I just got some tips from feedthepig.org into my mail and the tips are very simple: the new year has just started and it's a good chance to start planning how to control the money so surprises won't come up and we can save more : -reflect - take some time to see how you managed your money during the last year (2011) and ask yourself some questions : what could I do better ? , did I increase my monthly savings ? , did I miss some payments I got to pay ?(you better avoid late payment fees)... plan your steps for financial success for this year , and don't carry over your financial misses -Review - look what your budget is , what are your savings , what are your goals. ask yourself "did I reach my goals from the previus year?" , " did I pay off one of my debts ?" . Adjust your budget accordingly. -Refresh - revise your financial plan for this year acording the reflect and review from above. Consider any new goals you may set , consider any change in life like getting married , having a baby , changing jobs. It can have a big impact on your finances. The more time you plan the financial plan for this year , the better your finances will get. Ow!!! , my own tips are : don't forget to save money for fixing the car , it will get broke eventually , and save money for your teeth , almost everyone fixes his teeth in his life (even my grandmother , she is 79 and having her teeth fixed tommorow). Those things are not surprises , even having a health problem is not a surprise and you better save money for those rare "surprises" Does anyone have any other tips for how to plan the finances better for this year ? Maybe you can go to feedthepig.org and read some. Have a new good year.

I think that I have my small amount of money well planned as I had extra money when I got ill. That is the main reason to plan: to have money for special needs. As soon as I get back to my feet, I will start saving again. Latelly more money goes out than comes in

Thank you for your respond , marguicha. I also think making plans for bad times is a very smart thing to do. Many people don't think something bad can happen to them and they never prepare themselves. And when it happens , it makes a big problem. The statistics shows that illness is not a rare thing at all. You were very smart for saving your money and I hope you will get cured like you never had that illness ever.

I am on remission now, the best I can expect. But I am more interested in quality of life than in a large span. And financial problems can mean a bad quality of life, so it is important to have some money just in case.

Excellent ideas, it's truth, having a plan is important because Churchill once said that:"He who fails to plan is planning to fail".Some of my relatives complain about how difficult the 2011 was, and I say them if they keep doing what they did, nothing will change this year.Same spending, no goals, no ideas, no planning. It really takes effort to improve one's financial situation. The first step is having at least one plan.Good topic, stringer321!
