be slipping and sliding all over the place. I would go for Uggs or Snowboots. From there you can wear a couple of layers of socks OR a pair of wool socks should keep you warm!

There are several stores that sell socks that have been designed for extreme cold weather, they generally sell them at sports stores for people who go skiing, but should be available elsewhere. In relations to legs and and body, there is thermal underwear, not the cutest thing but very warm. You have the right idea, just placing layers until you feel warm. Hope the weather improves and it gets warmer.

In winter I live in sports typw shoes with thick socks but I have found they are not really water proof but maybe the more expensive ones are I am not sure, when I was walking the dog next door I wore my purple rubber gum boots and I was surprised how many people asked me where I got them from but I am not sure what your country has available.
