Hi Friends, This is my first post of the year 2012 and starting this with wishing you all a great year 2012. I was reading newspaper this morning and there was an article about saying thank you is considered old fashioned .. is it so. I can hear words like "cool" very often in the official meetings also some time people say cheers however I was expecting a thank you... not sure if I am not updated as per changing society moods on certain things or people around me have changed so much which I could not accept. I believe that "Thank you" is something, I have been saying to everyone who did something to do my job better or helped me in living a better life. Thank you can not be replaced by any other words. I would not be worried to be called old fashioned because of using this word and not using other words which are supposed as substitute of "Thank You". What do you think about it? Thank you for sharing.

Thank You is a word that should never be replaced, but the young people of today seem to have forgotten the word, I was brought up to always say thank you especially when given a gift which I have noticed I never did get a thank you from the young people I sent Christmas presents to, thank you was an automatic gesture in my day....very very sad....

Young peoples are coming up with new short cuts of all these words. Recently one of my friends daughter introduced her friend as she is my BFF. I said what does that mean it was Best Friend forever. Good to know all these words but Thank you can not be replaced. Thanks for your response.

Happy new year Ajay! Thank you for posting this topic. Me, myself, is also aware of what you are pointing on this topic. At my work, my workmates and even my supervisor are saying "cheers, cool and great" in behalf of saying thank you. I am also sometime expecting some people to respond thanks or thank you after I've done something for them, but in return, my expectations went far from it. Saying thanks or thank you is not really an old fashion way for, it's not really a big deal for me, because even I, also sometimes say cheers, cool and great instead of thank you or thanks. But of course, I believe that you can't take away to some people saying the word thanks or thank you even if the new society now has other words or terms on how to say them... Classic is still the same old wonderful sound of music in my ears :) Cheers!

i was raised to say thank you and you're welcome. not...cool, fab or cheers. i have taught my children to say thank you and you're welcome. it's called using proper manners. if people want to think that's old fashioned....let them! nothing should substitute manners.

Hi Ajay Singh Baghel: As you do, I prefer to say "Thank You" and even if there are some other formulas to express that you are satisfied and to greet someone, I think "Thank You" is the more polite. Even with that, I think that intention is what should matters so I won't be bothered if someone use Fab, Cool or Cheers to me instead of the classical "Thank you". ALVARO

We are on the same line of thinking about that, my friend. For me, old fashioned though it may be, i still like to say thank you over any modern words. Nothing beats the sincerity of saying thank you. Saying that really enables you to show your gratitude to the recipient. And i prefer hearing thank you too, over those modern words.

Writers run out of things to write I think sometimes. On the subject though I think I will go with you on this and say fashioned whether old or not thank you is a very good way of expressing appreciation. The other words cheers is a salute' that is alright too in certain circumstances depending on the situation. I like to write my email for example in a letter writing format but can as well leave off the salutation completely and substitute others depending on the audience or the subject matter. Sometimes it is matter of attitudes and seriousness.

Thank you works best in my opinion. I fell good when some says Thanks to me instead of Cheers or cool or anything else. Thank you for sharing.

Hi AjaySinghBaghel, A very Happy New Year 2012 to you too! It's not something I can say that I have thought a lot about but have noticed people using the word 'cheers' instead of 'thank you' from time to time; I do it myself on occasion but would use 'thanks' or 'thank you' more often than not. What seems to get me is the lack of manners here....I'd rather someone said cheers that nothing at all. Manners is free, costs absolutely nothing to say thanks to someone that's what gets my back up! I would prefer to say Thanks or Thank you instead of anything else if it was an official conversation. I may say cheers or cool in non-professional manner. Thank you for sharing.

that word is not used very often.i am from the old school and been taught since working that if some one does something nice for u or help u into what ever yr doing to thank that person. its just common sence to do that. some people take it for granted that if u do something for them u have to. politeness and curtuisty is the best thing. ill tell u a little storry--yesterday i was going down my stairs cause i had some stuff for the good will.i got to the end of the stairs and i was having troubles opening the door and remover my cart at thesame time. a stranger came and held the door so i could get out with my cart safely and when i got out.i stood and turned to him an his lady friend and thanked both of them for their help. they didnt have to do that but they did and that is where thank-you came in. thank-yous and may i help u is a great thing and should be used more ofter.

Even I consider me from old school and believe that old school fundamentals are better than today's dictionary. May be Cool or cheers will be more liked by younger generation but I still believe and prefer Thank you over anything else. Thanks for sharing.
