Can You Offer Tips For a Newbie Runner?

January 10, 2012 9:45pm CST
Hello! I am completely new to running and I would really appreciate any tips anyone can offer me. I have already been fitted for running shoes and I currently work out on the eliptical at the gym a few times a week. What is the best training plan for a beginner runner? I like interval training on the eliptical, but I am not sure where to begin when it comes to running. Thanks for any suggestions!

I would suggest to you to start with rhythm pace, run like 20 minutes three times a week, increase to 30 minuts per day with a slightly faster pace and as times goes, you will get used and your speed and time will increase.

Thank you for your reply! Do you have any suggestions for me if I cannot yet run or jog for 10 minutes straight? Actually, I don't even know if I can run for 5 minutes straight. I can go for 20 minutes at a running pace on the eliptical, but I know that the eliptical is different from a treadmill. Which reminds me, does it make a difference if I start running on a treadmill or if I run outside? Is one way a better way to train over the other? Thanks again.

I have friends who are running professionally and running out in the field is more better than a treadmill. I would suggest you to start with simple walking, then brisk walking then as times goes you will pick up and you start running. It takes time before you start enjoying running and not forgetting the muscle spasms and pain you will have to have to incur.
