Have you negotiated in any way? How do you negotiate?

Negotiation is generally a process to get the best deal that suits your interest. It is believed that negotiation will bring better gain or results compared to accepting others' starting offer. Have you been negotiating? How do you negotiate?
A few years back when Sony Ericsson K618i just came out to the market. I went and buy it from on of the gadget store. The stated price was 290 US dollars. I negotiated with the store owner, my initial offer was 260 dollars, then the owner countered my offer with 280 dollars. I considered a bit and told him that if he is willing to sell it at 275 dollars then I would certainly buy it. He agreed and I saved 15 dollars from the deal.

This is not a common thing to do in the USA and I have no talent at it. However at the farmers markets and craft fairs it's becoming more and more popular, but I leave it to someone else in the family to do it.

Hi Squallming, I think we learnt negotiation way back when we were very young, and in school.
Remember those days when teachers wanted to give us tons of homework?
The class would negotiate for less.
All kind of excuses would come out, such as the English teacher already given tons of homework or there would be a Maths test on Monday etc.
Of course nobody would ask for more homework!
I think that is negotiation at its best.

Price bargaining is an act of a free market where price is set with not only the cost and the desired profit in mind, but also taking in account the supply and demand situation. In a controlled environment like a supermarket or department store, the selling is fixed with no bargaining allowed. But in smaller shops or market stalls where there are more interactions between the customer and the operator, the price is usually open to negotiation.
The skill to bargain is acquired with experience. It needs knowledge, research and tactic to be successful. First you have to know the market price range for the product you have in mind. Then look for a shop\stall that sells within the price range. You then make an offer that is about 10-20% lower than the display price. Be prepared that no discounts may be given as the product is selling at the market price range. But for goodwill and the urge to complete the sell, the seller may be willing to offer you a small discount if he can afford to.
I was a retailer myself. There were times I met some customers who counter-offered a branded product worth $200 with an amount of $100. It is not bargaining. It is an insult! Either the customer thought that the product was a counterfeit or the customer thought that we made 300% gross profit. I would just smile at the customer and said, "sell to me when you find one in other shops, I will pay you a $50 commission". I was being polite. Other retailers may have brushed you off as with no sincerity. If you are really interested to buy, counter-offer a realistic price. Don't just slash the price by half or more. It may be the right thing to do in a tourist market where the price of everything is artificially pushed up but when you buy genuine branded products, the price is not really that free-floating.
Be market savvy, logical, and reasonable and you will be doing okay in your price bargaining.

I usually have this pride that I am really proud of about myself and to myself considering myself as a very good negotiator in this type of business. Great ego i have here.
I am into buy and sell, have been in it for years and I guess I have developed a sixth sense on prices of secondhand items. I like reading and researching about new products and their market prices. I see to it that I know what I am dealing with so I know how to bargain. Most of the times, the price also depends on the season and the demand.
