I Never Knew There Were So Many Steam Irons To Choose From!

My head was hurting with all the internet research I did on Friday night regarding steam irons. If you remember I bought a clock and saved lots of money in the process..so I wanted to buy a steam iron as the one we had needed replacing. For starters, they're all different sizes and weights. Some have a 3m cord (too long, no storage), others have a 2m cord, some are fiddly to use, others are not..the list is endless of features! The ace digital one I fancied was out of the running as the cord would be too long, unfortunately. Anyway, what I decided to do was narrow it down to two sites..Argos (where I bought the clock from) and Comet. These stores are next to one another. I picked 3 irons and my preference was for a Breville iron in Argos that had been reduced from nearly £50 to an impressive £23.99! It also had favourable reviews posted online. We had to drive up to Argos but it was out of stock there so I reserved it in order to pick it up from the store in Town - which, ironically, was nearer home! After paying for said item I brought it home and used it practically straight away. Is it any good? Not 'arf! But I'm not sure I'd like to pay full-price for it. No steam iron is worth 50 quid in my opinion but you may know different! Have you ever researched something specific on the internet then chose to buy it in-store? Amazingly, I still have about £12 or £13 left in my purse and there's a nice lamp I've eyed up on the BHS (British Home Stores) site for £15 that I might take a look at tomorrow. I'm sure John won't begrudge the extra he'd have to fork out lol. I do actually need a lamp because I currently have one in the living-room near the computer then take it upstairs to use in the bedroom..and the bulbs keep blowing out on me..so keeping it in one place will be better I think. It's great that my £45 is being stretched so far, especially with sales being on at the moment. I could so easily have bought a fancy item of clothing with it but chose not to.

You seem to be a good bargain hunter. I look for things on sale myself. As far as irons go, as long as it works and the price is right, then thats what I would buy. Lamps can be expensive and I always look for deals where I can save money.

Yes, it's got to the point where I very rarely pay full price for anything now. I've decided not to buy a lamp for now although I might change my mind as the week goes on!

Look, as long as you get a great price on it, then it would be a good idea to get one. I have also learned that when you want or need something, go for it. Now, not everything is good as a great deal. Some things are worth their weight in gold no matter what they cost. I know because when I bought my iMac 4 years ago, I paid a lot for it, but it is still like new and works just as fast. So, this was an investment. But when it comes to certain things like lamps, irons, etc... then looking for sales is always a good idea.

The eMac first off is no longer made. Second it is real old. And I mean old. But I bet it still works. I know a computer expert can get that thing working like a new one. But things have changed a lot since the eMac. And the eMac was originally made for schools. They released them to the public for a short time. That has to be from the late 90's.

Hi Janey1966, Yep I do this a great deal, especially with the likes of Argos or even Smyths toy store or Game Stop. It's great that there are reviews one can read, makes it worth knowing whether something is worth buying or not. For instance, I've got to get a pump for these air beds I've had for ages and was going to go for the cheapest one (nearly €7) but upon reading the reviews I figure I won't now and there's a much better one for less than double that, plus it's electric rather than having to be worked manually. You got a good bargain there and ditto on not paying £50 for a steam iron, they never last that long anyway. IrishGall77 :)

Hello! I know what you mean about reviews actually changing my mind on a product I - initially, wanted. People tend to be honest and would gain nothing by coming out with untruths..reviews like those stick out like a sore thumb, do you know what I mean? Yes, I agree that steam irons are designed to fail earlier than ever. Gone are the irons that would last around 10 years..more like 2 if you're lucky. Oh well, at least this iron is a good one and I feel rather smug at getting it so cheap!

Good for you! With this new iron I'm even going to iron a duvet cover tomorrow. I haven't done this for a while as the old iron didn't do the job properly. If the pillowcases are anything to go by the cover should be a breeze!

Well Breville is a good make. I bought a steam generator iron a few years back, it cost over €100, wasn't the cheapest nor the most expensive but with the hard water and limescale round here it lasted only 6 or 7 months. Back to the cheapy ones now and once it does the job I'm happy ;)

Last year I went out to buy a decent iron because the steam irons that we had been using all seemed to last about 18 months. I went to Tesco and bought..... you may have to sit down now.... an iron that cost £129!!! It has a separate water tank , produces fantastic steam and irons like a dream. Waitrose had it in their sale at £89!! Gutted? yes. LOL. Yours is fantastic value and you got change! Supreme thrift! LOL.

Waitrose cheaper than Tesco? My, no wonder you were gutted! I like the term "supreme thrift." Very good!

It's great that you're stretching not only your £45, but also your Christmas gift giving (to yourself) mood! I actually find that most the things I find online, are always not available in the actual stores. I went to Bestbuy this Christmas to buy my son a TV. I saw one online which was just $99. When I came to the store the guy said that what I saw was a re-furbished one, and the 'refurb' products are only available online. This meant shipping costs added. I don't like it as the actual store is just a couple blocks away from my house.

Mmm, I wouldn't like that either. In some cases there are Web Exclusives and this applied to our recent television and a printer of mine..just two examples. However, they were delivered free to the stores in question. Hubby just had to drive me to them rather than me having to pay a delivery charge, which can be quite high for larger items.

You made careful calculation and strict budgeting and at last spent all your £ 50 on what are badly in need of, not so much as bought a clothing you fancy.Your brother will be moved by what you have done if he hears of that.Would you tell me what the Not'arf! stands for.

LOL. "Not 'arf" is a slang term and it should read "not half." It's just that's how we say it..without the "h." I should imagine the closest word to it would be "absolutely" or "definitely" that type of thing. Hope this helps!

I've never bought an iron, steam or otherwise. When I went off to college I took my mom's old iron with me. It weighs a ton but it still works. It may even be older than me, for all I know, because it's the only one I remember her using until someone bought her a steam iron for Christmas one year in the 60s.

Yes, I remember a very heavy iron when I was little and we still had it when I became a teenager. My Dad (who actually likes ironing as he'd do it for money in the Army 'cos no-one else did) is always comparing the latest irons to the old one. I can't remember the make though..probably a Rowenta.
