This is such a sweet story and a bittersweet ending I am sure.

For 35 years, Willis 'Bill' Welch received a pecan pie from a mystery donor at Christmastime. But now it’s goodbye to the pie. The 2011 offering was simply a note telling Welch, 87, of Columbus, that the streak is over. It was signed 'Pie Fairy.' “It has been a great ride,” the fairy wrote. “Still not telling you who I am yet, but my wings are shorter now and I am a little too fat to fly anymore. But I still love you!!” Welch, who lives on the Far East Side, said his benefactor knew him well enough to know that pecan is his favorite pie. The story of the yearly gift made national news after The Dispatchfirst wrote about it in 2006. Identifying the Pie Fairy might be easier if Welch, who is divorced, had a smaller social circle. But he made many friends during his long career with Columbus & Southern Ohio Electric, American Electric Power and the city of Columbus, plus his service on various boards and commissions. Welch used to accuse his two daughters of being behind the gift, but they swear they had nothing to do with it. In fact, in the early years, they were a little wary of the pie. “We kept telling him not to eat the pie,” said daughter Debbie Mathew, 55, of Pickerington. Welch didn’t heed their advice. “I have an insatiable sweet tooth,” he explained. The Pie Fairy first struck, by his recollection, in 1976 while he was living in an East Side apartment complex. I thought this was such an aspiring story for all of us starting out a New Year. Especially with all the economy problems. Don't ya wonder who baked all those pies for him? I wonder if he had a childhood sweetheart? What do you think?

That's a sweet story! I love it! There are good people left in the world. An anonymous act of kindness over 35 years.

Me too. It really is gratifying to hear such stories. We hear such gloomy news every day that a feelgood story jumps out at you.

wow that would drive you nuts not knowing who was sending the pies, I remember when I was a teenager someone left a record of The Beatles called "From Me To You" in a brown paper bag with my name written on it in beautiful hand writing then a few months later a little bag was in my letter box, same writing on it and it was a little bracelet in it, I never did find out who they came from...I have never forgotten and still wonder...

I remember still meeting my childhood sweetheart at a school play. I was 15 and we never married but are still friends and keep in touch after graduation of high school 40 years ago. So I am thinking it has to be someone like that in his life.

Sounds like the "best way to a man's heart is through his stomach." It also sounds like someone with a secret crush on him who may have even been married. Thanks for sharing it, it is lovely!

Awww you have your own very lovely story also! Only difference is you get to know who it is giving you the surprise in honor of your husband. We are having very freezing weather here for Florida so they are saying its going to take down the orange crops, geeez we either get a hurricane or a dip below 32 degrees. our poor little state of Florida is really having a time.

That is such a wonderful story. But, wouldn't it have been nice if he actually found out who it was. What an ending to the story it would be. Maybe it is not a lady friend. Maybe it is a local baker (male or female) I guess he may never know. I am sure after awhile he looked forward to those pecan pies. Wonder if he will be waiting to see if that person changes there mind for next year and sends a pie. Thank you for sharing. Made me smile.

What a nice gesture. It reminds you that there are a lot of good people in the world. It sounds like it may have been an old girlfriend that is now too old to bake much. I'm sure he speculates on who it could be also, and someday maybe he will know. At least I hope he find out who it is. If that were me, I would be going crazy with curiosity.

It's a lovely story, but I wouldn't be able to wager a guess unless I knew more about Mr. Welch and his past life. Thanks for sharing this happy story. And do tell us if you ever find out who did it.
