I found a budgie in the wild, i caught it and keep it as a pet in a bird cage. I think it was a pet that managed to escape. It is scared of me and seems like it wants to get out of the cage all the time. Is it cruel of me to keep it. i think since it had a taste of the wild it keeps wanting to escape and i cant seem to tame it.

While, yes, I believe a bird in a cage is a sad sight indeed, the fact of the matter is, a bird that has been domesticated will not survive in the wild. They don't know how to fend for themselves, and predators would get them within their first "wild" week. I would say get the bird a large cage. What is the weather like where you are? Is there anyway you can get the bird an out door avairy? Budgie's are small, so an outdoor avairy that is about...oh...6 foot tall, 4 foot perimeter (square shape) would be a very nice space. Of course, the bigger it is the more space they have to fly (which is what they were born, and love, to do). And I don't know if you know a lot about budgies, but they are very social birds. I would suggest that you get one or two friends for him (same species, same gender). If you do get it friends, you really need to have all the birds genders checked by a reliable vet. You don't want babies!!!

I forgot to mention that it is also important you gie birds toys! Because they are in a cage, they have to have stuff to do so they don't literally go crazy! They need perches n different levels, some kind of nesting area, and toys!!!! Birds really like toys with bells on them, they need foraging toys, toys with blocks and/or rope they can chew on, swings!!! They also like mirrors. I think if you had an outdoor avairy like the one I mentioned above, complete with toys/perches/ and nesting you would have sme extremely happy birds!

Sorry I keep finding things I want to say! Outdoor avaries can be expensive (unless you can find someone selling one for a cheaper price). But if you are handy, or know someone who is handy, you can design and build your own for much MUCH cheaper! and you can have a lot of fun with the design!

Well dear birds are meant to fly freely. If you catch and cage them, it is just like catching and putting a person in prison. I believe it is not right to cage a bird. Even if you are taking care of the bird still it is a form of cruelty because the bird is deprived of the right to enjoy the freedom that is meant for it It has wings and God gave those wings so it could fly around and enjoy its life along with other birds. If the bird would just sit alone in a cage, then it would be forever lonely unless it could manage to escape.

Caged Bird - It must be missing the freedom in the woods.
Bird Aviary? Although it looks really beautiful to see different kinds of birds in an aviary, somehow I feel sad for these birds because they are still imprisoned and don't enjoy the real freedom of birds in the woods and wilderness. They can't fly and go around wherever they want. Their world is limited and that is to me a form of deprivation of liberty. I believe there is nothing like total freedom for a bird and I wish this could be given to all of them.

Dear karin! No animals in this World would like to live in captivity once they have tasted the nature and its beauty! a caged bird looses its freedom which no body likes! In nature birds have their own world, they have different varieties of food, they have different places to fly and enjoy their life! In due course of time they make a mate to propagate themselves, In that action some birds build their own nests which are their own made and that is why they are the most cosiest and adorable place for them. all these things are missed in a cage by the bird! Yes, love birds or aquarium fish what we get in the pet shop are bred i captivity and they haven't seen the outside world so they can live comfortably in descent sized cage1 But the wild ones definitely they can't be reared in the cages! So,I think at this juncture I think you should be really happy that your bird has gone to its natural habitat and have saved you from committing a sin of torturing an innocent bird! Be happy and thank the Almighty for what has happened! All the best! It was nice topic of discussion and I liked participating in it! Thanks!

I think that it is cruel to catch a wild bird and keep it in captivity, there are birds like canaries and budgies that are breed in captivity, and that actually can not survive successfully in nature, in that case a cage is a must, but it has to be large enough for the bird to move on it reasonable free. I do not know whre are you from, but, if the budgie is a native bird, and there is a flock, where he can be happy, maybe you can consider to free the little fellow, otherwise, keep it, and, buy him a couple. I had some, in the past, and they reproduce easily, it´s fun and nice.

hello, If the bird really want to go out then set him free because maybe he is looking for something that is not used to do. I think that is not cruel at all but it is still your decision if you gonna let him out. But I can say that have mercy in him because he will be sad inside the cage.

I really dontknow what to do, so many different comments, maybe i should take it to an aviary where he can atleast be in contact with other birds, and where he could still use his wings, im just scared to let hom go, knowing there is a possiblity that he wont survive, esp here in my country weve been geting big rain and storms in the afternoons.

It all depends on what they are used to. If a pet is born in the wild, it will not want to be confined to a cage. But, if it has spent its whole life in a cage, it will be terrified of freedom.

it is the whole zoo argument. is it fair to keep animals in a cage? what about as pets? if it was wild, perhaps you should let it go.

Birds are meant to be free. So yes, I think it's very inconsiderate of us to trap them in a cage. No cage is ever big enough for a bird. Imagine yourself in prison for a crime you did not commit. It's the same thing.

If it is indeed a budgie, than it was someone's pet. Birds have a tendency to be one person animals. You don't say how long you've had it, but it isn't very long, you probably just need to give it time to get used to you. I found someone's pet bird too in my yard one day. It was fall, and I knew the bird wouldn't survive outside, so I brought it in and made a cage for it. Then I made fliers and posted them around the neighborhood. The owners saw my poster, and came and got it. You might want to do that, if you seriously can't seem to get it to tame down for you.

I sometimes think it's mean to keep a bird in a cage. It all depends on whether you care about the budgie being conscious about its surroundings. In your case, it was born in the wild, and I don't really think it's used to being in an enclosed area. Being put in a box and being shipped away from free, open air where you can roam is real shocking - put yourself in the bird's place.

No one want to be bound by something or someone. So human advocate freedom. We say:god give the freedom to us.It is a gift of god.So anyone can't expropriate it.We are life, and the budgie also is a life.Friend,if you are unhappy to see the budgie like this, releasing it to give the freedom back.

yes, it may be something cruel because those deprived of their liberty. however, we also provide them with food and affection . it´s best to buy or make the cage bigger than we have so that they can fly and live in dignity

They are really cute.I had one while I was a kid.One idea is that you keep it for a few days. Then visit a place which has trees and fruits these birds like.If you visit those places once in a while ,when you are free ,you will see a lot of such birds.Take a binocular with you.You may get to watch a lot of them in their natural environment.Take a camera also with you.

Well I don't think it's cruel for you to keep it as long as you are a responsible pet owner(feed it, give it water, and such). But since you are saying it is wild, you need to at least give it a bigger cage or habitat so that there would be enough room for the bird to fly a bit. I think it will get used to being captured when time comes specially if you take real good care of it.

I think so. There are so few bird outside there on their nature to fly freely and try hard to look for their own food. This bird which is wild and trying to escape means that it is strong animal and had trained by the nature to survive in free life. So, it would be great to see those strong wild birds flying freely on the sky, rather than seeing weak animal that can't survive on the free habitat.

Definetly. No one likes to be in a cage so why a innocent bird would.what if you are bounded in a cage. You are given all the facilities but one thing is you just have to be in that cage all the time, you cannot go anywhere, you cannot meet anyone...HOW WOULD YOU FEEL? just think about it once..There is a say that " even if a cage is of gold, it is a cage". let that bird free karin...i request you on its behalf...
