Very worried about my daughter

I’m so worried about my daughter. I’m beyond worried, and praying. This morning when I got the news I lost my ability to talk on the phone with her and started praying in tongues. I couldn’t have stopped it if I had wanted to… it all just came out. My daughter has been having dizzy spells to the point where she can’t see or even walk on her own. When she gets dizzy her vision goes up and down and she said it is like when the TV picture rolls (those who grew up in the 50s know what a rolling TV picture looks like.. when the vertical isn’t steady). She said that is the way it looks.. everything is jumping up and down in her vision. She gets nauseous and has to be helped to the bathroom. She went to the doctor and she drew blood on my daughter. My daughter was out with her hubby getting a few things I need and the doctor called her on her cell phone. The doc said that he calcium is very high… so the doc said for her to come in Friday for more blood tests. I’m worried sick because this has happened before. When her calcium level was very high before she was passing out if they happened when she was standing or walking. Then, it was her kidneys. The Lithium she was on for bipolar had caused her kidneys to lose their functioning and she ended up with only 40 percent of her kidney function intact. Now her calcium level is high again and I fear the same thing has happened again. Her psychiatrist had put her back on Lithium. He said they would just do lithium levels every so often. Well, the doc had lithium levels done and other lab work and she found that her calcium was extremely high. I’m so upset that I’ve lost my ability to speak for the moment… I can type what I want to say but I can’t speak at all. My daughter got off the phone with me and told me to calm down that she would be okay… but this is my baby. She may be going on 42 years old, but she is still my baby. Those of you who believe in the power of prayer, please send prayers for Kimberly. God knows who she is. The doc didn’t say anything about the lithium level, so I don’t know if it is caused by it or not. She has stopped the lithium until the docs can get to the bottom of what is causing her to get dizzy. The doc checked her for vertigo when she was at the office (some test with the eyes) but that was okay… she doesn’t have the vertigo disorder. This is caused by something else. I know the doc will get to the bottom of it… I’m just a mom who is worried about her daughter. I would rather be sick myself than have my daughter sick.

Hi Pointless, I will pray for a speedy recovery for your daughter and that they get to the bottom of what is causing her calcium levels to be so high. I know you don't know what is causing it but it does sound like it could be the lithium. With her previous kidney problems, maybe it would take much less to have an adverse effect on her body. I also will pray that you stay strong throughout this ordeal. I'm a mom too, and I know how worried you must be. We never stop worrying about them, do we?

Hi Sid. You know how I feel. I've got to not show how scared I am. I feel like you do. I feel Luke the lithium could have hurt her kidneys again. Although she has been off the lithium almost a week now and she is still getting dizzy and almost faint. I hope we know something by Friday.

I am bipolar and I was originally on Lithium. But knowing the damage it can do on kidneys, as soon as something else came out, my doctor stopped my Lithium. He switched me to Lamictal, which I take the generic form. It works much better for me than Lithium, and has no consequences to the kidneys. Why her doctor has not suggested it I do not know.

The dic ordered to blood tests today. I think they are checking her parathyroid. They did an ionized calcium level and I don't know what else.

I will be Praying my friend, and know God is in control. If it is the Lithium causing the problems and this has happened before it would at least tell them that this is not the medication suited for your daughter, and they should have been keeping better control. But I hope what they find is not something major, as that would be hard for sure. Best wishes on this situation and continue to think positive.

I will be Praying. Let's just hope it is something that medication can fix instead of it being something serious. Just keep strong for her, and know God is in control.

The doc didn't mention that the lithium level was high so that might not be the problem. She didn't ask about it but I must assume that the lithium level was okay for now. Kim went for more blood work today. She had a ionized calcium test done. That is done to rule out or confirm a diagnosis of parathyroid problems usually. I hope it is something simple.

did they check your daughters blood sugar levels, they can cause problems with the eyes. Could she possibly be having silent migraines. I have heard of eye problems with that as well. Will pray that they find out what is wrong with your daughter and that you can speak again.

She doesn't have an eye problem. It's when she is dizzy everything looks and feels like it is moving. She has to have more bloodwork.

I didn't think she had an eye problem. I was thinking maybe she had something else that was causing the problem with her site.

Hi RitterSport, the doc needs more blood work done next week. Don’t know what is going on yet until all the tests are in.

I hope that they find out what the problem with it is as well. As for the Lithium thing, you should figure out if you can take any legal action against the doctor. I was on abilify and I had bad tremors to the point people thought I was having seizures and so they took me off of it. When I went back for medication they tried to put me on abilify again and just said 'oh we will just watch for any symptoms and blah blah'. I refused to go on it. Because if I had a bad reaction the first time, a smaller dosage will probably give the same reaction. If her doctor knew that the Lithium caused some kidney failure or could have been the cause of it, and then gave it to her again that is medical malpractice. I hope she gets better and next time the doctor thinks to even offer the lithium tell her she needs to tell them NO. There are doctors that care about patients more than their wallets so finding one of them might be better.

I don't know if it is the lithium or not. But last time she was on it for years and she finally began to have severe kidney problems. I'm tbinking it is the lithium but the doc didn't mention the lithium level when she called. She just mentioned the calcium and wanted her to have more tests done.

She did stop taking the lithium… her psychiatrist said to stop taking it until they can get to the bottom of what is causing her high calcium levels. She is still getting dizzy even though she has been about a week without the lithium. It seems that her doc would have said.. yes.. it's the lithium... but she didn't.... so maybe the lithium level was okay? I just don't know yet. Maybe we will know more by Friday.. I hope so.

Thanks Winterose. All prayers are welcomed! She is going through a lot right now. I think I remember her saying that she also has an over abundance of Vitamin D in her system too… not sure what is causing that… it still makes me think her kidneys are not functioning again. I’m sure the doc ordered some tests for her kidneys.

I completely understand how you feel. My oldest daughter has a chronic illness and I worry about her so much when I know she is not feeling good. I think that I always need to do anything that I can to solve her problem. I am thankful that the doctors are trying to find what is going on with your daughter. We had specialists tell my daughter that she was nuts and that there was nothing wrong with her. It was strange, but thankfully she has an amazing physician that worked on finding a good solution for her to be completely functional most of the time. I will pray for your family and for your daughter. Keep us posted on what happens.

That’s terrible that your daughter’s doc had said it was in her head, or whatever. You know.. if they can’t find something, they assume that it’s psychological. My daughter’s doc is off tomorrow, and will be back on Friday… so I hope to hear something then.

Hi PointlessQuestions, Like all concerned parents, you are naturally worried. Just remember that things have a way of working out and I'm sure they will in your daughter's case as well. Always expect the best. You are both in my prayers. Blessings.

we will be praying for your daughter. my husband deals with high calcium levels. it never makes him nautious, just a very upset tummy. the doctors haven't figured out why he has this, of yet. it's always hard to wait for test results. keep reading the Good Book and God will answer prayers.

Your hubby is lucky not to get dizzy and nauseous and throwing up. This hits her out of the blue. It happens almost every day at least once.

Thank you Bunny. I'm choking up just reading your post here. You know what it is like for moms of adult children. We don't stop wanting to protect them. I'm so worried about kidney damage again. It took her 9 months to get her kidney function back before.

Hope has always been there for your daughter and no doubt she will make it through. I think there is no excuse that once we pass 20+ we tend to have health issues and i am sure your daughter will get through with this problem. I just learned that one of the senior mylotters just came back telling in his revelation that he's dying. NEVER GIVE UP, if on person can survive on ilness like cancer, am sure she can survive this sickness.

I'm not really worried about her having cancer or anything but I am worried about kidney failure. She had once list so much kidney function that they were just functioning at 40 percent. I know that the doc will have an answer to get her better again.
